    I’m enjoying these lives, especially the interviews.
    I’m a left-handed writer. Fortunately, I’ve been an underhanded writer for probably 30 years (college).
    My only gold nib is a Pilot Falcon and I love it! I’m about a year into fountain pens, and it was my 50th birthday present. Love that we’re similar in age. GenX represent!

    Atlas is one of my favorite retailers. I try to spread it around to all of them just to make it fair. Most of them are very good. Atlas is one of them that are a cut above though, they really do little extra things to make it personal to the customers. Goulet is the same way. Both places give little hand written notes or cards that make it more special. It's awesome!!

    I am a lefty fountain pen user. Over the years of writing I have wanted to change my grip but can’t seem to shake it. I write with an over hook, and the only pen I have had issues with is my Lamy dialog F with catching the paper. My Lamy 2000 M and my Homosapiens F never had issues writing. What I do is just get a high grit sandpaper like #5000 or higher. Then I write with it lightly in the position I write in, and it fixes it. My dialog is the only one I have had issues with. I still want to still change my hand position still. I really enjoy the videos the two of you put out! Keep ‘em up guys!

    About 'blueblack' and those colored inks.
    Let me confess that, like you, I don't know how blueblack ink came to be. But I think it might have a more natural and original background (than mixing inks).
    First as iron gall inks. These become blacker on the paper after a while. If they're strong they'll eventually become completely black (and then, sometimes, more red-brown as centuries pass). Traditionally, like Platinum Blueblack or Rohrer & Klingner Salix, these inks were colored blue with a dye, because pure, refined, unoxidized iron gall ink for fountain pens, is pretty colorless by itself before oxidizing, and the blue dye helps during the writing.
    So that's one reason why 'blueblack' might have a more deliberate background.
    Another reason is very related. It too is about permanence.
    These days, a lot of those prolific, popular, colored inks are very fugitive. - Poof! ...and it's gone.
    But in earlier days, ink manufacturers took a responsibility for permanence more seriously. The durability of the traditional office/working inks was still considered important.
    So I'm suggesting that the availability of a very lightfast dye, that happened to be not so brightly blue, but more blueblack, made its way into these inks.

      @HemingwayJones  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a good theory. Much more technical than mine. Love it. Thank you!

    • @differentkindofGEKE
      @differentkindofGEKE ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe it’s the iron gall history, which I also believe is why black and blue are required on some forms/paperwork; iron gall is waterproof/water resistant. Historical from earlier ink formulation. I can’t remember if this came from the Goulet Pencast or some random internet search.

    • @Vermiliontea
      @Vermiliontea ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@differentkindofGEKE Yes.
      The full story though, is not that it's just water proof, but also fade proof and erosion proof. This makes it a required ink for some special purposes - historical records - even today.
      There are a few modern dye based inks that are very lightfast, so lightfast one might hazard a guess it might last 1000 years if protected from light in a closed book. I'm thinking about Noodler's "Eternal" and "Warden" inks. But there are no guarantees. All organic dye based inks will fade away. It's just a matter of time. And Indian ink and Sumi, which are carbon pigment with binder (can't be used in FPs), may erode/rub away from the surface, even if they never fade.
      Iron Gall inks sink into the paper or leather fibers and deposit iron oxide.
      I assume the specific legal requirement, where it exists, for black ink (and possibly blueblack?) is due to that photo copying methods offer the possibility to filter away colored inks. I think that old copiers would do this as a normal way of functioning. They "see" blue as the same as white.

      @HemingwayJones  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@differentkindofGEKE Great info! Thank you! Also, J Herbin invented an Iron Gall ink, I don’t know if it was the first, but it was in the late 18th C. It was waterproof because it was designed to be used aboard ships. It oxidizes over time to a rusty brownish color (and some other hues) depending on the formula. Certainly the iron degrades… beautifully!

    • @HemingwayJones

      Hello, I think it would depend on the metal. I don’t aluminum would have an issue. I imagine they would question the Brass because it looks like something suspicious. Then give them your autograph and it should be fine. I would think.
