Our situations are very similar! My MacBook was financed through Best Buy using the same deal and it remains a vital tool in my everyday life. Solo travel has also been one of my BEST investments. Your videos, among those of others, inspired me to solo travel to Japan in 2018. I fell in love with the country and made another solo visit in September of this year! I traveled around the country for nearly three weeks and it was amazing.
Your solo travel stories was one of the many reasons I ended my relationship of 13 years just a few weeks ago. My boyfriend would never allow me to solo travel. In fact there were many things he did not want me to do. I realized that it wasn’t necessarily solo traveling that I wanted it was traveling in general. I wanted more of it instead just once a year to the same place. And I did get to go to some places with my best friend but he never wanted me to go. Like I said. Many other reasons I needed to change my life and let him go.
jessicaaaturbox3 awww thank you. It was hard but in the end I need to be happy. Not try to make people happy or please them. I need to start with myself and if I meet someone else in the future it will be a great person not trying to hold me back. He’ll be an asset and support me in every way. As I will him. I turned 40 this month and it really was time to change and start living. I know I should have ended it sooner but it took me a quite long to realize this was going to make me miserable.
Julia Ortiz thank you so much traveling is such a wonderful experience. It makes me very happy. Other cultures and people. Beautiful landscapes... everything!
Allison’s solo travel video got me thinking too. My husband at the time was not into travel like I am. His idea of travel is 2 hours away. It got me thinking. We are separated now ( other issues led to this too) but your travel videos got me thinking and led to positive changes in my life. 👍🏻
My best purchase was definitely the tickets for a 3 month solo trip to Tanzania and Malawi. I left 10 days after my high school graduation. That trip made me an adult and completely changed everything about my life. 10 years, 30 countries, and 5 international moves later, I'm so happy with the decisions I've made.
Investing in a good vacuum was life changing for us 😂 we have pets and a baby and I had no idea how bad every vacuum we ever owned was until we had a really good vacuum
I have a Shark Zero-M stick vacuum and it’s particularly great for those with long hair because it has a self cleaning mechanism and my hair never gets caught in the head. (My hair sheds daily and it’s 26”). The suction strength is amazing- I vacuum everyday for the past year and it’s motor is still running strong!
Mine was hands down my little puppy! I struggle a lot with anxiety and he completely changed my life. I remember going back and forth for weeks on whether it was a sensible decision for a single working woman in her early twenties but honestly it’s the best decision I ever made.
I did! I saved for the initial expenses and always make sure I have some rainy day money in case of unexpected vets bills which (he’s almost two) there have been a couple, but in terms of feeding him, I give him what my vet recommends, he’s a small dog so doesn’t eat much, being a poodle grooming is expensive so I would say overall it probably costs me less than £50 a month on average to keep him including fleaing, worming, food, treats , grooming, etc and most expenses and that’s just so worth it to me. I would rather go without a new lipstick or a few extra drinks out one evening and have him because he brings so much joy to my life :)
my best purchase would be my masters degree :) i’m 20 years old and moved from california to the uk to study here, mostly to have an excuse to travel more cheap through europe while still feeling like i’m moving forward with my life. i’ve had trips to 8 different european countries in the past year. travelling can be really cheap if you stay in hostels and cook for yourself 😉
As a 24 year old, I also appreciate the age at which this video is being made- I've made some of these purchases (ticket to Madrid, computer) but got great insight with others and obviously have a couple of separate ones of my own! :)
I also live in the Seattle area and I agree 100% on investing in a good raincoat. I have a Northface 3in1 and I wear that thing CONSTANTLY in the fall and winter.
TOTALLY agree on the couch - first adult purchase for sure! We upgraded from a hand-me-down we got in college to a nice, plush, deep sectional, and there isn't a day that goes by without us raving about it!
Totally agree! I hadn’t traveled outside North America then when I was 23 I decided to stop waiting for an opportunity to travel and just booked my first solo trip to Bali. Best decision I’ve been traveling ever since!
