When I was a kid I used to listen to my aunt Ruthie's 45 rpm records, and I wore this song out on her record player. I just came home from her funeral today (she was only 47) and I thought about this song the whole 3 hour ride back home. I love this song...and I love you Ruthie....I'll miss you. Love Always, Pete
My Mother died July 30,1975, I was only 20yrs old with a new baby, I heard this song, it reminded me of her that moment on. After all these years I still wish when the phone rings it would be her. But I do hear her at nights when it is dark and not a sound in my house. I feel her brush her hand across my face even today while laying in the bed. I'm sure there are many out there know what I mean.
I don't know how anybody could hear this song and not be moved by the emotional content and the story that is told. It is one of the finest songs from one of the most under-rated performers in American music history.
i used to live in fort bragg,CA in 1972 And my dad would play this song on 8 track in our car, Its funny we were loud kids me and my brother but when he played this song it went dead quiet, Ive always been memmorized by this song. It just reminds me of my childhood what great times. I wish I could go back to those days i miss them very much!
I must agree with Windwalker. The seventies was a great time to be young, alive and free. It was a time never to be captured again, but if it could, Wow!
I grew up in Fort Bragg, CA. Sometime in 1975 MY dad was driving us home, I'm sure my brother and I were getting On his last nerve, And he slipped in his 8 Track of Micheal murphy martin,And I remember the song Wildfire came to play and it became dead silent. The funny thing is I am older now than my dad was back then, And i am still playing this song, I miss him so much!
I loooooove this song. It takes me back to Jr. high (the late 70's). The piano is beautiful at the beginning and the end as well as the entire song. The video is great too. I used to have a horse named "Pirate". We rescued it from an old abandoned ranch and it had lost an eye on an old rusty fence. We had it until it died 8 years later. This song always brings him back. Great job. Thanks Kristi.
Todays music is garbage, absolutely garbage. I dont even turn on the radio. nothing compares to the classics. This song is beautiful and haunting. Lovely thanks for posting.
I'm 43. I still remember this song from the 70's when I was 4 years old and loving ponies. It is being posted on my equine rescue site as its site theme song. I love this song. It makes me cry every time I hear it
This song always melts me. There are many versions of this song by Micheal floating around - they are all good and subtly different. He plays it every year locally at the symphony hall in Dallas. A great man and a timeless song!
I could listen to this song all day. Takes me way back to Jr. High - lunch time dances in the gym. 25 cents to get in. LOL. More innocent times. (sigh)
As a boy, he first heard the story of a ghost horse rescuing people in the desert from his grandfather. Years later, Murphey had a dream about this ghost horse and wrote the words and music the same day with songwriter Larry Cansler.
JasmineGrrrrlI,I too have memories of this beautiful song..couldnt wait for it to come on the radio to hear it.Was a young teenager and would listen to the words and would always get teary eyed at the end..A CLASSIC SONG FOREVER!!!!Todays Young miss out on those type songs ....SAD...
I look at what the US Military has used horses for in times if need and combat and it brings me to tears,...our fallen Soldiers, Soldiers, my friends in combat, God Bless Them...
I grew up in fort Bragg,CA in the late 60's and 70's, my dad played this song on an old 8 track in the car, and I would just sit there in complete silence listening to this song. Its funny because I'm older now than my dad was back then, and 35 plus years later I'm still listening to this song remembering listening to this song with my best friend My DAD! Thanks for he memories!
LOVE IT... I am a TRUE "child of the 70's" and this was ALWAYS one of my VERY FAV songs, STILL is... and definitely my fav Michael Martin Murphy song... and I LOVE horses so this is Beautiful... ~~ she ran calling Wildfire.......
In 1975 I was 12 an instantly fell in love with this song, as it was the same year my pony died:( It will forever hold a special meanin for me and always a tear to my eye
@fulltimer56 I was listening to this tune in the spring of '75 while a senior in high school just before I shipped off to the Marine Corps. Makes me think of a girl I dated briefly then.Nothing ever came of it. I hope she is doing well. I married another girl I met about the same time..We celebrated our thirty-third anniversary last year...Lot's of challenges and hard times but also moments of sublime beauty. Life has been good to me
Growing up in a small Pennsylvania town, I can remember exactly where I was when this song crept into my soul. Very few songs have ever had that kind of impact on me. The piano intro and ending has a classical sound to it that just adds more class to this timeless classic.
