For those who wonder why Ali would fight a guy like this so late in his career same with Ron Lyle… a few reasons, sluggers throw fewer punches, and most of them take longer to get there, giving him the best chance to avoid them . Ali understood he could take a punch so at this stage the best way to win was to fight a slugger take a few shots, have him get arm weary, and then either knock him out or win by decision by out jabbing him enough and throwing combinations in the last 15 seconds against his exhausted opponent, to win the close rounds However, he was so slow here. It was hard to watch. He certainly did not beat Shavers, but scored enough points along with his awesome reputation, and for the last time got the champions nod, along with his incredible 15th round where he dug deep and found the well for the last time, I’m not counting Spinks when he got in shape he still had enough to be in an eight fight, novice and reclaim the title, but This close gift wrapped win was a message that Ali ignored.
It's clear, the majority or shavers fans were the loudest. Its like everybody wanted Ali to get a nice beating from a well respected boxer..I respect ali,he dropped huge guys, skillful guys and talented ones because he was more skillful, talented and pushed himself with self belief to be the best above the rest.Much respect to both guys, what a fight.

Ali understood he could take a punch so at this stage the best way to win was to fight a slugger take a few shots, have him get arm weary, and then either knock him out or win by decision by out jabbing him enough and throwing combinations in the last 15 seconds against his exhausted opponent, to win the close rounds
However, he was so slow here.
I was surprised that there wasn't a rematch.
Earnie Shavers is a dad Evander Holyfield
😹😹😹😹
Evander surpassed his dad, this is quite the heartwarming story ngl.

Multiple times Ali got tagged and his legs sagged, he spent a lot of the fight trying to get his legs back.
For a guy who supposedly hit like Godzilla, Shavers seemed to be on the losing end of most of his big fights.
Shavers era un osso duro ...
Nine plus six rounds back then, endurance 💯
I think just 30 seconds more and Shavers was brutally knocked out