Omg your hair story, is so my hair story too!! I loved the big chopped for the freedom and detachment but I can’t lie, I miss my long hair. My best purchase was a dog, she completely changed the way I thought and saw the world. Being a dog mom is so legit and beautiful!
As somebody who’s coming up on 26 and feeling a little lost lately this was really inspiring so thank you 💜 this was my first of your videos and definitely subscribing!
Just make sure to off gas your mattress to get rid of the VOCs since we do spend so much time on our mattresses; they are laden w various chemicals like formaldehyde and flame retardant chemicals which are known to cause cancer and nervous-system disorders. I have been absolutely loving the content that you've been producing over the last year or so. I feel so inspired watching your travel videos, and so hopeful in hearing how you've reflected on the changes in your life. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us!
Love this and the haircut. I’m 37 and have been growing my hair to my waist as one last hurrah before I’m old (lol). I achieved the length earlier this year and now I have the itch to cut it but it took years (I started at shoulder length). I’m thinking a new cut for the new year. My worst purchases would be pages long. Live and learn. 💕
This is crazy to think about so I am very grateful that you did this video! I am 26 and I am realizing the only good purchase I’ve made since I am 20 is my iPad that I am typing on right now. I am a teacher and it has helped me through so much! I can also lay in bed and watch Netflix on it. I take it when I travel, it goes absolutely everywhere with me! Love love love my iPad and smart keyboard that I got for it! The best ♥️
How does your husband feel about your solo travel? Do you miss him when you travel? Do you feel your experiences are lesser than because he is not there?
Susie Q I did a solo trip to England and my bf of 3 years was so supportive since I have a job I can travel! Of course it’s great to enjoy a new place with someone you love but there’s such a newfound respect I have for myself I never would of known if I didn’t go alone!
So you and I are right about the same age and discovered the beauty community here around the same time. I was so obsessed and watched hours daily. Since then things have changed (of course) and i seldom pull TH-cam but...quarantine baby haha. I just watched 10 of your videos in a row and it was like having a visit with an old friend. I genuinely forgot how much i enjoyed your videos (and a few other OGs). I'm so happy to see you doing so well and find it very funny that without knowing each other, without me continuing to watch regularly, we've grown and changed in some very similar ways. I don't know, I'm feeling mushy and about to continue down the rabbit hole haha but thank you for being you.
My trip to London last month! I come from a large family that rarely travels and have always wanted to go to Europe (expensive country). Me and my sister are constantly browsing the internet, looking at tickets and Airbnb prices, trying to convince our family to come along as they’d never let us go alone. Then one day in September my sister was online and found cheap tickets to London ($400 round trip). After researching more about London (the hotels, weather, who’d come with us) our trip was booked! Since money was a bit tight, I paid for the entire trip knowing that my mom and sister would eventually pay me back. It was a great investment because the experience I had was priceless! I’ve never had so much fun and seen so much beautiful and historical landmarks. This inspired me to just go and travel; stop thinking of excuses and book that trip!
I really enjoy watching your videos ever since the first one I watched of your visit to Savannah, GA. My wife and I were planning a first-time trip there about a year ago, so I watched some TH-cam videos as preparation. Your video was most helpful. In watching this one just now, I couldn't help but laugh that you sat on the floor in this presentation, rather than on your $4,000 sofa. ;-)
please do a video on how you go solo traveling while married! what does your husband think, does he chip in for finances for your travels, how long are you gone for, etc. i would love to travel but i'm married and he never wants to go on trips just that once a year trip with his family which is NOT how i want to experience other cultures.
We purchased a cheap couch in our 20s and it is falling apart. You've inspired me to consider investing in a decent couch! Travel is so important to us too. I'd prefer to be seeing the world than spending money on random stuff.
