As a goth ( with a very personal cultural twist on it) since 22 years now, it is always funny to see that some years, you are avant garde so fashion week inspiring, sometimes, you kind of blend in because everyone is wearing black, and others people look at you as if you were an outdated antique dusty halloween decoration.

goth for 24 years, here. you are absolutely correct. we truely have seen this a couple of times over the last 25 years. it goes hand in hand with this whole hatred/fetishization cycle we are exposed to, constantly. people either hate us or they fetishize us. now that the bigtiddygothgf has run her course, its back to being insulted and accused of being pet sacrificing satanists, and to being a halloween decoration

I have been wearing a mix of boho and grunge style for 17 years now...with colorful makeup and all.

sorry to all people in the subcomments: all this "-core" stuff isnt real. and to argue about how "that is xy-core" and "NO! thats clearly yx-core!" is absolutely pointless and serves no purpose. its like back in the day when black metal heads made up a whole new sub genre just because someone played a riff 5bpm faster than what was already established

The main issue: most people are not in touch with what they actually like. Get in touch with what you like and decide what you actually want to project : power, beauty, approachability, etc. Then factor in reality (body, weight, weather, budget, activities).

I learned long ago I did not want to follow trends, because I didn't actually like a lot of the trendy clothing styles whenever they were popular. I would pick thepieces I liked, and added them to my regular collection. I know what I like, the styles I like, and prefer, and I don't really care if it's popular or trendy while I'm wearing it! 😅

I really think people don't know who they are. She made a very good point towards the end of this video where she mentioned that you would think there would be no trends at all. Because it is literally socially acceptable to wear whatever you want outside your house (just assuming the bare minimum is covered by clothing of some type) everyone is aware of just how much damage it is doing to follow trends. So it weird how there are trends at all. But I think people have even less of an idea of who they are as a person now. Because there are so many options. Who do you want to be? Who are you fundamentally at your core? Seems like a lot of people don't even ask themselves these questions ever. If you don't know who you are, you try on a bunch of different skins hoping to find one that feels right.

I have many 100% silk, 100% cashmere, cotton and wool items and machine wash them on Delicate cycle in COLD water, then hang to dry or dry on low heat. Its really not that much more effort to wash natural fibers. Back in the 2000s, being a tall, curvy Black girl meant that most fashion trends didn’t work for me or my body type. Finding clothes that fit was a struggle. But now, I can easily shop in the tall section and find pieces that fit me perfectly. With my pear shape and prominent iliac crest, those 2000s low rise jeans and crop tops were a nightmare. Today, I get to wear all the crop tops I want, paired with my holy grail high waisted jeans and I feel absolutely fabulous in them.
Some of my friends think that at 35, I should start “dressing my age,” but honestly, I wear whatever makes me feel comfortable and what flatters my body. I’ve learned over time that even if I love the look of a pencil dress, it’s just simply not made for my shape. Instead, I put in a little extra effort to find pieces that truly complement my figure, and I feel great doing it. I value comfort over looks 100%, urban and street wear is my daytime style.

I agree. One issue most of us have is our bodies change because of age and/or weight. Anna Wintour has the same figure since she was young woman. I went from a size 4-6 34-26-36 measurements in my 20 and 30s to a 39-29-41 measurements in my 50s and now 60. I cannot wear the same style, especially the micro short hemlines and 4inch heels (my feet hurt) of my 20s,30s.

So in recent years I’ve started to incorporate more and more rock and grunge/90’s elements into my wardrobe while still maintaining it office appropriate and I am loving it. Your introduction mentioned your collection of fashion magazines from the last 10 years. In a similar vein, I refer to style magazines from the 1940’s & ‘50s, which have exquisite artistic photos from Erwin Blumenfeld, Horst, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Irving Penn, and clothes worn by models who knew how to pose, and walk elegantly. Suzy Parker, Lisa Fonssagives, Dovima, and even one of Capote’s swans- Babe Paley, make today’s style icons seem smarmy, adolescent, and tacky.

Discovering the style "essence systems" has been a great tool to figure out what works on me, why it works, and how to build on that, instead of just trying to emulate what works on other people.

I buy most of my clothing from thrift stores, and I’ve found that even if it says dry clean only, if it’s made it this far, it will survive the trial. I’ve had zero clothing casualties so far using this method. I do hang things to dry if it doesn’t specify that they go in the dryer.

Men frequently imitate idols & participate in hegemonic masculine embodiment through clothes. Should b careful about that. Men r also extremely affected by toxic body ideals. The way men participate in fashion is often 2 conform. & trends still shift quickly 4 men. So this is certainly applicable 2 men, even if less-so. I can recognise this cuz I’m a man but I chose my own sense of fashion.
Men’s fashion trends typically deny personal style, instead being a communication of conformity. It’s a very different discussion 4 men. Fashion & gendered behaviour is very segregated. U actually need a video specifically on men’s culture around clothes & fashion 2 cater tips 4 men.

