Tlm 103 or 414 for Ice Cube type rap vocals?
@@queball2263 hmm, I wouldn’t say you can get replicate his chain with either, his vocals sound very full typically and when they were recording in majors - his stuff was done on what sounds like maybe a u47 style mic, but that’s not to say a 103 wouldn’t sound really good for rapping in general! Pairing it with a good and potentially dark preamp but be a good move, especially on more aggressive style
@ thank you
Change your fucking TH-cam channel name. you’re not a savior. You are a pathetic egomaniac
In this case I will definitely skip Mogami brand, (save hundreds of dollars) and go for any AES cable with a good quality plugs; the audio quality will be exactly the same; like 100% to 100% same. :)
Whether quality should be the same or not, reliability is also a consideration! Will the cables last the test of time or break easily! Will they be immune to RF and other interference? Thats why I always go with the good stuff when can but anything works to start! 🙏

Never knew the C414 would be considered a “budget” mic. I paid $1,000 for my XLS. That’s the mic Freddy Mercury used on his vocals
@@PharaohLawLess1 Freddy Mercury used a 414 EB, not a modern 414 XLS which came out in 2009. Try look up the price for a vintage 414 EB, certainly makes the one I’m talking about look pretty “budget”!
@ I’ve seen some on Reverb for around $1,000 of course used. But when I think budget I think of the price range around $300. I have a Rode NT1000 I bought for $350 and it’s a good mic. But I guess it all what some consider budget…like what I consider very pricey might be budget to you bcuz your pockets are clearly deeper than mines 🤷🏽♂️
@ there’s only two Original 414 EBs on reverb for a few grand starting price, you aren’t seeing the right model when you search it, there are 8 different models of the C414 microphone and the NT1A is a great mic as well, really good investment and pairs well with Focusrite character, anything can work man and I definitely have nothing against cheaper or more expensive options, budget to me is renting a C414 for 90 bucks a month a few before moving to a new one when I’m charging 25 bucks an hour for recording at the time. All contextual but yes, generally, it’s cheaper than a lot of mics are and the interface is also the cheapest variation of the Apogee units. Hope this clears that up. Best of luck!
@ Yeah, I paired the NT1000 with the Focusrite Penta when I first started recording and producing. The Penta was very underrated
Hi. Thx for sharing. What do you think of the SSL2+ interface. What do you think about them vs. Apogee. No one is able to give this an answer about the Heritage audio i73 interface. Is the AD to DA better than the SSL, or is it closer to RME . Even L&M couldn't. I know you're from Toronto, so am I. Etobicoke.
@@garyshirinian the 2+ is great if you don’t use outboard gear! You can’t bypass the pramps in it and I’m generally not too familiar with the Heritage audio stuff, especially interface wise but I’d like to clarify that each company has a variety of interfaces and converter quality so it’s really hard to compare anything to RME as a company overall because RME baby face has very bad quality when compared to the ADI but is very good when compared to another interface in its price range! Hope this helps and let me know what your budget is and I’ll be able to help a bit better 🙏
@RAYNETHESAVIOUR thx for replying. I have Neve 511 preamp and JDK V12 compressor. I'm thinking of buying the Golden Age premier mic preamp to add in my box. Maybe I'll get an Audient ID4 interface. Reson going with GA, they have 73 vibe to it, and it's affordable. Thx again. Unless you have other suggestions.
I dont think the 414 is a Budget mic Honestly 😂 still a good mic! But imo the best Budget mic is the austrian Audio oc16 which is really gives a run for only 300 Bucks
@@sanjulianx definitely gotta get my hands on this Austrian audio mic line up! Really curious about them, I haven’t tried any of them and would like to!
The first combo I had where I felt the mojo and clarity was above an acceptable level was: Focusrite interface> Golden Age 73 pre jr, and AKG C214 mic. I later used AKG mics exclusively for a while and the 1073 sound became a staple for me after that. I also learned that the clarity of the AKG’s is what I appreciated, but not the brightness (excluding the XLS), so my mic choice evolved towards a more vintage sound.
