I really appreciated how you brought light to Meg White’s drumming. Maybe another female drummer? Karen carpenter, Sheila E, Danielle Haim? Women’s history month is in March after all :p
I feel like Hook is always credited as the face of Joy Division and New Order just because he's got the attitude. Definitely not going to try take anything away from him- I'm a fan. Morris always struck me as being the backbone of both groups, though. His drumming really reflects Curtis in a lot of ways. Thanks for the vid.
Morris was definetely the only trained musician if I recall. The rest of the blokes just learned as they played. What all of them had (and that shaped their sound in both bands) was creativity and trying new things all the time.
The peel session version of "Love will tear us apart" is the best version and in my opinion the crowning glory of Morris's drum playing skill and creativity..
Good analysis. Stephen's influences included Krautrock bands such as Can and Neu, which account for his penchant for repetitive, hypnotic hooks and willingness to experiment with electric pads. He's a very machine-like drummer: precise, unwavering, and consistent. In fact, during the recording of Unknown Pleasures, producer Martin Hannett would have Stephen record the drum parts to the songs one drum at a time to eliminate bleedthrough, emphasizing the robotic quality of Stephen's style.
This is one of your best single drummer focused videos. Adding the bass was a great touch. I found myself rewinding to listen for what you talked about but also because you were so on it with the bass and your drumming.
Great break down and skills dude! Other than killing it with these beats, I dig the straight forward kit and sound and it was like hanging out with a buddy and talking tunes.
Did really well with this video. Morris is a genius. The whole thing about Joy Division is that they were like all great art: Often at the edge of chaos and yet not falling in to it. Certainly the most influential band the UK ever produced. New Order started getting really slick and while that has its charm you felt it was merely going for money rather than art.
At 52 years old I am very happy to see young people listening and playing R&R on acoustic instruments and not just programmed music on a computer. 🤘🎸🥁🍻😂😂😂
Fantastic Cobb ' greeeat video ' fantastic breakdowns ' ...I'm from Macclesfield in England where Stephen hails from and is somewhat a local hero, Ian Curtis also grew up here and sadly passed too. Onwards with the great videos and keep up the great music.
Nice video. The thing about Stephen was that as far as technique is concerned he was/is the best musician in Joy Division/New Order. The sheer energy and invention of his playing left a lot of room for for those sparse bass lines and, on Closer, a lot of experimental guitar and synth sounds. My favourite track on that record is Atrocity Exhibition - a song which is held totally together by that driving all kit, drum pattern that sounds like the approach of the apocalypse wearing jackboots - a fairly simple but effective bass line, haunting vocal delivery from Ian and just wild guitar and synth noises that sound like Robert Fripp in a blender!! Amazing. I think a lot of that electronic drum stuff from New Order has its foundation in Can (another amazing drummer in Jaki Liebezeit) and Kraftwerk and went on to influence the later hip-hop scene with artists and producers like Dilla. IMO everyone here re-wrote the book in new and very interesting ways - we need more of that today please.
That’s awesome! I just finished the first book and a few chapters into the second one. Really great read and interesting backstory behind all that music he was apart of.
Wow... you definitely earned a Like with this one. I feel that Stephen Morris iZ one of the most underrated drummerZ in history. I even have the 1989 Modern Drummer with hiZ interview feature 👍🥁🥁
Stephen is a brilliant drummer and innovator on early electronics. I highly recommend his two books for both really interesting and at the same time fun reading since he is a man with lot´s of humour and insight!
Nice, Cobb! I would absolutely LOVE an episode on Jeremiah Green, the drummer from Modest Mouse. His beats are so good on their early stuff like "This is a Long Drive for Someone with nothing to think about", "The Lonesome Crowded West", and "The Fruit That Ate Itself" Lots of rolling style drum beats (Trucker's Atlas), but many amazing grooves (Exit Does Not Exist, Ohio, Beach Side Property, Head South). Him and Eric Judy (the bassist) were and incredible rhythm section.
I just wanted to say I am just now listening to your music you just put out and I have to say it’s just great. I really enjoy your style and the orchestration is so tasteful. Keep up the great music and great videos 😊
Great video! Some ideas for future vids on drummers: Dave Lombardo Tame Impala (Kevin Parker) Alex Carapetis Jon Theodore Any type of commentary on the 2 simultaneous performing drummers in King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard would be fun. Anyone else out there like these ideas? Or can u build on this list?
In "24 Hour Party People" they show how "She's Lost Control" was produced and according to that movie, Stephen went up to the roof of the studio to play the drum intro
Thanks Cobb. Appreciate you letting us know about specific drummers that influenced music. Well done, dude. Again, always learn something from your vids. Thanks again.
I'd be really interested to know your views on the legendary Jaki Liebezeit of the band Can, especially their early stuff from Soundtracks, Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi and Future Days. Thanks. Regards from the UK. 🙂🇬🇧
You say at first the name of the song and than you explain how Stephen Morris drum on it. And then we see you playing on the drum. You are a good teacher and a good drummer. And you have selfconfidence.
Just saw this one! Morris is so good. My band is set to tackle Leaders of Men soon. Are you left-handed playing a right handed kit or you just play open?
It’s both actually! The Unknown Pleasures version is the synth drum and the single version on Substance is the Aerosol Spray. I actually read both of Stephens books recently and that’s something he talked about. Thanks for watching the video!

Stephen Morris is and absolute machine
His drumming on New Order's 'Age of Consent' is ridiculous
I heard it was some left overs from love will tear us apart that they looped in there
One of his greatest riffs is in Dead Souls. Mind-boggling genius.

