Restoration Abandoned Rusty Bush Axe

  • Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project. I found this old rusty bush axe at flea market, by the way I never seen before such level of rust on the blade, axe and so on. I made decision to make interesting handle, not standard. Well, let's do this.
Restoration process: I used electrolysis to remove the rust but after approx. 2 hours rust still was on the blade and then I used rust remover liquid and after 40 minutes I got clean axe head. Then I used iron brush to remover dark sport from the blade. After I used file and sandpapers to correct axe head. For handle, I choose an ash tree. Also, I used two components paint and my new impregnation oil for wood. Finally, I made the axe test for you as usual.
    Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

I must congratulate you on this restoration project. It was well done, and your efforts to resharpen and restore this tool to full functionality is a reflection of your immense craftsmanship and skill.
However, I believe that I can give you some more information on what this “bush axe” is and how it’s actually used. Don’t get me wrong, it is meant to cut wood, but it’s design is actually for a more specific job than just cutting logs and branches placed on a stump. You see, it’s been many years since I’ve worked with one of these axes, but I was taught a bit of information about them by my grandfather in the Philippines when we were clearing out a small wooded field together. So I can say with complete certainty that this axe is actually a type of asian forestry axe used to delimb cut down trees. That was my job during that field clearing, I had to delimb all of the fallen trees with this type of axe so we could then tie them to the leather harness of the farm caribou and drag the now smooth tree trunks back home to turn into firewood.
It’s been so long ago that I’ve forgotten the name, but I do know this is a fairly common traditional forestry axe design in many asian countries. The design is popular because this type of axe head can be made cheaply and quickly just by forge welding together a piece of cut off iron pipe (this is what forms the eye of the axe) and the metal section that will form the blade of the axe. Also, this type of axe usually has a longer handle, as the user is supposed to remain upright or slightly as they delimb the fallen tree. I’m not surprised that it’s such an uncommon design now though, as most people don’t cut down trees and have to delimb them.
What kind of shocks me is that the axe you restored in this video is so large. The one I used as a boy was small, but it’s handle was quite long, so I was easily able to use leverage with both my arms and quickly delimb the trees even at 12 years old because it was relatively light and I could swing it very quickly. The irregularly large size and unclean welds on this axe makes me think that it was a quickly made axe just to be used as a cross between a billhook machete and an traditional axe.

Amazy save. Most would have given up, but you saw something in that piece of rusted steel and brought it out. The pitting just gives it more character. It has a lot more life to give. You saved it's life and I give you great applause for that. Bravo, my friend.
