Brilliant channel for a novice gardener. I'm not at the cucumber or courgette stage yet.......but I'm successfully growing cabbage, carrots, parsnips and turnips. Thank you. You guys are brilliant.
I always have so much trouble with cucumbers, so thank you for this. Not sure if I have every commented, but I just wanted to add that I appreciate your videos. You have a great on-camera presence and you present the information in a clear, direct manner. *thumbs up*
Hi Cleavage&crops. Thanks for your kind comments on our channel. Unfortunately with a face like mine I have had to work on my screen presence a lot to compensate. I guess we all have to use whatever 'assets' we have to get our message across. Love your channel, great fun and in this boring politically correct world a breath of fresh air. 'Using sex to sell self sufficiency' Ha Ha! I love it! Thumbs up to you too!
Top notch advice as usual, I started growing thanks to finding this channel, had a great first year because of what I learned here, potatoes the size of bricks, foot long carrots and parsnips, some amazing stuff, got a 7 sided greenhouse for next season and I think i'll be trying cucumbers now
Another year & back to quickcrop to make sure i follow your instructions to the letter as last year my cucumbers were brilliant with your superb advice.
Hi Vikram. I am glad you found our video helpful and thank you for taking the time to let us know. I hope you garden went well for you this year, let me know if you need help with anything. Cheers! Andrew
Hey Earthstick. Sorry to hear your cucumbers didn't do so great this year, feed and moisture are the key really. If you are growing them indoors in a tunnel or greenhouse they also like a little shade if is very sunny (I should have mentioned this in the video!), I have a birth tree outside one end of my tunnel that provides dappled shade which they seem to like. Thanks so much for your confidence in our channel, we are delighted! Andrew
Hi Brandi. Yes, all female varieties are much easier to grow for the reasons I cover in the video. The variety in the video is 'Passandra' which is fairly widely available and very reliable. I grow it every year with great success as you see. Thank you for your kind words on our videos, I am glad you enjoy them! Andrew
Wonderful, informative and inspiring video! I've been thinking of gardening this year and will try to follow your instructions. thank you so much for your time.
you could do a video on growing artichokes, i mean the "normal" ones, not the jerusalem artichokes, i know you have one on those. i have green globe and violetto di romagna, they are very different from the jerusalem artichokes. Im not sure where i should plant them, what soil they need, how long they can live and when to harvest them.
Quickcrop how about growing corn? Or peanuts? Or vanilla beans? Or artichokes? Just naming some stuff. Do witch ever you guys like. Really like the Channel, looking forward to more vids.
Quickcrop I'm a young kid that wants to be a botanist I really love your Channel please make more videos I would love to see some type of hybrid plants or something
Very well explained. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 I will try pickeling cucumbers outdoors this year because there is no more room in the polytunnel . I wish I had space for such a big polytunnel like yours.
Interesting video however one question when do you harvest you skipped from growing to munching without mentioning that bit as a novice it would be nice to know just saying
Hi, Good information Thanks ! I've used horse manure hot bed this year and it worked really well in my polytunnel 2x4m also cucumbers did great on my south facing window sill, surprisingly they not got leggy as tomatoes did.
Hey there, thanks for your comment. Yes, I find cucumbers far easier all round than tomatoes. Great to hear of people simply growing on a windowsill as well, you don't always need a greenhouse or polytunnel. The manure hotbed works a treat, I only tried it once and should really do it again next year. Andrew
Quickcrop I have some of my starts under a lamp in my living room. started them on a heating pad I use for my back: ) havnt got into the fancy stuff yet. last year I bought plants. very expensive &half died . very disappointed. added leaves to raised bed this. hoping it works.the base of the raised bed is horse compost
Don't know if you've had the same problem - 2022 bags of compost - doesn't matter if from garden centre, woodies, Lidl, Aldi or anywhere - it all seems the same - water seems to sit on it and not permeate through - so apart from the surface the lower compost gets dry or barely ever gets wet. Are we being sold rubbish this year? Any ideas? Never had this problem with the stuff from the same suppliers in past years in Ireland.