Most talented musician in the group definitely

When the Disorder beat started I got chills. Great job man!

Always stuck me as a same energy, tighter Moon influenced driver. Massive fan of both.
Thank you so much !

Great stuff
Great video man this is what I was looking for.
24 hours and colony, totally unique drumming
Don't forget Dead Souls. Where he got those riffs from is beyond anyone.

special shout-out for Stephen’s tom fills on Atmosphere, a personal fav of mine growing up :)
Jaki Liebezeit and Stephen Morris are two of the giants of the creative drum playing, they are incredibly underrated and influential...
Post punk drummers were hugely influenced by Jaki
Great video, thanks! I read Stephen’s book and it was awesome.
That’s awesome! I just finished the first book and a few chapters into the second one. Really great read and interesting backstory behind all that music he was apart of.
Probably your best video, including your justifiably popular time signiture one.
I wasn't too enthusiastic about you videos at first but I'm a big fan of your work now. Well done keep it up
stephen is a human drum machine

You know what? You know what you’re talking about. Kudos.
love this video! i really like the bass parts added to show how the drums work with the song, awesome stuff!
Thank you! I don’t normally play bass, so it was a little bit of a challenge for me to record those parts but I definitely think it added a lot.
@@cobb_thedrummer the extra effort shows, really drags me into the songs and i start thinking about how the drums factor in with the rest of the music
My favourite drum song de Stephen Morris is Isolation Lp verson.
Glad you did this. Morris is great and was the backbone of the JD and NO sound
One of my favorite drummers I drum disorder everyday. hard video cobb
Just lovely. If you've done Hugo Burnham from Gang of Four, I'll find it. If you haven't then you'd better ;)
I just wanted to say I am just now listening to your music you just put out and I have to say it’s just great. I really enjoy your style and the orchestration is so tasteful. Keep up the great music and great videos 😊
Excelent choice. They dont talk often about Stephen.
Cool subject first times hearing of this band and drummer really enjoyed it
Cheers mate, I love your vids, it,s like you break it down in an understandable way, I am 71 but still like to practice . All the best jvb
Fantastic, I was really hoping you'd play 'Atrocity Exhibition' though whose beat makes me chuckle every time I hear it!!
Great video! Some ideas for future vids on drummers:
Dave Lombardo
Tame Impala (Kevin Parker)
Alex Carapetis
Jon Theodore
Any type of commentary on the 2 simultaneous performing drummers in King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard would be fun.
Anyone else out there like these ideas? Or can u build on this list?
Thank you for this, it made my morning! Some of my favourite songs and I don’t even play the drums
Great video
Greetings from Cornwall 🏴☠️
thank you for putting this together
Great stuff.drummers don't get the recognition they deserve.
In "24 Hour Party People" they show how "She's Lost Control" was produced and according to that movie, Stephen went up to the roof of the studio to play the drum intro
That sounds awesome! I still haven’t seen that one.
Actually a true story.
@benjaminprietop: That never happened, of course, but it summed up working with Martin Hanneth pretty well, according to Stephen. :) Great movie, btw.
Thanks Cobb. Appreciate you letting us know about specific drummers that influenced music. Well done, dude. Again, always learn something from your vids. Thanks again.
ever listen to that one live version of interzone at the factory? Stephen is a fucking monster
Well done.
the live version of love will tear us apart is insane
|Fantastic band and fantastically influential to my own interest in learning Bass guitar.. Peter Hook was my hero!..
very nice. always good to see some Joy Division love! 👍
Sabbath and JD. Thanks for both.
Thank you! Awesome drumming!
Watch the warm up at the hacienda in 1987! Your head will literally spin
Très bel hommage
Great video!
Thx for sharing this with us! Very informative and awesome grooves
I was just learning this on bass way cool.
Saludos desde Mexico! Gran contenido
favorite song is Dead Souls! hope i can sound like Stephen Morris real soon 🥁
Legit💪

Sweet! A video on new wave/post punk beats, in general, would be awesome.
You got to do Boris Williams from the cure
Brilliant Cobb. Love it. Fond memories. I may even have to mangle a song myself - apologies to music lovers everywhere!
Great video and I love your hat.
You say at first the name of the song and than you explain how Stephen Morris drum on it. And then we see you playing on the drum. You are a good teacher and a good drummer. And you have selfconfidence.
Sensacional meu irmão !!! 💚💛❤
didn't know Bladee was a drummer that's so cool
Love the hat, you are cool.
Love your vids, very educational and fun. I would love it if you did a video like this on Jimmy Chamberlain (my fav drummer by far)
Good drumming mate 🔥! I wish you all the best with this video. I give you my Like and my support. Greetings 🤙
Cobb, can you do a video on maureen tucker
Just saw this one! Morris is so good. My band is set to tackle Leaders of Men soon. Are you left-handed playing a right handed kit or you just play open?
The 'She's lost control' sound I think is a Synare 3 synth drum.
It’s both actually! The Unknown Pleasures version is the synth drum and the single version on Substance is the Aerosol Spray. I actually read both of Stephens books recently and that’s something he talked about. Thanks for watching the video!
@@cobb_thedrummer Im watching your Kieth Moon vid right now..I subscribed. take care.
surprised you didn't analyze Atrocity Exhibition
I'd love to see a video on Nofx drummer Smelly (Eric Sanden)
Could you potentially analyze Zach Hill, Brian Chippendale, or Damon Che?
Do Mike Joyce of the smiths
I like your hat !! You look like a michael Jackson Wizard !!!

Atrocity exhibition
Human metronome
Stephen was a computer
Too bad nothing was recorded to stereo in the studio, all comped if I remember.
