    Good review bro! You really hit on a lot of great points. I'm on the fence about getting the PMC 6-2s. I also have an RME interface setup, currently all AES outputs are occupied. That's really interesting that you're noticing that much of a difference between XLR to AES but the way you explain it makes sense. I have a smaller room but it is treated heavily. I'm trying to get away from DSP-heavy speakers (currently using a Genelec's with 2 Subs). I feel like I can solve the AES issue. My main concern now is if I would be too close to the monitors (given my room dimensions) and if I would be able to trouble-shoot/ calibrate some of the known room issues that I currently have with the PMC sound align software. Anyways, this is the best review I've heard yet on the 6-2's. Stoked for you, they look like they sound great in your room!

      Thank you man! The issues I ran into with the ADI totally caught me off guard! The DAC filters in the RME and the filter in the PMCs together didn’t get along well for sure but you’ll definitely wanna keep a good 4.5 feet away from the 6-2s for sure! Sounds like you have a really awesome set up over there bro, definitely let me know if you end up with the PMCs and thanks for tuning in 🙏

    Agree with your feedback. Definitely require some break-in and AES is necessary. They also run at 96k so if you use that sample rate in your DAW, you'll get the best response. I'm on board with your feedback about SoundAlign, but I think if you use it purely for the shelving filters, it can work pretty well. On mine I do a light bass boost from 151hz (2-3dB) and a slight treble cut at 5500k (2-3dB) just to warm up the sound slightly. BTW, SoundAlign is minimum phase, not linear phase. If it was linear phase it would add latency which does not happen :) Another tip in terms of room treatment - I use PSI AVAA's in my room to deal with room modes and it helps a ton to handle all the bass that these speakers put out. Anyway thanks for the video and glad to see more 6-2's out there!

    The amplification is not digital, it's analog (class D) - digital amplification doesn't exist.
    For some reason they must be converting the analog inputs into digital (I guess for DSP on the speaker) then back again and this two step process must be degrading the signal?
    The AES inputs don't go through two steps of conversion, just the one, resulting in a better sound I suppose?
    I haven't heard this feedback from anyone else however, you sure there wasn't anything wrong with your analog signal path?

      @@CollectiveIntelligenceMusic yes, it’s solid state amplification with an D/A converter strapped to it feeding the amp directly. I just coined it “digital amp” because of how it’s setup but it hasn’t gone over too well lol. That said, my analog signal chain is pristine, sounds great. The AES bypass just sounded that much better. I wouldn’t think the round trip would be so obvious but it was. Not just for me either. This couldn't be coming out at a better time. Was actually on the fence of ATC vs PMC's and this helped give me the final sway in the PMC direction - largely because of the lack of need for sub integration and the more honest audio presentation for mixing. Have a pair of PMC 6's coming my way! In regards to the AES vs Analog Input, what DAC were you using when you were feeding the PMC's analog signal? I have a Prism Lyra 2 I adore for feeding my Genelecs right now, and would be sad to lose the sound of its DA conversion if I went digital. Were you feeding it a Prism Lyra as well when you were hearing the sonic negatives you mention in the video, or something with a worse DA?

As for the DAC I used analog that didn’t work as well, I used both the Lyra, and the RME ADI 2/4 via analog in. Both DACs historically sounded really good with analog speakers. With the PMCs, I definitely favor the AES in sound much more, I don’t believe it has much to do with the DAC and more to do with the second round trip inside the monitors. That said, the Lyra 2 has an AES out option but it requires an RCA to AES cable adaptor. I got mine from Mogami and I think this would a perfect option for you hope this helps 🙏

    I could not find anywhere that those monitors have A/D converters. Those Class D amplifiers do not convert your audio from A/D. They simply provide power to your monitors. I spoke to PMC as well as Sweetwater. I think what you heard by going AES was either a combination of bit rate and a jump from 48k to 96k, possibly. I also had a question about the way you have those monitors set up, PMC recommends the grill facing inward, you have them facing outward, do you find a benefit to doing so? thanks for everything you do for the audio community bro!! loving the channel and content. much love.