Hi Mohan. Sorry forgot to mention the bees! I felt the video was getting a bit long so we had to edit a little. We must do a video on bees as I have a coule of hives in the garden so plenty about. Thanks for watching Mohan.
Hi there. Thank you for your kind comment. I haven't ever measured brix level of the crops we go but they all taste pretty good so I would hope it reasonably high alright.
hello and thank you for a great update i never have much luck with cucumbers male female i always get mixed up so thank you for naming the seeds also can i buy your seaweed food here in Scotland thanks again Andrew all the best Margaret brown
Hi I'm new to gardening and I'd really appreciate some advice please. I've bought and planted some outdoor cucumber seeds in on of those little blow away greenhouses. I live in Yorkshire should I be ok to plant the cucumbers plants outside now? I was a little concerned by you saying your weather is way too cold as we have almost the same weather. I'm hoping your talking about a different variety. We are only getting about 15° - 17° temperature in the day at the moment and a lot of rain (someone forgot to tell the weather it's Summer). My plants that were doing great are starting to go a bit leggy. I only have room for a couple of them in the blow away greenhouse and I definitely don't have room in my garden for a poly tunnel. Also can I use fish blood and bone and compost in the soil? I'm running out of money having spent a fortune getting started and I have that. I used that powdered egg shells and banana skins and compost in the holes with my tomatoes after a tip I read and touch wood they are so far healthy. Could I do that with cucumbers? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hi! Thank you for the video. I was hoping you can clarify a question for me and also help me with a problem I am having. I understand there are varieties that are only female, but for a regular variety, male is needed to pollinate the female to produce a fruit - why did you say it’s bad, or may cause bitterness? I am having issue with pickle worms - any organic tips that wont harm the bees? Thank you again!
Polytunnels and greenhouses have been used in Ireland for many years, they extend the growing season and make it possible to cultivate vegetables that would prefer a much warmer climate. Tomatoes have been grown under glass in Ireland and the UK since the late 1800s.
Thank you so much for your videos. They have helped me a lot! Question: can you recommend a variety of all female cucumbers? And are their any organic and/or heirloom all female cucumber varieties? Lastly, can you do a video on urban green houses?
Hi Isaac, The Passandra is an excellent female cucumber which we have had great success with. www.quickcrop.co.uk/product/cucumber-passandra-f1 We will have a look into producing a greenhouse video, great idea!
Hi Jonathan. No we don't deliver Seafeed to the States yet but we are working on it. There are very strict regulations governing manure based products so it takes a bit of work to organise this. We look forward to offering a full Quickcrop website for you guys very soon. Thanks for getting in touch. Andrew
@Neil Harp That's misleading Neil, a bag of multipurpose compost will only feed for 4-6 weeks, nowhere near what you need to grow a cucumber plant successfully. Using decent amounts of a slow release organic fertiliser is actually cheaper in the long run as you don't need to use liquid feed later on (as I say in video).
Hi Eli. I guess vegetable growing isn't that cheap, remember it is a hobby as well as a way to produce food. the amount of fertiliser I used is probably 2 or 3 pounds worth. It's not that much work but, as I said, it's a hobby. Not for everyone I guess.
That is what my husband is always saying, but oh do they taste good!! and the great feeling you get when your grow something from a seed, you can't beat it.
Fab video! Thanks. Just one question: did you water the cucumber plants just through the reservoir you buried in the soil, or did you water the bed conventionally as well?
I'm growing cucumbers & tomatoes this year normally I grow chillies which are easiest to grow , I've copied your video , but do you know when you see your plants in summer and think mine have no hope of looking like them🤔
thanks for the response! I should of explained myself better :D if you could please have a look at this image below. Basically the light green bumps, I've never been able to find what it is. I still think its some bug laying eggs or something ha but I doubt it. image.ibb.co/j110Cd/cucumber.png
That is what I was talking about, that variety of cucumber has a bumpy surface, its all healthy. These are different from the smooth and shiny supermarket cucumbers.
i dont understand it, if you remove the male flowers, how do you get pollination? are these "lesbian" cucumbers that the female flowers will pollinate each other? i seriously dont get it. 😲
Quickcrop videos are my absolute favourite on youtube by far.