Agree! Men get ignored in fashion. But tbf much less men are into fashion/trends than women. My husband likes to dress well and dips his toes into trends. But he gets overwhelmed by the sheer volume of clothes and options, so he asks me to help him shop. He has gotten much better at doing it solo. It just takes practice and a clear idea of what you want. So my guess is many men just don’t shop regularly because of this. My husband learned about proportions, color palettes, fabric composition etc from me. He often analyses my outfits for fun (you did this because of that? So the vibe is XY?) No he is not gay or bi 😄just Italian.
So you can easily extrapolate all this fashion info to yourself and adapt it to a male body. The “rules” or tips are exactly the same in the end.

Unfortunately, I am tall and curvy so the casual classy ish style that is trendy now is the one that works for me and has always worked for mr. It is kind of annoying to see everyone looking like this but - I LOVE and obsess over south Asian textiles prints etc. I collect swaths of fabric like khadi and cotton which is ideal for the humid climate here. I draw or take pics of stuff I like and give the fabric to my mom's seamstress and she brings my closet to life AT HALF THE PRICE. Also mega-custom. I also collect pieces from handloom and handicrafts markets. And I am darkly inclined so veer towards darkers prints, spiky ethnic jewelry etc. Most of my wardrobe is 5+ years old. With a lot of them reaching a decade very soon.
I have only one real leather item- strappy gladiator flats which I bought in 2017 in a Delhi market for less than 3 dollars. (250 inr). Idk how but it is still going strong- without any repairs or resoling or anything. Its has a cute fringe on the achilles heel side and it always gets compliments.

Wore a pair of $25 combat boots to death from 2017-2018, so sprung for a pair of Doc Marten boots and haven't looked back. They're my daily wear. It feels so good just having my go-to shoes, a pair of sneakers for when I need comfort, and a doc loafer for nice occasions.
But on the flip, I recently tried on a pair of bootcut jeans like I used to love as a kid-teen and felt the weight of every wasted straight leg pant I'd bought since.
I tried forcing turtlenecks for so long because of them working for my "long" neck, but they just aren't comfortable for me so I'm finally putting a stop to that. But recognizing I do like high crew necks, so I pass up any shirt that isn't that neckline.
It's really easy to think we aren't influenced, but influence can come from so many places! I'm proportioned like my dad and he one time made a comment about turtlenecks looking good on us both. I've enjoyed the "dark academia" look and thought I needed to wear straight cut, pleated front pants, but they do not work with my wide hips.

This is a really well-made video! The only thing I would add, when figuring out your style, is to ask yourself: What pieces of clothing/accessories do I like from a specific style/era? Would I be comfortable wearing it?
For example, I have always liked the gothic-victorian-vampire aesthetic, when watching films. However, if I went out with a big long frilly black dress to work or to the grocery shop, this wouldn't be appropriate. So instead, I bought a loose-fitting corset top and a ruffled long skirt, which look more "down to earth".
It's similar with the goth style - I like the rebel vibes, but do not feel comfortable in short skirts. So I opt out for long ones with metal details instead.

Normally I hate when my phone hears me and I see ads for things I’ve mentioned like *ballet flats*
I’ve been tormenting myself about whether to buy a pair and then your video popped up just as I was about to buy my first pair of shoes (ballet flats)
I was born and raised in NYC and have copied my fashionable mother and my 95 YO mom in law who worked in couture and of course made all her own clothes. She taught me about fabrics and .. oh I could go on and on .. even buttons matter. (Her button draw from the 1950’s onward is incredible!)
Both these women have influenced me in some areas. In others I forged my own way. My favorite rule of my mom was no shoes. Just a few pair of great classic pumps, otherwise boots and sandals are all you need.
So I hated that I felt the need to buy ballet flats. I’m 5’11” and not a person whose wardrobe would ever call for a pair ballet flats. I mention my height because it’s the biggest influence for my style and the pressure for me to have a *studded ballet flat or loafer* was the first time I felt pressure to buy something *to be fashionable*
I cannot thank you enough for this video. It was smart • intelligent • well written • great visuals • well edited .. and so educational.
    Thank you! :)

Although trends can be fun to play with, your style is consistency. It’s what will make people respect and admire you. And you dont even have to have an extravagant sense of style, but if you are consistent people will see you are someone who stays true to your essence and what you like. And that inspires respect for anyone, bc it shows you are sure of yourself and is not willing ro compromise your authenticity for temporary things.

