I'm a collector and not a player and I love this trainer selection. I'm not the biggest fan of Iono, but the cards look awesome, same for the others. As a collector I'm really enjoying this so far.
I think people forget that it's first of all a GAME. This set introduces playable cards and if collectors don't like it I think actual players will love being able to get cards that aren't severely overpriced because of scalpers
It sounds like you actually don’t know anything about the tcg industry. Pokemon knows that the vast majority of people who buy their products only collect and don’t play so making a set for players and not collectors is not profitable for them. Also when have cards for decks been expensive in the modern era? Every card has a cheap version so nothing is being gatekeeped by price
Couldn’t agree more with you, Jon! I was hoping for more trainers in this set. I get their strategy for game play but when it was announced that owner’s Pokémon were coming back I got super excited. I wish every card was an owner’s Pokemon too because then I’d want to master the set as these types of cards are some of my favorites. On another note, I wish Justin wouldn’t have interrupted you every time you spoke. I wanted to hear what you had to say and every time you spoke he talked over you. Don’t know much about him but he comes across as a smart ass and honestly I was impressed with how you handled his antics during this. I would have cut his feed as he showed you zero respect and undermined everything you said. Thanks for all the news! I check your site daily.
Our discussion was quite lively, and we tend to get excited to the point where we cut each other off all the time--see him cutting me off just last week during the discussion about Expanded. We know each other so well these days that it's just how we talk to one another in lively discussions like this one: it's just one bit of excitement building on another. We absolutely respect one another (and trust one another) to a very high degree. It's why we've worked together the last five years and why we started a podcast together! We can disagree with one another (and we sometimes do, to a very strong degree--as with the Expanded story last week and our opinions about Battle Partners so far this week). Our disagreements are just that, disagreements, not undermining!
Seeing a supporter for Brock is a good sign since if we get more gen 1 gym leaders maybe we will finally get a full art Lt. Surge Support to complete the full art Gen 1 gym leader set
From what Ive seen so far the set looks great. The abilities are sick, and look like theyre really playing into the changes Bedew will do competitively. Hops dubwool being boss's orders, other pokemon with decent abilities meaning Frosslass will become relavent coming up. Im still excited because this set is nowhere near done, and is only part of what will be in Journey Together.
I actually am pretty concerned about how the Trainer's Pokémon will impact GLC. On the positive side, they're doing their typical Creatures design where they give excessive love to multiprizers... but on the flip side, the multiprizer isn't the only strong part of the deck, like you've mentioned with Hop. It makes me wonder what other trainers will come in like a wrecking ball to the format.
Being. 90s baby and being there when the first set was released I am really looking to more trainer and pokemon cards for my collection I even pre ordered two 👍

Yes! Battle Partners becomes part of our international set Journey Together, which will be the first main set of the year. This should have all the usual set stuff--ETBs, booster boxes, etc.
I enjoy the set so far, but I will say I think a lot of people were looking for a little more cohesiveness or a little more set identity , makes me wonder if Rocket will have some type of rag tag group of bad guys
This I get. Pokémon hasn't been too big on set identity in a while, with the rare exception of things like 151, Pokémon GO, and Celebrations. We used to have sets in the Sun & Moon era that focused on specific regions, for example. More of that would be pretty awesome.
Really don’t understand why we have not had sets that were only trainers owned Pokemon or all rockets since the Wizards of the Coast era, it’s just very disappointing that TPCI can’t just commit to the theme of the set. Having the whole set be trainer owned would have just let them include more trainers 🤦🏻♂️
I'd have loved for the whole set to be all Trainer's Pokémon, too, but see how they've treated recent gimmick tags (the battle styles, paradox Pokémon) felt like a warning to me that we wouldn't get all Trainer's Pokémon in these sets. Like, I was pretty sure I would be right when I said what I did last week, but I also hoped I'd be wrong.
I'm really disappointed. Four trainers that I don't care for, lame arts so far. I think a lot of people are going to lay off this set since it's following two really hot ones in Surging Sparks and Prismatic Evolutions

Them not going all in on the concept is disappointing to me.
Hop is actually just busted in GLC.
Hop Colorless can have a snorlax hitting for 200 on turn one going second.

Steven's Metagross and Marnie's Grimmsnarl. Cynthia's Garchomp is supposed to be in the next Japanese set, Heat Wave Arena.