I really enjoyed this video. So much good information. I had no idea that cucumbers can have only female plants. That’s fascinating.

Sounds brilliant, glad to help, tell us more about the 7-sided greenhouse.
attermire2109 7 sided greenhouse?
7 sides, lantern roof, bi folding door, 3.3M across, lots of room to grow goodies inside!
fantastic channel i learnt so much the accent is a bonus to me reminds me of my grandad
Another year & back to quickcrop to make sure i follow your instructions to the letter as last year my cucumbers were brilliant with your superb advice.
again I learned something. I have never been able to grow cucumbers from transplants. now I know I have been planting them too deep. thank you
We're glad to help. Cheers.
:)
A very helpful and informative video. Thanks very much. I’ll follow your advice soon when putting cucumber plants in my allotment greenhouse.
Very instructive, thank you for sharing your experiences!
I learnt quite a few things from this video. Thank you so much.
Hi Vikram. I am glad you found our video helpful and thank you for taking the time to let us know. I hope you garden went well for you this year, let me know if you need help with anything. Cheers! Andrew
My cumbers did ok this year but not as well as these. Quick Crop is the best uTube growing channel.

Excellent guide for growing end to end - thanks
Thank you very much for the valuable information.
Cheers.
0:34 Boat in the tunnel. Hmm! How's your crop of baby dinghies?! LOL 😂
Nice video and awesome looking cucumbers. Cheers
Coming along nicely as far as I am concerned (2 dinghies) but wife not so happy about it.
We are compiling our current filming schedule. Does anybody have any suggestions for forthcoming videos?
Great video, as always. Perhaps a video about growing grapes in a polytunnel in your upcoming videos? And maybe baby sweet corn?
you could do a video on growing artichokes, i mean the "normal" ones, not the jerusalem artichokes, i know you have one on those. i have green globe and violetto di romagna, they are very different from the jerusalem artichokes. yes, grapes would be good 👍

NIce vidoe just harvested alot of cucumbers myself
That's great, and I'm sure they'll keep on coming!
Very well explained. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 I will try pickeling cucumbers outdoors this year because there is no more room in the polytunnel . I wish I had space for such a big polytunnel like yours.
Thanks, good luck with the gherkins.
Fantastic channel, I'm a big fan :) Keep up the good work! :)
Thanks Jack, glad you enjoy our work.

I learned so much from this video! Thank you!!
That's great. Good luck in the garden this year!
Do you know where I can get those seafeed pellets in Canada? I’ve been looking and can’t seem to find them.
Fab video. Thank you very much for that. Love all your stuff!
Thanks a lot for watching, we are planning more videos over the next few weeks, so stay in touch.
this man hasnt changed since day 1

excellent explanation...thank you for sharing knowledge
japanese turnips please! From Toronto Canada but born in Ulster county. Just love you guys keep up the great work!
Tell us more about Japanese Turnips, never heard of them! (And BTW Ulster is not a county). Cheers.
Hakurei is the plants actual Japanese name. If not those how bout a proper blueberry video.
Thanks, I think blueberry is great idea, it seems a lot of people have trouble with them. We'll see what we can do.
Love the vids. Are you guys going to post any winter crop vids?
We do have winter crop videos on the site, but will try and fill the gaps wherever we find them.
Do you water each plant or just put the water in the reservoir?
Great video. What about bees for pollination.
Hi Mohan. Sorry forgot to mention the bees! I felt the video was getting a bit long so we had to edit a little. We must do a video on bees as I have a coule of hives in the garden so plenty about. Thanks for watching Mohan.
Very informative thank you cheers Ray
Thanks.
great video! do you ever measure the brix levels of your produce? must be quite high !
Hi there. Thank you for your kind comment. I haven't ever measured brix level of the crops we go but they all taste pretty good so I would hope it reasonably high alright.
What if the plant gets too high for our green house and has no where to trail off? Do you cut the top off?
Just wondered have you ever grown cucumbers successfully outdoors, as I don't have a tunnel or glasshouse. But I would like to try growing them.
Are more videos coming?
We are planning some more in the Spring.
Quickcrop cool. can't wait to see
thx quickcrop, really nice videos))
Hi, What variety please?
hello and thank you for a great update i never have much luck with cucumbers male female i always get mixed up so thank you for naming the seeds also can i buy your seaweed food here in Scotland thanks again Andrew all the best Margaret brown
Hi Margaret, thanks for the feeback, we're glad to help. You can buy our Seafeed products from our online shop. www.quickcrop.co.uk/search/seaweed