I've always been a baggy pants kinda person, I did the skinny jeans, it has it's place (in otk boots .fe.), but you can't imagine how my inner teenagers heart beats right now at all those baggy jeans. Back then I was so desperately looking for those cuts, now they're everywhere, also for women (and imho they suit many people way better). Back then you only could get them for men in skate or army shops.
Had a few phases, some things stick with you more than others. To some you'll always relate (if you had them), some are a memory of the past for good. It's a fun thing is to try and incorporate those core elements important to you into a new language. More "grown up" whatever that would mean, with different cuts or combinations.

I added some newer stylistic choices like more relaxed silouettes or oversized hoodies a couple of years ago - it was both trendy at the time and complemented my body shape and personal comfort greatly and easily became one of my go-to choices of clothing. With the modern y2k trends like fitted skimpy tops or low-waisted jeans I do look and sometimes feel out of the loop and not fashionable and can get insecure over it, but I guess my style is consistent through the years, so that's great to remind myself of from time to time.

A point of order. Historically, trends did not stick around for decades. It was fairly cheap to get clothing refashioned.
For example, there were two different bustle eras. And the bustles looked drastically different.
Clothes changed dramatically from year to year. The changes were just different from how they change today because they didn't have sunscreen.

Ever since I started sewing my own capsule wardrobe. I feel like that keeps the "following the micro trends" at bay. I noticed that I'm not buying from fast fashion as much anymore. I prefer buying vintage sewing patterns from the 70s, 80s & 90s since those decades pretty much had the biggest influence on me growing up. If I had to describe my personal style it would probably be Marc Jacobs Heaven-esqe (ish), mixed with lots of mismatched colorful printed maxi skirts/dresses and flowy, lettuce hem tops. I practically live in all things lettuce hem in middle/high school and you can't get me to ever stop wearing that sewing finish. I prefer planning my sewing projects than scrolling Shein for whatever is trending.
Sewing a capsule wardrobe has forced me to create and sew items that can work with everything in my closet. Sewing my wardrobe is a very involved process from creating fabric swatch journals to choosing the fabrics, buttons and trimmings. I purposefully stay away from synthetic fabrics (unless vintage secondhand, i.e. crochet baby blankets, vintage bedsheets & deadstock fabrics from previous decades) and flimsy buttons because they simply don't last very long and putting so much work into a handmade garment only for it to fall apart in the wash doesn't make sense.
At the end of the day I sew clothes that make me happy. Just won a bunch of PowerPuff Girls vintage bedsheets off of eBay and going to make a wrap maxi skirt and maybe some flared pants depending on how much I have left over 😊

Great breakdown. Felt it when you noted that what's being worn now is rarely personal style but a reflection of a current trend. ❤

Ahh, it is so wonderful not being on social media. I havent engaged with a trend since those sheer button up shirts were trendy like 10 or more years ago. I still have mine 🙂 its such a cute summer shirt!

15:37 I get that, but how do you keep the same clothing piece for a long time when you're struggling with your weight and body shape changing for years? And how do you adapt your new body shape to how it should be embraced by clothing because your bone structure might not change, but-at least for me-weight is gained in different parts of the body EVERY TIME. sometimes i have more thighs, sometimes i have less thighs and more arms. How can I even have a constant style that speaks to my taste when not even my body keeps constantly in the same way?

Hi hi! Great points! I have gone through some big closet clean outs due to weight fluctuation before, so I get you. Did you find there were any clothes that you repurchased? For example, a style of Levis you love but just need a different size for? If you feel overwhelmed by dressing for your body then I would suggest shifting your focus towards the "soul" of your style, what subcultures or special interests do you have that you can express in your clothing no matter your body shape? Hope that helps and good luck on your fashion journey!

About the “low quality clothing”. Let’s be very honest here. Pieces that you hand wash, dry clean, air dry carefully maintain are going to last longer than ones you simply throw into the wash - cheap or expensive. Your shirt from Zara wouldn’t have fallen apart if you’d hand washed it. I’m sick of people acting like it’s the quality of the garment, not the care they give said garment that determines its longevity. Treat your cheap clothing like it’s expensive and it will last decades. I’ve owned very expensive clothing and most of it will not hold up to rough treatment any better than cheap clothing. And guess what - cashmere with spaghetti stains are just as ruined just as polyester - it’s just a more expensive stain on one.
My advice? Buy what allows you to both enjoy your wardrobe and pump as much cash as possible into a 401k. Clothing is not an “investment”.

My best choice in life was to be minimalism.
I have 2 pair of good jeans which fit me marvelous, 2 long skirts, 5 party dresses, and few blouses to work and street tshirts.
    3 good winter coats.
3 sneakers, 2 gym shoes, 2 high heels. 5 purses
If I buy something, I'll donate something.