@@CliffMoir that’s a really creative combination, well done man, that’s what I’m all about! Love that unique solution you put together and I can pretty well hear the sound of it in my head - very interesting 🙏
Thank you so much for making such an informative video that breaks down this information for me. As a young, up-and-coming artist, it really helps me out!🙏
@@spencerdadd9924 🙏🙏🙏
Aha! You mentioned this combination to me before when I mentioned I had just picked up a duet 3 for travel recording. Oddly enough I haven’t had great results with the 214,414’s from AKG for my voice specifically, and I’m actually a rapper with a deeper tone. Do you have any links to the records you’ve recorded with this vocal chain? I would love to hear em.
I definitely will link you to some stuff recorded with the chain! It was some of the first stuff I ever worked on about 10 years but there’s one album I think that was both rap and deeper tone but was definitely not my best work, yet still a solid recording! I’ll link it to you 👌
You have a great way of expressing complex audio concepts that are often hard to put into words. A bit off-topic from me: could you please make a video explaining why you chose the Audeze MM-500 over the Audeze LCD-X? I’m not sure if you’ve tried the LCD-X, but I saw your video about the MM-500, so I assume you might have tested them. There are quite a few people, not just audiophiles but professional mixing engineers, who prefer the LCD-X and consider them superior for mixing.
To be honest, I know a lot pros who just don’t want to support Manny for all kinds of reasons which I would never do. Like Manny, there were things I felt the LCD X’s could be improved upon slightly such as detail and clarity, but only marginally! The LCD X’s are a bit heavier in the low end but I use a dsp eq in my ADI to add to more low end to my MM500s and it’s really remarkable sounding! That said, when they are both that good, it really comes down to taste! Hope this helps 🙏 and thank you for the kind words! I’m glad my rambling is carrying across correctly !!
I did grab a Austrian Audio OC818 couple month ago, it's base around the 414 and it ripps on vocal! (And on drums, acoustic guitar and guitar cab too) A go to for a lot of stuff can't go wrong with this type of mic. Btw your Channel is great man keep it up! 🔥
I have the cardioid only version, the OC18, and it’s fantastic for vocals or acoustic guitar. Haven’t tried it yet on drums or a guitar cab
@@insanron thank you very much 🙏 I’m really excited to try the Austrian audio mic line! I’m gonna email them tomorrow 💯
I am going to catch you 😆 Lets grow together. Wishing you the best.
Definitely bro, I’m just trying to help people out and have some fun along the way, praying for your success
@ same here 32 years mixing have to pass it along
so i have an outboard chain (preamp, comp, eq, etc) and an arturia audiofuse interface. How/why would i integrate this into my setup. I’m unclear of physically where in my current chain this would be inserted
It wouldn’t be inserted to a chain like a piece of outboard, I’ll make a video on how to connect a converter to an interface with ADAT or aggregate device!
First, it’s important to understand the difference between an interface and a converter. Your AudioFuse is an interface with preamps and converters, while the RME ADI-2/4 is a high-quality standalone converter. To maximize quality, use the AudioFuse to handle inputs and outputs, but route the signal through the ADI-2/4 for better AD/DA conversion. For your outboard chain, send audio out from the interface to your gear (preamp → comp → EQ) and back into the interface, ensuring proper gain staging. This way, you get the best of both worlds-flexibility from your interface and superior conversion from the RME.
my opinion is, that I have tried tons of compressors for my vocal chain, and nothing could beat the cl1b. yes its mono, but vocals are as well (as long as you don't want them to be). I was lucky enough to get me one before pries went crazy....I never want to miss it again
It’s true, it’s really really good at transparent tube compression for vocals! If you got the cash for it and it’s a good investment - it’s a great compressor for sure and though I say to not buy one, I certainly wouldn’t recommend anyone sell it without thinking on it because it’s a really great investment and will continue to appreciate over time!
Just got my PmCs connected AES! Sounds amazing but sometimes my studio image leans to the left. What would you in this situation?
