- In this new video series, we want to show you and introduce you to several originals in detail, one after the other, because there is nothing better than references for model builders.
Today we show you interior and exterior views of the late version Tiger I in the exceptional condition as it was disassembled for restoration!
Today we show you interior and exterior views of the legendary Tiger I Ausf. E late version tank (serial number 251114)
This tiger has a very interesting history, it was built in 1944 in Kassel by Henschel, then came to the schw. Pz.SS. dept. 102 (unfortunately Christian made a mistake with the 101st!) and fought in Normandy with turret number 114.
The Tiger was captured near the town of Cauville by the British Army, the Tiger was then handed over to the Free French Army and was used to liberate France until the end of the war. In fact, the tiger was captured with the transport tracks and was also driven like this when deployed.
After the war, the Tiger was deployed with a few Panthers in the 6th Regiment de Cuirassier Squdron Besnier in occupied Treve/Germany until 1960.
After the regiment left Treve for Indochina in 1960, the tank came to AMX in Satory, where it was handed over to what is now the Tank Museum in 1965.
The "bulge" on the front stems from a collision with another Tiger in the regiment.
In the years 2003-2004 the Tiger could be seen in the tank museum in Munster where it received partly new Zimmerit and the current paintjob.
At the time of 2023, the Tiger is being completely disassembled, restored and is to be brought back into a working condition.
Here is some key data for the Tiger:
A total of 1350 examples were built between 1942 and 1944, and the Tiger was used on all fronts of the war. That is, from the blazing sun of North Africa to the cold Russian steppe.
Many changes were made during production, distinguishing between early, mid and, as shown here, a late variant.
With a crew of 5, the powerful and very effective 8.8cm KwK L/56, it soon gained a good reputation. The Achilles' heel was the vulnerable engine which, with just under 650 hp (later up to 700 hp) for the 57 tons, was far too weak (power-to-weight ratio 12.3 hp/t).
In addition, the Tiger was very thirsty in terms of fuel consumption, bad for a country without sufficient petrol supplies.
Please keep in mind that we unfortunately only received most of the information AFTER the shoot, thank you very much.
We are pleased that the tank museum in Saumur made this shoot possible for us, especially for these unusual insights.

Excellent tour of the Saumur Tiger 1, glad to hear that the museum is trying to restore it to running condition.
According to French media citing the Musée des Blindés de Saumur, this Tiger 1 tank was built in April 1944.
It participated in the Battle of Normandy and is said to have been immobilized by a collision with another German vehicle in the Falaise pocket on August 20, 1944. The tank was then abandoned and the crew taken prisoner.
Ironically, the French Forces of the Interior (FFI) restored it and used it 6 months later against the Saint-Nazaire pocket (one of the Atlantic pockets still occupied by the Germans).
Subsequently, the tank was integrated into the French army, sent to occupy Germany and then studied from every angle.
The tank has been in the museum's collections since 1968 and on display since 1971.

It always amazes me how quickly Germany developed armor technology while the rest of us had to play catch up. Most don’t realize that making armor plate steel requires a secret recipe of various alloys mixed into the steel then heat treated to further harden the armor plating. 85 years on and we still haven’t gotten the exact process down to replicate what Krupp made.
Doesn't matter - the writing was on the wall for steel armour as soon as hollow charge anti tank weapons entered service . German tanks were notorious for over-design and over-engineering . The Russians and Americans got it right . As did the British, eventually.
"Catchup" what a complete lie
You're wrong, the USSR had better tanks. Germany correctly understood the need for a radio in every machine. The commander then had the ability to contact the artillery, infantry command and air force. The strength of the German Army was in its quick cooperation and seamless adjustment of plans. The USSR had an immediate problem when there was some forced change of plan, they operated on the liaison people who delivered the messages. When the liaison fell in combat, there was a big mismatch. It was only during the war that USSR tanks started to be equipped with radios en masse. The other big problem with the USSR tanks was the absolute newcomers, the Germans were veterans from Poland and France, the Balkans. If the Germans had Kv1 and T34, they would have defeated the USSR in 1942. Another meme is the inaccuracy of the USSR weapons - the Su-152 is known to have had exactly the same accuracy as the Tyger. The German 100% accuracy was when it always hit a 2.5x2m target somewhere. And such a target would have been hit very easily by a USSR tank as well. The only problem was the USSR crew who were not soldiers yesterday.

