    This is by far the best channel to learn about diagnostics. Most videos are hours long and assume you already know the ideas. These 15 min videos are perfect for people like me just getting into it.

    Wow, I'm so impressed. You wouldn't believe how many hundred times I had to explain all of that to the mechanic who wants to send me the instrument cluster for a repair due to ie. ABS fault on the cluster but the "diagnostic machine" doesn't say that ABS is faulty, so it must be the instrument cluster. Or because Google says that. From now on I'll be sharing that video with them :)
    Just for your information, or rather clarification as I assume you know that- it's not LOW SPEED CAN which doesn't use the termination and has a different voltages, it's the FAULT TOLERANT CAN (FT) characteristic. FT CAN is used in BMW @ 100kbit/s, FERRARI @ 50kbit/s, MB @ 125kbit/s and the "STANDARD" CAN which can go as slow as 40kbit/s is also used with the same speeds of 125kbit/s ie in FORD, JAGUAR, LAND ROVER. It's the same speed as FT CAN on this BMW.

    • @MechanicMindset
      @MechanicMindset  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha, send them my way for some learning 😁
      Ah ok yes, got you. I associate the trend of slow CAN not using the 120 terminal resistors (being able to run single wire mode). I’m familiar with the a high and medium speeds that do use them. That’s how we’ve been led to teach it with the manufacturer. Think the important lesson; if you have terminating resistors, there are more opportunities for problems 👍 cheers

    My 2008 328i runs and drives fines. But I can't get any scanner to communicate to the dme via the obd port. I see the dme runs up pass the ibs to the obd port. And notice both the obd and ibs is the same Grey color in the model you showed. Would a bad ibs interfare with the scanner trying to talk to the dme from the obd port?

    • @MechanicMindset
      @MechanicMindset  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, can you communicate to all the other modules?

    • @Winstonzm
      @Winstonzm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MechanicMindset Wow thanks for the crazy fast reply. I have just the most basic obd scanner. I can confirm it worked on the car prior to this problem. And can confirm the scanner works on other cars. When I plug it into the e90 is says "no obd ll response" so I can't access anything through the scanner. Thats Lead me to checking all the fuses which were good. Then checking the compartment in the engine bay where the dme is housed. No signs of water damaged check the connectors and everything looked good. Disconnected the connectors going into the jbe junction box one by one. Same no luck. Disconnected abs module same thing. Should I just continue trying to unplug modules to see if thats what's holding up the com line?

    • @MechanicMindset
      @MechanicMindset  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Winstonzm So there are just 2 wires to the gateway (JBE I think) for diagnostics. Pin 6 & 14 on obd socket. Some people mess with these wires to prevent theft so I would start checking everything is ok at the obd. If it starts and runs, the whole CAN network is probably ok.

    Great video. I had a very similar fault on a Mini Cooper S. ABS module DTCs, Christmas tree lights on, wipers going etc. Even the sun roof wouldn’t work. From memory I think we also had ‘voltage low’ errors. Turned out to be a faulty fuse box module. Had to replace and program the new module to fix the problem. Your videos are amazing! Very clearly explained. I do have a curiosity though: what could happen if the 12V radio supply wire touches the CAN-low wire? (the wires are located right next to each other in the quad-lock connector). I've done this on my bmw E60, by mistake, while installing a bluetooth module, and i'm not sure if something gone wrong with the can network/modules. Also, how can i test if everything is alright? I've noticed that everytime i'm turning on the ignition, it activates the fuel pump for 20 seconds...it wasn't doing that before touching these wires together. Many thanks!

    • @MechanicMindset
      @MechanicMindset  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you enjoy the videos! The network in the radio shouldn’t have any effect on the fuel pump; different network. The 12v short on CAN will not have damaged anything. I do it all the time in training. I’m fact, if it is low speed CAN, that network will still operate as normal! As long as you can communicate with things, network is ok. Re the fuel pump, I can’t remember the pump running for 20 seconds, but if you have a power train network problem, I think the pump will run continuously

