Rhetorical question: When everyone is wearing a different uniform, is it really a uniform? Real question: Why are the shoulder flags affixed at such a steep angle--wouldn't you want them to be approximately level when worn?
I retired in 2010 and there was talk of females being on subs. To my knowledge, at that time, it hadn’t been implemented. Curious to know how many subs have them and what percentage of the crew are female and what kind of issues there were or still are with mixed crews.

US needs a few modern diesel submarines w IAP. At a cost of over 5 billion for 1 virgina class you could very easily have 10 diesels as a secondary coastal attack. Israel has them tipped w nukes on harpoons too as a supplement doomsday if need be. 212a or 214 to models to name a few.
On paper that makes some sense, as long as they are based in overseas ports. Diesel submarines do not have the ability to deploy like nuclear submarines do. Then there’s the politics. The USN is probably concerned that future Congresses won’t authorize nuclear submarines ever again.
They don't have the endurance for being on station in a distant/expeditionary AO. Not to mention the speed underwater. They have to snorkel to compromise the speed and stealth. Nuke subs don't have that problem. That's why Oz chose nuke, because their AO is in SCS, but their base is at Perth. If they're using SSK-AIP, the time on the station is just a couple of weeks. Pretty useless for 80% OpTempo for the whole flotilla.
@ericvonp Diesel electric submarines are probably not suitable for a blue water navy like the US, but for somewhere like Sweden where they have a very rocky coastline with numerous small islands and inlets they are ideal to protect coastal waters, alongside small, fast patrol boats.
I wonder how the psych assessment goes for submariners?Are they a different set of mentalities or representative? Attracting quality people is a challenge for any service,retaining them harder still.200 MTRS below surface in a steel tube,months on end,god knows where apart from the officers.Listening for ghosts ,not everyone can handle this