@@JaymeSilverstein I haven’t encountered that problem myself personally, but it sounds like you gotta go into Sound Align and make sure they have the same output level (dbu) and that they are setup properly for AES left and AES right under the Mode section. If you aren’t using aes cables, XLR’s could introduce issues to the signal but usually it just works fully or not at all. Check all this out and get back to me!
I am using aes cables. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. I went back to analogue because at least the center is rock solid.
You should absolutely check out the ZenPro Audio mods Warren’s team does on the HS monitors. They swap all the cheap stuff out, remove the limiter it has.. (your mind is blown when you hear these things without the stupid limiter they have.). Totally different monitor after the mod. $1000 bucks a pair, and i guarantee they outshine monitors WAY out of their price point.
@@jeremy_woods this is gold info, thanks for dropping this here man I 100% will be getting the mod done, just checked it out online! Thank you! 🙏
Good Stuff... There needs to be more videos like this. Some people can afford to go to school to get educated or don't really have the passion for a deep understanding on what can work and what just gonna be sitting around. I think if people can't afford schooling then buying audio engineering books would be the better option instead of buy any studio gear. Your videos are spot on with the topics.

Cheers Rayne. Good to know about the DAC being more important. I've just ordered a RME UXC ii so I'm keen to hear how my current headphones sound using that instead of through my DJ mixer audio Interface. I commented before on your PMC-62 video about using the DJM900 Nexus Mixer AES to run PMC6s.. after getting some advice from another producer I've decided to stay with my Mackie Hr828s for now and instead upgrade my DJM900 to RMEUCX and importantly to fix up my room (Speaker stands, clear out the clutter, add more acoustic treatment and experiment with speaker placement) before going to PMC6s I think I was doing things in the wrong order by getting PMCs before Interface and room optimisation. + This way when/if I even need to upgrade to the PMC6s then I know they're running through the best AES interface and in a room that is fixed up as best it can.
@@AlexProspect definitely a wise move! Fixing all problems you can control now will benefit your speakers a lot later when you buy them! Hope you enjoy the UFX, it’s a rock solid interface and the headphone amps are actually quite musical, I enjoyed using them when I did! 🙏
The thd in mdr 7506 is fuckin horrible below 200 Hz. That is, the bass is WILDLY inaccurate and sounds "saturated" off jump. Yes you can get good mixes anyway, i do, but man, it can be difficult. For the most part you're completely right but not with every pair.
@@django3108 Andrew Schepps has a great video where he talks about his time mixing in just the 7506’s, I find them to work with some correction and a great DAC/Amp but I definitely prefer Technica’s and Audeze for mixing personally!
Hi Rayne, I wrote to you on instagram... thanks for this video
@@davecirelli953 my pleasure Dave, I’ll have a look out for you on Instagram!
brother, big fan of the channel. If you're impressed with the DAC quality of RME ADI-2, you gotta test out a unit of Neumann MT48, tho they're harder to manage in terms of AES connectivity, the DAC output, both speakers & monitors beat the ADI-2 by a mile, I'd say about 15-20%, might make up for the difference you mentioned between analog & AES. This was tested in shootouts in multiple studios (countries even, if you wanna count that), speaker systems, headphones, etc, and it was a universal agreement that the Neumann is better, not even close. Looking at the price & even DAC chip specs, it seems to make no sense, but with converter tech being newer in the Neumann and their implementation, along with even better headphone amps (and I guess higher headroom speaker output stage), it's really surprising! Best purchase I've ever made. Tho I gotta say, I've tested converters with fuller and more impressive low end (tho it's more detailed on the MT48), it still has way more low end than the ADI. Would love to see your thoughts!