I've been a subscriber for years. I enjoyed your beauty guru content but this channel has been so inspiring lately as you've transitioned into talking about solo travel. Especially in the last few months, I feel like your videos have really helped me think about what's significant to me and what I want to focus on as I get closer to 30. It's easy to set goals to live more fearlessly and to act with intention but more difficult to put those goals into practice. Hearing you talk so openly really does help and make it all seem less intimidating. :)
My hiking boots, these were the first motivation to get me out of my comfortzone. I suffer with a chronic illness, I've always believed I couldn't do much. But with these shoes, I've noticed they give me enough strenght to do things. Since then, my number one partners in crime since 2011.
I'm grateful for this video because it got me out of my negative thinking about money. Thank you for such awesome content. The 2 best purchases I made in my 20's include my car (I paid cash and still drive it) and my college degree. I didn't have a clue about all the opportunities that would open up to me as a result of going to college and I'm super thankful about being able to pursue a new career path.
Absolutely loved this video. You are so honest and genuine. I know exactly the feeling you had when you booked your plane ticket to Iceland, I had the exact feeling after I booked my trip to Austria(amazing by the way)
I’m now at the tail end of my 20s and what I wanted to do was start travelling. I had a week in Paris and a week in Amsterdam booked and thinking about pricing up time in India next year... all locked and ready to go until coronavirus happened
How does your husband feel about you doing solo trips? I asked my boyfriend how he would feel about me doing it and he wasn’t really supportive. He didn’t understand why I would go without him. We’ve been dating for 6 years.
Just Bobbi i feel that time away from a SO can be really good for your relationship, that feeling of missing them can remind you why you love them so much. travelling solo is also a really good way to find out what YOU enjoy while travelling and pushes you to speak to strangers (in other languages and to make friends) maybe suggest one solo trip and one couples trip? that way there’s a balance
I have not solo traveled yet but my spouse knows that it’s something I want to do and we support each other in everything. I have more vacation time than him and I can’t always find someone to go with. Most of our family doesn’t understand but he knows that if we don’t support each other than we will begin to resent each other.
I did my first solo trip last November (2018) to Berlin. My boyfriend of four years really didn’t want me to go. I’m quite a small woman, and I look very young, so he’s always stressed about my wellbeing. Although I understood his concerns, I ended up buying the tickets anyway. I made sure to include him in the planning process so he could see I was doing everything I could to stay safe. It ended up being a wonderful experience for me, and now he’s happy to let me travel solo. Obviously it’s different for every couple, but do your best to get to the root of why he’s concerned, and address it. Solo travel doesn’t mean you never want to travel with him ever! And if you really really want to do it, just go.
I wouldn’t do international travel without my husband. I do smaller state-side trips, but my husband loves to travel just as much as I do! He just doesn’t get as much vacation time as I do. As for the larger trips, I would want to share those experiences with him! Some of our best memories have been made traveling together!
My corgi. He's my best friend. I never had a dog. Then I became obsessed with corgis. I searched for months for my fantasy dog. I kept finding corgis that were tricolor not red and white like I wanted. Finally found him for sale on Facebook. He's my perfect dog.
Really interesting to watch. Love your shorter hair-- it suits you! I think most of my purchases of material things weren't really important at all. It's the travel experiences that meant the most! Except for my REI raincoat that I bought before traveling Europe. It had an interior pocket where I could put my wallet and keep it safe. I'm now in my 30s and have a family, so I'm glad I had all those adventures when I was younger and it was easier to travel!
I subscribed to your channel first when I found youtube, watching your videos today, I have the feeling that I could watch only your videos and I'd happy and satisfied. Thank you for your hard work and energy!♥️ hugs from Hungary 🇭🇺
I really love that you mentioned your hair cut as being one of your best purchases. I used to be obsessed with the idea of long hair and I thought it would make me so much prettier and long hair is sexier than short hair. and now that i'm 24 I cut 5 inches off and I LOVE my hair so much more with a healthy cut. A good cut can really bring so much confidence!
I used to watch your videos back in 2012 when I just began highschool (Amarixe!!!) and I haven’t watched you in quite a while! I think you might have taken a break. Anyway, I graduate uni this year and it’s such a cool feeling watching you again and realizing how much we’ve both grown!!