I use a radiator to heat my seed's as I don't have a heat mat
Does it work OK?
@@fionataylor4014 yes it works sorry for the late reply
Bet these work well there th-cam.com/play/PLq9u6IedE-U.html

I am curious. When did Ireland start growing veg inside? In this episode ,along with others, you say Ireland does have temps for vegetables. thank you
Polytunnels and greenhouses have been used in Ireland for many years, they extend the growing season and make it possible to cultivate vegetables that would prefer a much warmer climate. Tomatoes have been grown under glass in Ireland and the UK since the late 1800s.
Quickcrop Wow! I have a neighbor that lived there late 60s early 70s. She was telling me about some of the history of there. very intriguing

How those flowers were pollinated in the tunnel? I like to build a tunnel, any tunnel design suggestions that bees and insects can still come in?
Insects will still pollinate in a tunnel, the doors are generally left open to assist them.
Another question. I have hard time finding bulk sraw. Would brown grass clippings do the same job as the straw with evaporation? thanks
Grass clippings will tend to rot down, producing a damp mush. This would cause the developing cucumbers to rot.
Quickcrop thanks for that info
hi and what about to grow sweet pumpkin:)
Hi Uzair, thanks for getting in touch. Yes, we must to a pumpkin video but as the season has passed we will have to leave it till next year!
Hi, what is the particular variety of cucumber in this video?
Hi, we usually grow Passandra Cucumber
www.quickcrop.co.uk/product/cucumber-passandra-f1
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻so much better
Glad to hear it.
Thank you very much and please more video my friend.
And I have questions please what I seeds in this month.
and am sorry my language not perfect.
Ali
We have a range of seeds available here: www.quickcrop.co.uk/vegetable-seeds
thank you
Quickcrop Which month is best to sow chillies January or February
It depends where you are.
Am from iraq
hi guys, any overwintering veg yous recommend I already have overwintering onions, garlic , and Xmas spuds
You can try planting broad beans now, they will be ready about a month earlier than the spring sown beans and won't be bothered by black fly.
Sounds good any variety In particular
Aquadulce Claudia are a great winter sown variety. Good luck

It seems that it cost a lot to grow your own veggies. I mean all the expensive fertilizers.. and so much work as well
@Neil Harp That's misleading Neil, a bag of multipurpose compost will only feed for 4-6 weeks, nowhere near what you need to grow a cucumber plant successfully. Fab video! Thanks. Just one question: did you water the cucumber plants just through the reservoir you buried in the soil, or did you water the bed conventionally as well?
Hi Elie, water the plant through the reservoir, but also water lightly at the soil surface, adding feed if neccessary.
I'm growing cucumbers & tomatoes this year normally I grow chillies which are easiest to grow , I've copied your video , but do you know when you see your plants in summer and think mine have no hope of looking like them🤔
Believe me, they will grow. There are always good years and bad years but they will produce something.
what are those white lines and white bumps that looks like maybe eggs of something? I always get them on my cucumbers...
The spines are quite normal, there is a theory that the plant developed them to protect the fruit from predators.
thanks for the response! I should of explained myself better :D if you could please have a look at this image below. Basically the light green bumps, I've never been able to find what it is. I still think its some bug laying eggs or something ha but I doubt it. image.ibb.co/j110Cd/cucumber.png

Yes, indeed, your young cucumber.
What happened to Klaus?
He's busy growing vegetables and teaching other gardeners.
i dont understand it, if you remove the male flowers, how do you get pollination? are these "lesbian" cucumbers that the female flowers will pollinate each other? i seriously dont get it. 😲
I know, it can be a bit confusing. Try this link homeguides.sfgate.com/selfpollinating-cucumbers-43527.html
sell sell sell your crap, all the soil and fertilizer can be made for free if you are not lazy
