This is a role forever associated with the magnificent Gwen Verdon, but must say, of all the other actresses I have seen in this role, Debbie Allen excels. Same goes for her Anita in West Side Story.

Come on , I know it was a film , so many 'takes ' may have been needed , and special effects included , but Shirley Maclaine's dancing and acting in the film , surely make hers the definitive version ; I did enjoy this though !

Wow. I think Chita Rivera is almost 20 years older than others. I would've like to have seen some more Bebe. Bebe was very smooth and crisp for that short time.

Bebe was late 30s, Chita was about 65 at the time. I saw her late ‘99 playing Roxie in Chicago in London (she picked up part of the North American tour from Toronto and then was in Vegas for a time both opposite Stephanie Pope then came to London opposite Valarie Pettiford). She was on another level and massively elevated every performer on that stage. She stole the show whilst not trying to do so: at no point did she upstage anyone but she still won the whole audience over. I think she was just shy of 67 at the time but could out-dance anyone on that stage.

Bebe was in the best shape dance wise, but I bet Debbie in her prime and with rehearsal would have blown the roof with her dancing. Debbie also was so much in character I loved it. Gwen IS Charity but Debbie is one I would love to see as well.

I saw Debbie in the 1986 revival. She did a great job. Too bad about the awful movie. Shirley McClain sunk that ship.

Sorry....I have to disagree...Debbie Allen was woefully miscast, in this role and it shows in the execution. She cannot sing, does not dance here and one can see why Fosse couldn't stand her in the part. All one has to do is look at her up against Rivera and Neuwirth to know that she did not take Gwen Verdon's direction very well.

Oh plz Debbie hit every beat she was suppose too and judging by this whole dance it did not show case all of her actual talent just cuz this whole dance and song was meant for laughing purposes and if you just judged her off of this performance alone then you would be rudely mistaken by the actual talent of Ms.Debbie Allen……. just saying cuz that lady was a beast…… is a beast…… and will continue to be one along with a queen.