My trip to Iceland was by far the bests purchase and experience of my life. I could tell by the way you spoke about it that it was one of your bests too. 👍🏼💕 (and my boots to keep my feet warm and dry were another ‘best’ purchase lol!!)
She has a few already on why solo travel is great and why it can be difficult, and talks about how she takes photos in those. She also mentions using local photographers in her Dubai video.
I love the your couch too. And, Ellie as well.Glad you don't buy cheap. Save up and buy better. Solo travel is the best. You will meet more interesting people and find more adventures.
Definitely my education. I paid for a masters degree and Arabic programs. I got to spend last summer studying in the Middle East and it was incredible.
buying a pair of ultra boosts (on sale of course) i spend all day on my feet and investing in shoes that support my feet was a great purchase! Another great purchase was my first metal water bottle it was a kickstart into producing less waste and making more sustainable choices! plus it made me drink more water since it was always cold
For expensive purchases, you should consider driving up a couple hours to Vancouver from Seattle! I have cousins in Seattle and when they come to visit me across here, they also make their expensive purchases in Canada because the dollar is at an advantage for you all :)
A new mattress!! After old childhood mattresses, college dorm "mattresses", and using my brother's old college mattress in my first apartment...yeah, my back was angry. After constantly have back aches/spasms and neck problems (also invested in a pillow!), I dropped $1k-ish on a mattress and have ZERO regrets!
We bought a similar couch (used!) from PB 8 years ago and it’s going strong!! We have it in our basement now and want to recover it, but the cushions and pillows are still in perfect condition. Great buy! We bought a couch 3 years ago from a large local chain and it’s awful, the fabric looks awful and has so much wear.
My best purchase was a rebuilt Nissan Altima. I got it for super cheap, barely any miles, and it’s brand new in perfect condition. I bought it from a guy who gets cars off of auctions and fixes them, he’s super picky, trustworthy, and does an amazing job. So basically I got an extremely good deal out of it and will have this car for years. It’s been a year since I bought it, no problems whatsoever. A lot people stay away from rebuilt titles because it’s risky, but I think it was way worth it.
Okay, so, Safe Haven is one of my favorite movies, and I have the same reaction to Julianne Hough's haircut in that movie every time I watch it. I haven't don't it yet, but I know it's going to happen at some point.
So far I would say my computer, my used car (my first car that I purchased myself after years of not having one!) and a trip 2 years ago to Italy/the Netherlands with my friend during my last year of college. On the horizon, I am hoping to purchase a home with my partner and go on more trips (I haven’t been out of the country or on a really vacation since the trip during my last year of college), especially ones out of the country, before my 20s are over. Love that you are solo traveling, that’s so inspirational for me! EDIT: I would also say that purchasing concert tickets, especially going to a concert by myself for the first time, have been among some of my greatest purchases. :) and tattoos that I have purchased for myself because they have made me feel more comfortable and beautiful in my body.
I live in Canada, my North Face parka was just north of $600 as well, it’s hands down the most expensive clothing item I own, but the most useful and practical. While I didn’t but my MacBook (it was a gift) I have had it since I was 18, I’m 26 now and it’s still going strong. Some things are worth the money.
I found your channel, lucky me, and have binged all of them, I just think you are such a great utuber, I adore your channel... xo Fellow minimalist here, but I relate to so much of what you speak of, actually I have naturally curly hair, I have fought it all my life since my teens, blow drying, flat ironing, well during the pandemic, I decided to go with my natural curl, and it has been liberating, and for the first time, I feel like the real me, so your right about cutting your hair, I feel same way
I can relate so much with booking a solo trip. I did it for a big Latinamerican forum and I was so nervous searching hotels and being far away but it felt incredible.
