    Panasonic is known for poor autofocus so can we get this working well on the Lumix S1H?

    01:45 - Autofocus settings that worked well for me
    I tend not to use autofocus much when filming but I understand the need for fast, accurate autofocus when needed. For example, when using the DJI Ronin M stabilizer, it is virtually impossible to focus manually when "running and gunning".
    I found a workable solution for the Panasonic GH5 video autofocus when it was released because "out of the box", it was awful.
    Best Autofocus Settings for Panasonic GH5: • Panasonic GH5 - Best A...
    I think people need to understand that the Panasonic focus ecosystem is different to that of its competitors. Canon are the king of autofocus with their Dual Pixel AF which I love. It works as soon as you switch the camera on.
    For whatever reason, the Panasonic Mirrorless range of cameras need more work. Stills photography? Brilliant! No complaints at all with focussing for stills.
    There are so many options for focussing in the menu, it can become overwhelming. Admittedly I only had this camera for 10 days when I did this review but I eventually found some settings that worked quite well.
    I think with some more tweaking and fine tuning, I will be able to arrange a bunch of custom settings that work well in various environments. For example, filming in a run and gun situation is vastly different to filming an interview or review video such as this one. Horses for courses.
    I love Panasonic cameras and am happy to put a bit more effort in to find those settings. The rest of the Panasonic S1H is more than worth that little extra effort required for effective focussing.

    Hey, what a great and inspiring video. Fully agree with you: the AF comes close to the Sony and Canon, and even at low light is has become much better with recent SW-upgrades.
    And the colors of this camera at C4K 422 10-I (400 Mb/sec) are insane, even at higher ISO - as is the IBIS.

      Thanks, appreciate the feedback 👍
      The more I use this camera the less I can find wrong with it or think of stuff I'd like to add. High Dual Native ISO is so clean! I wanna shoot more in the dark 😁

      The AF in the S1H will NEVER come close to Sony and Canon for video. It can be made better by careful configuration, but contrast detection is just inherently slower and less reliable than phase detection. For static conditions, contract detection has the potential for being more accurate than phase detection, but it will always be slower. Beyond that, the Panasonic implementation of contact detection seems to have additional issues that reduce its ability to track and properly focus moving subjects.

    Hey, it's a nice video. But in my camera, I can't choosethe 'autofocus setting mode'. Why is it like that!

      Is the top (left) dial set to "M" video mode?

    Good review.. what lens are you using on the S1H?
    I imagine a Panasonic lens which opens all the features you mentioned, as when on a 3 party lens like I am using a Sigma (Sigma art lens with the Sigma ef adapter), many of the Auto Fucus options are greyed out.
    What really bothered me is how the focus zoom / assist does not work when in record.. (the punch in feature)
    I used manual focus in an IV, and when the lens was fully open it is hard to keep critical focus.
    I can punch in using my Blackmagic Video Assist 12g HDR monitor I shoot with, but it's hard focusing that way with the CRAZY SLOW HDMI delay which isn't good at all.. So correcting focus while in record is hard!!
    What are your thoughts??

      Cheers for your feedback and comments 👍
      My initial thoughts are that I hope Panasonic spend more time and R&D on the focusing with their cameras soon. Canon and Sony are smashing it.
      In this video, I was using the Panasonic 24-105mm f4 which is pretty good, especially for stills. I did rent the Panny 24-70S 2.8 and 70-200S 2.8 a while ago and they were rapid. Beautiful lenses although they're pricey!
      As for the other things you mentioned, I need to dig deeper into all the focus options...there are so many. I must admit I've been spoiled by the Dual Pixel Autofocus on the Canon's.
      Edit: I'm filming an interview today and will be using the Canon 16-35L 2.8 in manual 😉

      @@NickStubbs I have that Canon glass.. wide so not so bad on focus.. I was mainly on a Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 ART lens, and once in record the features drop off for focus assist in manual.

      @@lighthackerslimited Hmm. Could Panasonic be throttling those features to encourage us to buy Panny glass 🤔

    To get the best AF-C performance in video, you really need to shoot at 60 FPS.

    whats the best Af mode for handheld shooting ?

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Possibly the one I used in the example above but I need to test more. I used "S" (single) on the switch and 225-Area on the menu.

    For me the AF custom setting is unselectable because the focus mode is set to MF. How do I turn that off? It's already off on the lens itself

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Silly question perhaps but is the focus switch on the back set to manual or autofocus? Sorry if that's an obvious one...I've sometimes made that mistake 🥴

      So sorry to only now reply. Rewatching this video two years later-- I get the same error message with the switch on S, C or MF sadly, but it says "This item cannot be set in the current mode: AFS" even if I have the dial on C. The "Continuous AF" setting is also greyed out and says "This menu item cannot be set."

    • @stoneylonesomeASMR
      @stoneylonesomeASMR 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Autofocus is able to work in the moment for me if I hit the AF ON button next to the dial, but only that way. It doesn't maintain autofocus without me routinely hitting that button.