Came back home and was about to drop 7K on an ATC sub but thought I should explore options because I hated having a separate sub with the ATC and I find have a stereo sub pair necessary as well to not run into major room issues (so 14k on subs). I had the chance to demo a lot of monitors in my room and had an eye opening experience. I think great work can be done on ATCs. I had a very deep connection with ATC monitors and had to take a step back to understand if I was enjoying the way they sounded more than they were helping me do my job. For what it's worth, I have the Dutch & Dutch 8cs. I run them analog because of a specialized monitor controller I use. I just couldn't live without it. I tried the AES and I did hear a slight difference, but I wouldn't say one was worse or better. I tried the PMC 6-2s as a demo and only ran them analog. Maybe that's actually why I skipped them! The D&D's sound pristine via analog in or digital in. But they're of course a different kind of monitor entirely too.

  • @gtk_NO
    @gtk_NO 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Before you went AES, May i ask if you were running the 6-2 directly from the Interface sans any decent monitor controlller in the analog audio path? Even with hifi setups with Dacs feeding directly into poweramps even RME adi 2 and such I usually find this robs the sound of punch etc and sounds kindof flat in my opinion. Although even some audiophile people love this direct kind of setup I remain sceptical of it. Im currently feeding PMC Result 6 from a RME UFX via a Drawmer MC 2.1 and I find it sounds great in a fully treated room. Result 6 dont have any DSP built in but still class D amps. I have an honestly hard time believing internal PMC dacs would be better then RME or other even more highend DACs. Although Im not too afraid of AD/DA roundtrips as its been proven many times even 20s of roundtrips cant be detected in blind A/B tests in many cases.
    Anyway try this with normal hifi setups as well, feed a poweramp directly from any dac. A quality preamp in the analog realm is important or it robs something from the signal in my opinion. This could have something to do with impendance matching and such. Just dont insert any old mackie bigknob, presonus central station or any fully passive unit. Get a quality active monitorcontroller. Im on a budget and the Drawmer is the one I can currently afford and the "treshold unit" I wouldnt go any lower price/quality than personally. Just every timed i tried feeding analog from various dacs directly into poweramps its always been better for me when ive tried with a preamp in the chain as well. Direct from dac/interface to monitor is more "neutral" but has lacked some excitement.
    This is something that im actually worried about if I should choose later to try to replace my Drawmer unit with a Trinnov Nova and also using the Nova as the monitorcontroller. If it will become more flat without that active monitoring controller in the chain or if the Trinnov will hold its own in that regard.
    All of that being said, in your situation and in everything audio I think its best to keep an open mind. I would obviously try to feed the 6-2s with AES as well. But also in feeding anything analog to be mindful of the dac/preamp/monitorcontroller being used to feed a studio monitor or poweramp feeding a set of speakers.

      @@gtk_NO Lynx Hilo, Prism Lyra and RME ADI 2/4 (at my own studio) were used to test the analog signal path and I’ve used a drawmer for over a year with ATC 45s and Focals. It wasn’t much different for me, just slight distortion/sweetness or airy saturation from the drawmer - but fairly transparent from my recollection.
      I appreciate the suggestion though! You’d have to hear the new PMC monitors to see the difference from analog to AES yourself. Roundtrips usually aren’t this noticeable, but also always noticeable to me. The trinnov is a great monitor controller and fantastic room correction unit for sure from what I’ve heard. The DAC is better inside the grace designs m905 and I’m not certain how the trinnov DAC sounds against your RME interfaces. The only great RME dac I’ve ever used was in the ADIs personally after having the UCX, baby face, and 802 on hand. Nevertheless, the result 6’s are great. Enjoy them and thanks for tuning in! 🙏