@@steppbrooEFT thank you for the kind words! As for the Neumann MT, the converter in there is merging technologies which I am indeed familiar with! I personally do find merging to have great quality stuff and I think the quality of their gear competes with the best out! That said, there are some compromises with the Neumann Model they released when compared to their Anubis model for example. The RME ADI is more comparable to the Lynx Hilo in terms of conversion as it’s really a dedicated converter and not an interface so I’m not quick to compare the Neumann MT interface to the ADI for that reason. I personally find the RME ADI’s converter to rival that of Lynx and other dedicated converter way above its price, but the Neumann MT is still a fantastic device and once you can learn its workflow and the software, it’s doesn’t disappoint! Can’t go wrong with any of the above, especially if you’re really enjoying the Neumann MT! Happy you found a dope workflow and hope this helps 🙏
what would you be your Top 3 amp headphone to optimize the MM 500?
@@brokerabbit94 the RME ADI lineup, SPL Phonitor lineup, and the Chord Hugo 2 are really good DAC/headphone amp options and for just a headphone amp, the RNHP and SPL are solid! Hope this helps and be sure to demo before buying any of the above 🙏
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR you think a Babyface Pro FS would be fine with mm500s?
@ honestly, I don’t necessarily think it the best sound, I do prefer the UFX amp and even the 802 amp to the baby face I tried, but I do find the rme headphone amps to be fairly flattering sounding generally speaking so you could definitely learn to work the combination! The playback from the baby face headphone output just isn’t the most clear and detailed. Best way to find out is to try your current headphones on different DAC/Amps at your local store and listen for quality changes and differences. One you get a feel for how big or small of a difference you are hearing is, you can determine if you will require better for your mm500 purchase! Hope this helps 🙏
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR interestingly enough, I've read that the rme adi 2 DAC and the Babyface Pro fs amps are the same as far as headphone sound quality, the DAC only wins cuz it has hardware DSP.... Your thoughts? Thank you Also specifically, I know the Babyface Pro and pro FS are different models, I know the pro has distinctly worse headphone amps....
@ the headphones amps are certainly not the same in the ADI and the babyface, information on the RME specs can be found easily on their website or your could just ask Chat GPT and it’ll break things down for you. The converters are a vastly different quality as well and this alone would change the sound quite a bit from device to device. That said, the headphone amps quality will also create a variance between the playback in your monitors and in headphones if it’s not up to par which can be really bad because they you don’t have a controlled reference point as far as just the conversion goes. In my experience with the baby face, I didn’t like the sound of it for mixing and the headphone output wasn’t reliable for that either BUT I thought it worked pretty well as a production or beat making tool and I still got really good work done on it with the Focal’s I had at the time. Hope this helps 🙏
already got dt990 pro and apollo solo do i need DAC or not i never tried one before
@@REALEXIT you have a DAC inside your Apollo, it’s just a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) but there’s a big difference in detail and quality when using a more robust converter that is geared specifically towards playback. Moreover, most interfaces don’t have a very good headphone amp and the sound quality on headphones is often compromised because of that! That said those headphones are really solid 💯
you sold me on these headphones
Try to demo a pair to be sure it’s the right choice for you! That said, I’m sure you’ll love them 🙏
What are your thoughts on essential equipment to have for tracking something like vocals aside from monitors, room treatment and good mic. Is a plugin preamp as good as hardware? Is something like Apollo UAD plugins as good as hardware vocal chain?
It’s definitely a very good option, especially when you upsample to 96k when recording and when using an Apollo with their better conversion (like an Apollo 16 or 8), but analog sounds a bit better and has more clarity which will could also save you extra work in mixing. That said, if it doesn’t already sound good with the 1073 Apollo emulation, analog won’t save it! It will only make it 10-15% more clear and subjectively “better”! Hope this helps

I love my DT 1770s, DT 1990s, and focal clear mg pros
I have a pair of 1990s but since one of the drivers stopped working I ended up getting a pair of Neumann NDH 30s. I really like them. I have a producer friend who has the Focal clear mg and he loves them. I haven’t tried them yet.
@@RainAstonIV that’s a dope lineup bro, all really great sets 🔥 1770 vs 1990?
@ 1770s has more bass seeing as they’re closed back, while the 1990s has more air and seems more natural.
@ I haven’t ever tried the 1770’s but I know the 1990’s are great, thank you!
