Pokémon is such a crazy IP. I just re-entered the TCG collecting/investing hobby recently after years of opening packs as a kid and loving Pokémon for a very long time. It’s really interesting to see Justin Basil hating on 151 not necessarily hating, but being surprised and so in shock That people are excited for the blooming waters. This just really interests me considering the last few months of my reentry into the hobby. Lots of my information has come from TH-camrs big and small Reddit Twitter. You name it and in terms of people investing in collecting everyone loves 151 reprint or not this product is hype and people love it and now watching this podcast for the first time with Justin Basil a TCG player and seeing his side of things and not even understanding that 80% of the community are absolutely obsessed with this set
I get collectors and "investors" wanting to pick these products up for a sealed collection. It's just very hard for me to understand why anyone would be chomping at the bit to open packs from a set that's been so widely opened and out for so long (and not even old enough to not be Standard legal anymore!) At this point, I can't understand why you wouldn't just buy the cards you actually want.
@@JustInBasil idk man there is just something about pulling your chase card from a condom pack. I have been on and on buying pokemon tcg for most of my life and recently got back in to it heavy. As someone who has never truly played the tcg game itself and only likes cards as collectors pieces. It’s just very cool to see two completely opposite sides of the same IP.
Jon you called it, Justin just has a disconnect when it comes to collectors. It’s oil and water trying to get him to understand. 151 will be one if not the top set of scarlet and violet. Also the big three SIRs are going for $200/$100/$90 respectively, yes ppl want more packs. It’s that simple. (27 min mark)
I get the love for 151. What I don't get is this intense need to spend thousands of dollars to continually fail to get the cards you actually want from a set that has been out for a year and a half and has singles that are readily accessible and affordable. Cracking open modern packs makes *much* more sense for sets when they are new, but it's a real head-scratcher for modern sets that aren't and 151 isn't. I get that for "investors" and sealed product collectors, products like this one are must-gets, but buying sealed products for card collectors in cases like these feels like just chucking $100 bills into a paper shredder.
@@JustInBasil see my good sir you are using logic, and not everyone has it lol think of it this way gambling is one of the top business models, and why? statically the house usually wins but ppl keep playing. Pokémon is not far removed from this logic, it’s the rush. I’m not defending it, I actually buy singles myself unless I am doing a master set. My point more is that you just can’t understand why someone would do it, the answer is just sometimes simply “they just will”.
Not all the 151 singles are cheap. The starter full arts come to mind. But definitely a lot of them. I think the 151 also had good marketing and an easy to understand name
OMG!! MASSIVE DISCONNECT! Love ya but... 151 is bigger in its market appeal than any other set to ever be made. More demand than any other set to EVER come out!
I love zygarde. I hadn't liked the legends much for many years till x and y. I loved the fairy one and zygarde. Specifically zygarde in the dog form. ABSOLUTELY love it as a dog but still love the snake version. The complete form is nice but I wish they would push the snake form more. I feel like I haven't seen the snake form in a LONG TIME! They were so secretive about the 100% form and I kind of liked it better that way. Have it be 70% promo of zygarde in snake form, 15% dog form, 10% the cell form, and 5% the 100% form. Make it more special. I now kind of think of the snake form as a kind of middle evolution instead of being like xernious and yveltal power level. I would love if in za they get mega like forms(more like oras legendary mega type things) and then those match zygarde 100% form. Then maybe expand zygardes level more than that with something like a mega or have more cells or something. Something to make it bigger.
I think for the upset players, people do not internalize criticism and feel the world needs to mold to them. Which is good on one hand to stand up for yourself, however, if you are not going at it for equality and instead of give yourself the edge over others, you are probably in the wrong. Also it's just a game at the end of the day. You should be enjoying first. If these types of upsets are too much, you might want to find a different tournament or game that plays more for your style. Or even start your own.
Saying 151 singles are cheap is wild. Charizard going for 300 plus, psa10 prices are skyrocketing. I understand that it’s a waste of money I totally agree but the average collector or parent of a kid who wants it is going to pay 40 bucks for a box not 300 for one card. Most collectors budget is maybe 100 a month. Also to a real collector pulling it, grading it, whatever, feels much better to do yourself than just buy someone else’s
I don't think Beckett has very many graders, especially for Pokemon. They aren't close to the same scale as PSA and black labels give the impression of being pay-to-play. Zygarde.
Yeah. Maybe I'm just too unwilling to spend money on a set that's been out for a year and a half. At this point, anything I don't have I can just get as singles for next to nothing. Opening packs for an in-print, still Standard-legal set that's been out this long feels like tossing $100 bills in the paper shredder.
@JustInBasil you are fine, sv singles are cheap, there is a difference between collectors and investors and only investors will want sealed product like this
@@JustInBasil The only people interested in that product are investors or people who specifically collect 1 of each product. Actual collectors of cards would just get singles, it's just a much cheaper alternative.
I think 151 is overrated personally even tho gen 1 is goat. For some reason it just isn’t a great set to me. I totally get why people like it and are hyped for the blooming waters collection. I’m a collector and I would never buy a single card. It’s all about the rng of opening packs for me.
another fun show! love you both! Keep it up!
Flareon fan right here!!
Grading in general is a scam honestly, the only reason it should exist is for verification. Zygarde aye?

PSA will forever be king. All companies have had a scandal here and there , but if you go to any card show they’ll tell you the same. PSA sells

first time seeing basil and seems like a real gem. clearly he is out of touch with collectors.
