It is a joy to see a young couple live smaller instead of bigger. And your home is lovely.

I am 74 years old and always lived in small-ish houses. I learned many of the things you suggest. The biggest thing is to pick up as you go along. Going to the bedroom?
take the pajamas that were laying on the floor. Our mantra about small bathrooms "look before you leave" - leave it nice for the next person. Towels on the floor,
weird smears here and there, pick up all that junk up and put it away. And "look before your leave" also means putting toilet paper on the roll, emptying the little
trash can and give the sink a quick swirl. It only takes seconds

I raised five kids in a 900 square foot home… with one bathroom… well it was less than 900 square feet… we had three bedrooms. I had a room the boys had a room and the girls… what’s funny is my adult kids are still best friends… there families are… my youngest son now has this home and is making it his own….

Our present home is 1800 sq feet-just, not including the full basement. 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, 4 closets in our hallway alone.
Well, it was perfect when our 3 kids were at home.
They’re on their own now, and our house outgrew us!
We’re moving in a month to a 1194 sq ft house, with ONE bedroom closet. Not even a small linen closet.
However, we realized that we filled up these bedrooms when the kids left, because we had the room to do it, basement too.
We got rid of just about everything!
I have great ideas for storage in our new place!
I’m so excited for this challenge! 😁

Thank you for such a positive video! I live in a home that’s 1,043 sq.ft. And we are expecting baby no. 5 next month. The longer I live in my house the more gratitude I feel that I have one. For some I’m sure it’s a tight squeeze, but we have found it works for us so far. We only have closets in the bedrooms and a linen closet, and so I find myself constantly decluttering; but I have just what I need and I’m so happy with it. You are right though, there must definitely be a mindset shift of leaving things better that when we found it, and as I tell my kids, “do things right the first time”. Hanging up the coats and jackets, putting the shoes in the basket, hanging up your towel after the shower have to be done the first time otherwise the house gets littered and cluttered looking by a series of half-done or delayed decisions by the end of the day. Be it ever so humble, there is no place like home❤❤❤

Idk why this is considered small. My family of 3 and a cat live in a spacious flat 770sqft in Europe. What every flat comes with is a storage space first floor, and a bike/ski garage.

Yes, I think it depends largely on what area of the world you live in and whether it’s in a rural or urban area. Lots of factors. It’s definitely not a “tiny home” but would be considered a small home in America. Thanks for watching!

More space doesn't automatically mean more storage space! We moved from a 1100 sf house to a 1400 sf house and lost a lot of storage. In our old house we had a garage (which we parked in, but also stored yard equipment in) and a full (unfinished) basement, and a lot of kitchen cabinets. At our new house we do not have a garage or basement. We have some storage in our attic and a small shed. I had to get rid of a lot, especially kitchen things, when we moved here. I have a little sign I picked up along the way, "Love grows best in little houses". I liked the sentiment, and didn't realize it's a line from a song.
I LOVE the "enter well". My daughter dumps everything in the doorway as soon as we come in from anywhere, especially school. It's something we've worked on but obviously not enough. And she's 15....lol.

    • @yardsalesquad

I would add to zip tie the hose from the washer drain line to the drain pipe. Mine managed to pop out of the drain line because of the vibration from the washer and started draining dirty water in my laundry room, which seeped through the adjacent walls into a hall closet, adjacent 2 bedrooms, saturated the carpet and subfloor, the baseboard trim was damaged and paint was peeling. I had to mop up as much water as I could, then cut pieces of carpet until I got to dry carpet and pad, let everything air dry for a long time. What a mess, because the drain hose was not secured to the drain line in the wall...

Great list! We moved two years ago into bigger house. While I did clean a tiny bit more in my smaller house, it was mainly because we didn’t have central heat and air and we had a pellet stove so it created a massive amount of dust. The dog hair had way less space to hide. I have always been the “enter well’” person. Really if you have less stuff, “enter well”, and put it away as soon as your done there is way less cleaning overall.

Our kids there. Soon there ofter we moved, then about an 18 months after that we moved again. This time across the country from Midwest TX to Maryland near DC. To a 3,400. Sq.ft. house. We felt like we were rattling around in it for a while. Then 10 years later we moved teenagers and our selves to a 1500. Sq ft house in North East Michigan on Lake Huron. And been here sence! I still have too much stuff!! I need to still clear out so much! I so remember fondly those early days back in TX.. Love is grand enjoy each step! It is all good!

Thank you! I have a small cabinet in my kitchen that has an array of appliances, but then I have shelves in my laundry room. I just realized I should put the appliances I use the most in that cabinet & the others in the laundry room. Such a simple but very important step. Hey, and I’m a grandmother. We moved from a 2500 sq foot house to a little over a 1000 square foot house. My problem & my hubby’s problem, we tried to cram the belongings of a 2500 square foot house foot house into a 1000 square foot house. I have decluttered many times, but hubby just does not like to let go. So, I’m always trying to reinvent these spaces. Again thank you & God bless & keep you & your family safe. 😊❤😊🙏See ya soon.