Dressing for yourself instead of trends also encourages people to learn how to care for their clothes better. If I don't really care about my clothes and I just wear them to fit in, I'm not gonna care as much about them as if I have them simply because I enjoy them. I learned to mend my clothes simply because I love the items I already have and I don't wanna get rid of them over a few tiny holes. Plus the mended and DIY parts on my clothes makes them feel more personal

Really glad i found this video!
This particular thing is what has been keeping me and mom beefing since i was somewhere 13 until now (22)
My own personal style will be always black/white clothing, and simple pants/jeans, that doesn't show much of a color basically everything that looks casual and wearable in almost everyday of my life. Im not the type of person that has many events to go to, so wearing a formal looking clothes was never my "go to" choice.
And unfortunately this bothers my mom a lot, she would say something like:
    - you're a girl, dress more feminine
    - you're wearing the same clothes almost everyday, everyone will think that you're poor
Back then i would just did what she said so she could stop yapping. Tried to buy some feminine clothing (that my mom told me to) and guess what, i only wear it for about a month before i finally getting tired of seeing myself in that clothing, it wasn't my style at all and i hate looking at myself wearing it (this also made my mom complains: "i already buy it for you and you're not gonna wear it?")
She still complains until now (but not as frequent as she used to) but i learn to just brush it off, since i know my outfits are still in good conditions and buying more clothes so that you will not "look poor" will eventually make you poor instead :D

Blocking every trace i see of an "influencer" or famous person on my only social media has helped me SO MUCH. I keep meme pages and some book stuff, and that's it. The itch to buy, buy, buy has gone. The "need" to change myself, gone too. I did this when i was sure i wanted to get lip fillers 5 years ago. Surprise surprise i dont want it anymore. Influencers and celebrities are poison for the brain.

Disagree. Sometimes I see girls with the 'hottest summer body" , also super skinny wearing Tank tops but still it doesnt look good. Some people who are overweight wear big hoodies and baggy Jeans, Still doenst look good though. I mean sure everyone should be able to wear what they want but it should still be good looking

Loved the video. Honestly, it's super inspiring. As someone who loves dressing up I found myself in a horrible pattern of buying clothes and not actually wearing them because I jumping around from one trend to another. I've been recently looking inward to change my wastful life style with getting rid of shit that no longer suits me and watching your video gave me some food for thought so thank you 😊❤

Love your take on this. I wanted to add an exception to the kibbe rule.. I think of the Olsen twins who are petite and have worn oversized coats for years, it’s not necessarily “flattering” but they look really chic in their oversized trenches and wool coats

it’s so funny to see these eras come and go so quick whereas I still have the same sense of style I’ve had since high school. girls wearing flare jeans or whatever will go “omg your outfit is sooooo y2k” and I giggle cause I remember getting made fun of like crazy for these same outfits years ago. idk pry my 6” rise bootcut jeans from my cold dead hands. hoping everyone here finds a personal style that makes them happy too!!

Besides vintage items, the oldest items in my wardrobe are 20 years old. They are teeshirts. Next in line is a 15 year old floral dress. Then a 14 year old coat. About half my war is from 2010. Most of my knickers are from before 2010. They are not the prettiest bug they still keep my bum warm.
All of those items are from fast fashion companies. Part of the problem is that people are sucked in and heavily influenced, unable to think for themselves. They cannot ask if they really need x item, they just buy it. The reduction in quality is another issue. Fast fashion used to be decent quality. The older fast fashion items in my wardrobe were not special or expensive, they were just from the stores people now love to hate (primark/Penneys, h&m, zara, supermarkets). Another issue is that people don't know how to look after their clothes, they would sooner bin something than fix it. I'm lucky that I don't follow any trend makers and I don't care about what is trendy. The sooner people start thinking about what they like and stop worrying about who watching them and what trends they should be following, the better.

I love classic clean lines, no patterns, minimalist style. Used to get made fun of for being "boring". Now I'm fashionable! 😂😂
My new approach is to save all my jeans/trousers and simply swap them to whatever is trendy. When skinny jeans are back in (well they're currently returning aren't they lol) I'll just dig those back out. Store my baggy trousers away for two years until they're back again. Happy to follow trends a little BUT I WILL NEVER WEAR PATTERNS

Loved this video. Especially about buying items that fit your lifestyle and physique. My grandparents taught me the importance of getting my clothes tailored and that I’d feel better in clothes that fit me better. One thing about building your personal style is when you look for specific items the quality is poor or they’re selling it for outrageous prices on second hand websites due to thrifting becoming so popular. At this point I’m gonna start making my own clothes