I have loved this song as long as I can remember. You have added some beautiful slides that truly capture that Wildfire spirit in God's most beautiful creations. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Beautiful song. I forwarded this to my young granddaughter who loves horses. They are magnificent creatures. Michael Murphy does a superb job of singing it. Even though it's an old song, she loves it too. Thanks for sharing.
what an absolutely wonderful piece of songwriting. i feel my life has somehow improved by listening to it. most songwriters could go their whole life and not come remotely close to producing a song of this calibre!!. thumbs up from me. total class
This beautiful song came out my senior year in hs. Danced a beautiful slow dance set to this music with my then girlfriend at my senior prom. Such beautiful memories from the mid 70's.
This is the best song ever wrote and sung. If you listen to the song and shut light in the room and think of things if you had to do it all over again, what would it be? Then sing it to your self "wildfire" and has a meaning of some kind of evident somewhere in your life and I know it does to me, that why this song has to hae some kind of effect on you.
the memories that all of you have of loved ones gone, are so heartbreaking and warming.....we are human and mourn forever, it is our nature, and music is such a vital part of it.....so sad
I have loved this song since I was a small child. I find myself coming back to it as a adult. This video made me cry. I remember how very much I love horses. I used to spend every spare second with ANY horse I could find and if I could not be with them I drew them. Thank you for this video.
Beautiful song and a wonderful video. Horses are sure beautiful, graceful and intelligent. This song also brings back memories of my senior year in high school,1982. Thanks for posting!
Beautiful song, breathtaking video with the horses--very graceful and intelligent animals. Song brings back memories of my senior year in high school,1982. Thanks for posting!
Thought of this song tonight, this was the first one the popped up on TH-cam. It's nearing the 2 year mark since you lost your mother, I hope the pain is subsiding a little. She is honored each time someone watches this!
Wow. A whole page of positive stuff. Thought we were all lost and youtube was showing me our exit. But now I have to thank the few of you that I see here. Thanks horsesaremylife, fulltimer56, and sandleegravett, geminkate, RileyMcArthur, MsHookedonit, singingmachine101 and debthompson123able for making my day. This is the FIRST time I have scrolled down and not seen the bad people spouting their bad mojo for the world to see.
Me too. I ve never stopped listening to it after all these years. My Dad loved it as well, He's since past , So my family and I play it and remember our father and we all have tears in our eyes.
Incredible video. Great music (brings sweet memories) I forwarded this one to my granddaughter who loves horses! They are beautiful creatures and the song is almost too beautiful for words.
Fell in love at the moment this song came on the radio in May 1975. Been in love with the memory ever since. Think about you all the time Ed. (On son's computer)

called in one time to WNBC to request a song late one night when i was about 11-or 12? and Wolfman Jack actually anwered! I really didn't know what an icon he was to become but I do still remember chatting with him- cool memory of a cool guy!
@ritahawkins1993 That was really wonderful Rita... this song always gets me a bit choked up. This is one that I sing to my daughter Cassidy. I remember talking with someone about how this song was written. Mr. Murphey had dreamed pretty much the entire song... when he woke up, he called one of his recording friends and they got together and cut the song. His friend told him that it will probably never chart... guess he was wrong! :~)
Great winter song, espically if you ride (horses or bikes)...makes the winter seem more meaningful. If you've ever been able to see your breath, but not able to feel your hands, you've been there.
This song makes me cry everytime I hear it. I don't know why, and its not sad tears-not happy either, just tears and emotion.
I don't know why this song always makes me cry!
Y'all feel the same, right?
When I was a kid I used to listen to my aunt Ruthie's 45 rpm records, and I wore this song out on her record player. Beautiful....God bring me back to the 60's, 70's, and 80,s and take me away from todays GARBAGE of music and t.v.!!
I think God outdid Himself when he created these beautiful creatures! Thanks for posting the song and the wonderful pics.
I'm 43. I still remember this song from the 70's when I was 4 years old and loving ponies. It is being posted on my equine rescue site as its site theme song.

Sang this at karaoke the other night, it was great. I miss the days when songwriters actually cared about making "good" music instead of "cool" music.