When you said that buying that plane ticket to Iceland was one of the best purchases of your life, it got me kind of emotional. I traveled before with my family but I want to visit some places that my family and friends don’t want to go, or our days off don’t match or they don’t have the money. But I’m so afraid to go by myself and to feel lonely or afraid something will happen to me because I’m not also alone, but because I’m a woman as well. With all of this in my head, I also think that if I do travel alone, I will feel more independent and more mature. Oh, choices. 🤦🏻♀️
Wow you are such a brave soul!! I went to an airflight back home by myself and it was exciting yet nerve wrecking! I know now I can do it, but I rather have company next time I do. I would love to go with my boyfriend to New Orleans or New York or Ireland. He loves traveling, so he is my perfect pick to have some loving company. I hope you have a blessed week ahead and thank you for sharing all your experiences. (:
Love this! This really has me thinking about what mine have been. There are definitely a few plane tickets on that list too! Also, after your "5 Things I'm Loving This Fall" video, I found some kodiak boots at your recommendation ($25 on poshmark, heyy) and I can definitely say they are one of the best purchases I've made this year!!
my kitchen aid mixer. sounds wierd, but I really bake so much and I was always kinda thinking I had to wait till i was making a steady income or had my own house, but then I thought "but wait, I bake now and I am going through all those crappy cheap mixers and what if I wont bake anymore in a few years because life changes? I dont want to which I had this thing everytime I am baking". my mom is using it too and we both love it and it made my baking so much easier and better. and it had like a 10 year warranty and it is a high quality product
I have a Dries Van Noten Coat, bought at Barney's. It's technically a Fall Coat. But I wore it just this week in New York during the Christmas lead up. It's a 3K coat. But I bought it when I was gainfully employed during the worst days of the Great Recession. And it was just 300 bucks. I've had it 10 years, expect to have it at least 20 more...or until it gets eaten up by moths. It is super warm and luxurious. And it cuts a flattering silhouette that makes people see me. I'm a true believer in buying high quality at steep discounts. I keep just about everything that I love forever.
My best purchase would be my couch, my vaccume and my ticket home. My worst purchase would probably be my bachelor degree. My advisor screwed up 4 times which ended up adding on 2 year of time and I ended up with a different degree because my department got closed.
Mine would be the plane ticket to China to study abroad in Shanghai (which after financial aid was the only thing I had to pay out of pocket for that trip). I studied there from August to January 2020. The coronavirus hit the minute I got home, so I’m unbelievably lucky to have spent the months before quarantine seeing so much of the world (And no, I didn’t catch it and bring it back here, I had multiple checkups since getting back).
What are some of the best purchases you've made?
my electric car.... its efficient and ecofriendly
Patagonia 40L deep plum black hole bag, it's so nice!

In watching this one just now, I couldn't help but laugh that you sat on the floor in this presentation, rather than on your $4,000 sofa. ;-)
Wowwww I was shook at the Patagonia jacket price
please do a video on how you go solo traveling while married! what does your husband think, does he chip in for finances for your travels, how long are you gone for, etc. i would love to travel but i'm married and he never wants to go on trips just that once a year trip with his family which is NOT how i want to experience other cultures.
We have the same PB sectional. I have had mine for 11 years now and it still looks amazing. Got mine at the PB outlet for $850, still loving it!!
Your channel has become my new fave
I’ve discovered your channel yesterday and I’m being watching you nonstop ❤️
Just Bobbi i feel that time away from a SO can be really good for your relationship, that feeling of missing them can remind you why you love them so much. travelling solo is also a really good way to find out what YOU enjoy while travelling and pushes you to speak to strangers (in other languages and to make friends)
maybe suggest one solo trip and one couples trip? that way there’s a balance
I’ve really been enjoying your content! I’d love to see you try an capsule wardrobe video
My trips to Europe and the US have been my best purchases ;) spending money on travelling is never money wasted ;)
My best purchase is a North Face Women's Outer Boroughs Parka. It's so warm and perfect for the New England winters.
You’re an excellent storyteller. Lovely video.