I don’t know if you’re aware of the various alloys and the Rockwell C scale hardness measurement system that’s use to determine if steel will withstand various impacts. Shape charge development negated a lot of armor technology and even today tank designers have a difficult time planning defenses or defense systems to defeat shape charges. Every tank designer aims for the best armor with the lightest weight and the Czechs made good vehicles and light tanks but the armor was very brittle which is a sign of hardening but the plating is too thin, it needs mass to allow for a slight amount of flexing to defeat penetrator munitions or squash head impacts. Today the appliqué armor system can defeat SABO penetrators but we’re at the limit for the M1 and future munitions will be developed that can penetrate the thickest and most protected sections of the tank. As an Infantryman I was assigned to a Mechanized unit twice and whenever we halted on a road, we always angled our vehicles 45 degrees to one side or another in a herringbone fashion to improve our odds of defense from impacts but in an M-113 even that was a comedic gesture at best since our hulls were aluminum and only designed to protect from large bore rifle fire. My job as a Tank Destroyer (MOS 11H) meant we were constantly studying potential enemy armor advances and where to aim for a complete or, mobility kill. For Soviet tanks they’re easy to kill with the TOW missile by aiming at the turret ring because the tanks only use a single lip retention to secure the turret to the hull so once hit it would easily pop off and allow a penetration, this is why you see the turret fly into the air whenever penetrated and the secondary explosions from the tanks munitions starts to cook off. Then look at images of western front line tanks and the turrets are still on. The M1 Abrams that were destroyed in Iraq were either destroyed in place due to break down and by SOP if we can’t recover/tow the tank, we destroy it with thermite grenades or explosive charges to deny the enemy a complete tank, we had a similar procedure for the TOW system where we used 3 thermite grenades, one for the HMMWV engine, one for the radios and one for the TOW day sight/night sight trackers. VBIEDs and IED’s we’re able to destroy the M1 Abrams but it was extremely rare, during my 15 months in Iraq we didn’t lose any M1’s or Bradley’s but one did get hit with a 500lb device which charred the exterior and shattered every optic on the vehicle and we lost two men in the turret.
After WWII we reviewed the technologies that went into German armor and incorporated them into our next generation tanks and the Russians did similarly. The Germans were able to produce high velocity guns such as the Pak 40 which did serious damage on the battlefield, in North Africa we learned some hard lessons when we fought the Germans in 1942 and quickly started to find our own way to field HV gun systems in either towed or in tanks. Velocity is a critical factor but if one has a huge HE round, it can do serious damage which the KV2 was able to dish out but the effective range was shortened. The only option a tank unit has when it’s faced with something like the KV2 is to go around it but when the terrain restricts armored vehicles to the roads, it’s a kiss of death, they have to deal with it which costs them valuable time on their plans and the German battle doctrine didn’t afford for halts like this. I understand hat Germany didn’t have the option of preparing for Barbarossa or the time of year to launch he invasion so they had to use what they had.

@@christianschiller The Austalian Armor museum has finished a restoration of a tiger minus engine and trans. Since original engines and transmissions are unobtanium they plan to use something different that can be fabbed into the Tiger to make her a runner.

The tank entered the museum in working condition in 1968, it was used by the french army before. But since it hasn't been started during more than 50 years, they do a complete overhaul before restarting it for good. Technically it is still a working tank.

What you have done here, is give me so much insight to so many different parts of the Tiger that hopefully, I will make a decent job of building it when I begin,,Many many thanks for this excellent video. Das war seinerzeit Standard. Es wurde einfach lackiert. Gleiches galt auch für die Werkzeuge wie Schaufeln, Brechstangen oder die Kurbel für den Motor zum Anlassen.

@@robblike3457 Das überlackieren geschah aber auch an anderen Fahrzeugen wie Halbketter,LKWs usw. Der Grund war einfach. Es mußte schnell gehen und ohne große Arbeit. Denn man wusste ja nicht wann der böse Feind wieder was von einem wollte. Aus dieser Zeit stammt auch der Spruch:" Dann werden wir mal die Kiste überjauchen."
Die Tiger hatten 2 Typen Ketten. Die Transportketten und die Marschketten. Hier zu sehen sind die breiteren Marschketten.
@@fireabend_1226 Falsch. Das hier sind die sogenannten Verladeketten. Bei den Marschketten gab es zwei verschiedene. Zum einen die Ostkette,die noch etwas breiter war als die normale Marschkette. Und dann gab es die einfache Marschkette. Zusätzlich konnte man noch auf jedes zweite Kettenglied einen Eisgreifer setzen im Winter. Die waren aber nicht sonderlich beliebt weil sie die Geschwindigkeit noch weiter herabsetzten

Indeed. At Saumur, you can see a Jagdpanzer IV-70 Zwischenlösung captured near Colmar with... A non exploded shell (Sherman?) lodged in the front armor plate! Free French Forces used it just after despite its fractured left plate armor by bazookas...

