    Joy Division! This video accurately demonstrates how the bass is literally amd figuratively the biggest part of this band's sound. Don't hate: the guitar, drums and haunting vocals are stellar as well.

      Me too, didn't realize how bass-driven their sound really is until this video.

      @blackrollins 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Totally agree. There’s definitely a melody in Peter Hook’s bass playing that is the driving force in their songs. Almost all the tracks for Joy Division open with the bass

    • @littlekingtrashmouth9219
      @littlekingtrashmouth9219 3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Ian Curtis said he liked the chorus effect Peter Hook put on the bass because he could distinguish it. That’s a strength to Joy Division’s sound-each instrument had its separate place and pulled its own weight. Nothing bled in together. Everything was sparse and unique.

    • @seanmcglynn3638

    • @dmcc5110
      @dmcc5110 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      I always thought that Bernard got worse at guitar over time, you can tell he had to concentrate a lot while he was playing, but even his playing from early new order gigs was pretty good and then later on you could tell he didn't practice as much or something like that

    There's a lot of "drone" tones in JDiv which I love as well as how one instrument will keep repeating a short phrase while another instrument will voice a sympathetic melody. Combining two simple phrases to create a serpent like looping effect is what helps to make their music so hypnotizing. Let alone Ian's dance moves. He did the robot dance before it was even a thing.

    New Dawn Fades is my all time favorite Joy Division riff! So dark and brooding. Hook’s bass line is killer too

    It was Hooky's line that made me want to become a bass player when I was 14. 32 years I am still playing, now covering Reggae, Dub too. And I am starting to learn funk. If I have never heard, I would have never started to play bass. Grateful. Amazing video.

    • @steveFL450

      I read someplace that Interpol is based off the last 1:30 of "New Dawn Fades" by JD.

      @@steveFL450 Which interpol song?

    • @steveFL450
      @steveFL450 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michaelcolt4196 the entire band. The whole band is based off the last minute and a half of “NDF”. Forget where I read it, but it’s fairly accurate.

    • @michaelcolt4196
      @michaelcolt4196 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steveFL450 Well yes, it does have some resemblance to songs like Stella was a diver or Obstacle 1, specially in the way they´re played but Interpol evolved into their own, of course the Joy Division influence is there

    • @steveFL450
      @steveFL450 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelcolt4196 yeah, you’re right. Don’t overthink it. It’s just a throwaway line from an article I read somewhere. I think of it like this: if you put that bit of “NDF” in a Petri dish in the NYC indie scene with all of its influences and let it develop you’d get Interpol and it’d go from there.