Okay, I 💯 heard “puppy” when you said the coat comes w a “puffy” liner. A coat that comes with a puppy... now that is something I can get behind! 🤣
My trip to Iceland was by far the bests purchase and experience of my life. I could tell by the way you spoke about it that it was one of your bests too. 👍🏼💕 (and my boots to keep my feet warm and dry were another ‘best’ purchase lol!!)
Agreed! I don't regret any of the purchases I made regarding traveling because those are the best experiences :)
I bought 3 hours ago a ticket for my first solo travel to New York. And i am having the same feeling =)))
Can you do a video on solo travel, how you take photos on your own, difficulties and things please
She has a few already on why solo travel is great and why it can be difficult, and talks about how she takes photos in those. She also mentions using local photographers in her Dubai video.
Very nice 😊. Any purchase done with our own finances without depending on parents or anybody else is always special
I love the your couch too. And, Ellie as well.Glad you don't buy cheap. Save up and buy better. Solo travel is the best. You will meet more interesting people and find more adventures.
I remember you were one of the OG's. Thanks for the relatable video!
Love the couch! In the long run 4grand is not bad
For expensive purchases, you should consider driving up a couple hours to Vancouver from Seattle! I have cousins in Seattle and when they come to visit me across here, they also make their expensive purchases in Canada because the dollar is at an advantage for you all :)
That cat in the background made my frickin day 😂 that was hillarious ❤️
A new mattress!! After old childhood mattresses, college dorm "mattresses", and using my brother's old college mattress in my first apartment...yeah, my back was angry. After constantly have back aches/spasms and neck problems (also invested in a pillow!), I dropped $1k-ish on a mattress and have ZERO regrets!
Loved hearing you mention Iceland! I’m going this summer and that made me so much more excited!
HOLY, Allison! You have beautiful story telling abilities
EDIT:
I would also say that purchasing concert tickets, especially going to a concert by myself for the first time, have been among some of my greatest purchases.
I love your stories and videos!! ❤️❤️❤️
you are truely inspriring allison
As someone who lives in Montana, girl, you need yourself a winter coat. My coat is also one of my best investments.
I found your channel, lucky me, and have binged all of them, I just think you are such a great utuber, I adore your channel... xo
Fellow minimalist here, but I relate to so much of what you speak of, actually I have naturally curly hair, I have fought it all my life since my teens, blow drying, flat ironing, well during the pandemic, I decided to go with my natural curl, and it has been liberating, and for the first time, I feel like the real me, so your right about cutting your hair, I feel same way
Telling yourself something won’t work out before you’ve tried.... shit, you got me
I really enjoyed this video, especially the stories/memories associated with the purchases!
My best 'purchase' was investing in my ortho degree over all the personal stuff and relationships.
I almost shed a tear omg. Cut inches off my hair hours ago. Loving it so far.
Tempurpedic mattress, Canada Goose jacket, mac makeup brushes and solo travel :)
I bought a good couch in my twenties. I just sold it almost 30 years later. Amazing purchase
I loved this video! It always amazes me how hindsight is 20/20. Everything happens for a reason :)
You are so well spoken! Love this video
Omg my ultimate hairstyle was informed by Julianne Hough in Footloose 😂
Choices and decisions are always going back and forth in my head this way as well. It's so hard for me to make decisions!
I found your channel recently and I really admire you! You seem like you have such a good head on your shoulders!! I love your hair length btw.
My best purchase is my Dyson V11: one toddler and 3 cats😬 Best purchase ever!!!
Your videos are always so inspiring! Your cat is a crack-up! I loved her bird cackling.😂
Some of my best purchases have been music festival passes. I love music and traveling, so they’re such a special investment I’ve made.
One of my best purchases was my hair clippers! Been cutting my own hair for the past 5 years and have saved so much money!
That is such an interesting idea! How did you learn how to cut your own hair?
@@PeteWentzPlease72 I watched a TH-cam video on it! Then a lot of trial and error haha
Thank you Allison.i learned a lot from your channel