    I have almost identical problem with Vectra C 2.0 2002 (ABS and some other lights on but ABS is still working, can't use turn signals, horn and full beam headlights) but after 20 to 40 minutes of driving (when something worms up or dries) everything starts working well. When I start the engine then RPM and speed indicators drop to zero for a moment exactly every 45 seconds and when that happens 4 times then the RPM and speed indicators stay at zero and the warning lights turn on. After turning the engine off and back on everything repeats again and for the next 4 x 45 seconds everything works well. I removed the CIM and cleaned all the connectors but still the same. When the warning lights are on the error reported by OPCOM is "No communication with CIM". I removed and cleaned UEC, all fuses and some other connectors and added another battery negative to chassis wire but still couldn't find what is causing the problem. The same problem on many Vectra B 1.6i cars could be solved by just removing the cabin light bulb.

There is also a gateway but this just connects the different networks, like a translator. The gateway can be combined in another module or be separate

    Now when I rescan there are no engine fault codes but its pulled up a Body U 1602 CAN line error code but theres not engine light come on. Ive tried searching for a fix on this but its proving harder than I thought. I know its a bit cheeky , but would you have any idea where I need to start checking and or looking at. Some people say to ignore it if theres no engine light coming on .

    Just one mention. Week ago had a Porsche Macan in my shop, it throw communication codes all over modules. Couldn't communicate with pasm module. I disconnected it, thinking it was disturbing the can network, but nothing changed couse it was steering rack electronics making problems and blocking pasm module communcation. Strangly I COULD communicate with the steering rack :)

    Hi, I have 2008 e60 535i with the jb4. Do you know if it causes no communication issues with the dme? When bmw dealership tried to connect their scanner they said they can not communicate with any modules. I even brought it to a local garage which they showed me that ista+ with Dan was not able to communicate with any as well. If the jb4 is interfering with the communication to the me how can new modules, battery or keys be programmed?

  • @JeanFrancisD
    @JeanFrancisD 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mechanic Mindset, Great videos, I'm trying to diagnose a lost communication problem over CAN Bus in a Chrysler product and you've helped me understand a lot better how CAN bus networks works. I tested the network today with an oscilloscope and I wasn't able to se any interference in the messages. I was worried about some big spike at the end of messages (up to 5V in can high and down to 0 in can low) But seeing this video I see that you have similar spikes in voltage. Is that normal? since you don't seem to mind them I'm guessing theses are normal? Also the network doesn't have a terminal resistance of 60 Ohm like its supposed to, I get 40.7 Ohm instead. I'm currently trying to isolate the module that does that but I didn't have any luck with the oscilloscope, everything looks normal. My problem is also intermittent, the Jeep can drive fine for hours until every module freaks up in the dash. Thanks!

    • @MechanicMindset
      @MechanicMindset  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, yes the spike at the start of the message is normal.
      I’ve not come across 40ohms before, but look in the common modules that all models have (ie engine, ABS)
      The scope will be a good tool to capture the intermittent fault. Just test in a long time base and zoom after the fault happens to see what it is 👍

    • @JeanFrancisD
      @JeanFrancisD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your awnser. I just found that an aftermarket device that I installed in the Jeep to bypass a security module in 2018+ Fiat/Chrysler products to be able to plug diagnostic tool made it drop to 40.7 Ohm. When I remove the security bypass the network goes back to 59.6 Ohm.
      This device was installed after my CANBus problem started (trying to diagnose it), At least I can rule this out of my symptoms.. Next step is most likely to go drive it with the oscilloscope and try to catch it when it happens!

    • @BOPotstill
      @BOPotstill 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeanFrancisD Likely the bypass had its own internal terminating resistor thus dropping the CAN resistance to your observed 40 ohms. Not really a problem, but it can happen even in certain OEM applications where the manufacturer installs 2 terminators and uses another component that has an internal terminator as well.

Quick question- @around 14 mins you use the scope to check can- you refer to low speed can and high speed can but the scope shows the blue and the red reflecting each other on both, I’m assuming you’re just checking between obd 6 and 14 on both? Terminal 15 is not communicating with the CAS which is then not engaging ACC (I think its the K BUS)
    I know Its a communication error I just cant figure out where/what CAN
    All lights work (everything works that does not require the FOB (again... Issue with ACC not being engaged))
    CAS, DME, Key have bean replaced by me, also reprogrammed (not by me, that would not turn out well)