What Dac do you use? Agreed! Headphones have come so far. So much you can get done just with headphones
@@mrdiazzz007 I use the RME ADI 2/4 Pro SE as my DAC/main converter! Great headphone amps in it as well 👌
I work with the shure srh840a and srh1840 They're really good and my interface is the babyface pro fs My monitors are the m-audio av40 They do the job well , hoping to upgrade the monitors soon
@@Gadoora that’s a great setup, I’m glad you found a setup that inspires and works well for you brother! 🙏
@RAYNETHESAVIOUR appreciate it bro 🙏🏽
Just got some Audeze LCD-X and they rule.
@@andrewgoldringmusic congrats on the purchase! The LCD-X’s are super dope 🔥🔥🔥
My friend used to master all of his clients’ songs with the LCD X. Good purchase brother!
Nice green screen btw !
@@Ralymusic green screen?
Look at other videos lol he’s in his studio
I have the same exact setup with them rme 2/4 and audeze mm500. A Stellar combo.
@@7400TWISS I’m glad you are enjoying the combo 🙏 agreed!
Brother, I beg you not to pay for stuff to get your speakers or headphones EQd. We have measurments of hundreds of headphones on different headphone measurment rigs, and we have the well studied Harman target, just get the frequency response of your headphones and EQ it to the target, there are numerous websites that do this for you. Download free open source software like Equalizer APO (and the Peace GUI for nicer and easier user interface) for Windows and eqMac for MacOS that apply systemwide EQ on your PC. Going back to those websites, they will provide you with a .txt file that's compatible with for example Equalizer APO, you just insert the .txt file and EQAPO will recognise it and apply the EQ, you can modify this to your heart's content, unfortunately these things are more prevalent in the audiophile community and less so the audio engineer one. As for speakers, just get a measurment microphone and use REW (Room EQ Wizard) to EQ your monitors flat according to your room (resonances etc.), I recommend you watch Julian Krause's video on how to use REW. If you or anybody else needs help, let me know, I'll be happy to help out.
Why? Sonarworks brought out a lot of clarity in my headphones and also noticeably improved my listening environment on the monitors in my studio
@@josuastangl7140 One could interpret my comment to mean that I'm against EQing your speakers and headphones, I'm only saying that you shouldn't pay for it, there are better ways that are free, Sonarworks is a scam. Yep another great video thank you👍🏾So glad I stumbled upon this, as that is where I am at right now-on the hunt for the perfect headphone dac and converters!! As you know I have my eye on the RME ADI PRO fs and am also considering the Neumann MT48. Have you had the opportunity to listen to your headphones through the MT48 and if so what were your thoughts?
@@riasure glad to hear it! And I actually haven’t heard the headphone amps on the Neumann MT but I have used merging’s headphone amps on their Anubis interface. It sounds pretty good but I’m not sure if it’s the exact same build quality as with the Neumann MT because it’s also a lot pricier than the Neumann! I would air on the side of caution with more interfaces though as far as headphone outputs go!
@ Thanks so much for the advice and I will heed the warning re. interfaces, as I have always personally felt disappointed with their headphone amps(well I am sure there are good ones). I think I am just gonna stick with RME recommendation, but will demo it first as you also recommended. Thanks again🙌🏾🙏🏾
Between the BAE and the SPX, I choose a Shelford !!
@@Yannleon_video honestly, Shelford is 🔥! I support your choice 🙏

Thank you so much for the kind words 🙏
don't buy the expensive $10,000 mic, buy the cheap $2-3k mic... it's basically free
@@user-th6rh8zp3t you’re gonna wanna check back in for my new video coming out in a few days 😌
Yeah I hear you on trying gear first, had to take loss on a couple pieces, which I regret. As far as new gear, I try to rarely add new gear to my set up, there’s the learning curve aspect, then you have to fit it into your already established workflow, without it becoming a door stop.
totally! Especially when it comes to more robust analog investments like consoles, summing mixers, I/O etc. Definitely can be more of an obstacle than anything!