Very easy. You can get subtitles in your own language, generated automatically by youtube in the settings of the video. Go on subtittle and translation. It's sometimes "bizarre", from German to another language. I got a story of baby (WTF?) when the speaker described the 88 barrel... I guess a German idiomatic...
The tiger is in remarkable condition given it's age. What is the history of this tank? Is there any information about the engagements that it took part in?
It was captured by French troops in 1944 and was used against German troops at the siege of Royan, IIRC.

In dem Tiger war ich schon drin. Als ich im Februar 2005 in Aachen auf einem Lehrgang war, stand dieser Tiger und ein Panzer I auf einem Tieflader bei uns in der Kaserne. Ich habe die Gunst der Stunde genutzt und bin in den Tiger gekrochen. Er sieht leider immer noch so schlecht aus wie damals. Schade. Die waren wohl Teil einer Leihgabe und waren auf dem Weg zurück nach Frankreich wenn ich mich recht erinnere.

The museum is in the process of restoring the Tiger back into running order, like the Bovington Tiger.
Looks like they still have a lot of work to do…
This Tiger 1 entered the museum in working conditions. But hasn't been started for 50 years, so they do a complete overhaul before restarding. In one of their videos, the museum say the engine is in good conditions. The museum use this overhaul to show every steps to the public, they call it an "open-heart surgery", so people can come and see the evolution of the process.

Vilmoutiers ? why not avec 500 000 quand on voit le boulot avec les morceaux assemblés provenant d'un ferrailleur normand débarrassé début 2000 par les Australiens ( voir les films sur le Tube )....y'as moyen...et les Tigre de la Seine ( rouen), deux exemplaires visiblement faudra aussi mettre des roros, mais ça en vaut la chandelle formidable avenir !

My story is different : a long time ago, I wrote to the Imperial War Museum curator in London. He agreed very quicly to let me take pictures, and once there, I was able to go inside their Jagdpanther and take as many pictures I wanted. These pictures were used (he had my ageement) by a guy who gad a site dedicated to "the inside of AFVs" and I also sent them to the editor of Nuts and Bolts, a german armor magazine. Will he use them in a coming issue ??

Sehr geiles Video, aber mit einer Dose WD40 kommt man da nicht weit. Mir fiel auf das doch sehr sparsam Elfenbeinweiss im Inneren zu sehen war. Ich vermutet mal mehr Grau oder Grün waren die Farben neben dem Rostschutz, leider etwas schwer zu erkennen?

Dieser Tiger gehörte zur s.Pz.Abt. 503.
Die "neue" Lackierung und die Markierungen stellen ihn aber als Panzer der s.Pz.Abt. 102 da.
Werde nie verstehen, warum Museen so etwas tun.
Ja,da kann ich dir nur zustimmen. Leider wird vieles verfälscht. Für eine korrekte Restauration sollte man sich auch mit der Fahrgestellnummer beschäftigen. Denn die gibt Aufschluss darüber,wo das Fahrzeug zuletzt war,welcher Einheit es angehört hat und im besten Fall sind Bilder vorhanden die die damalige Lackierung zeigen.
...und ich hab gedacht, der ist noch im Originallack😅...da macht es dann auch nix, die Spanngurte so um die Kanone zu knallen
@@sg195286 Er wurde sogar schon mehrfach lackiert. Erst stand sehr lange mit Dunkelgelb und nur grünen Streifen in der Ausstellung. Danach wurde er dann mit der aktuellen Lackierung versehen.
Tellement triste de voir ce monstre sacré dans cet état de quasi épave.

Wagenheber? Panzerheber? Nochmal, das ist eine Winde, eine Zahnstangenwinde oder auch Stockwinde. Irgendwann war wohl mal ein Modellbauer der Meinung, es müsse sich um einen "Wagenheber" handeln und seither ist der Begriff nicht mehr aus den Hirnen zu bannen.
Stockwinde ist richtig. Aber kommt immer drauf an wenn der heber nicht Hydraulisch war.
Außerdem hieß es Kampfwagen
@@jackopschmitt5262 Panzer oder Panzerkampfwagen, beide Begriffe sind richtig. Dennoch hat man mit der Winde keinen Kampfwagen vom Schlage eines Panzer V oder VI anheben können. Sie eignete sich aber sehr gut für Arbeiten am Laufwerk. Zum Beispiel ließen sich mit ihr Laufräder fast mühelos abziehen.
