    I started my stills career using sports Canon ‘big whites’ FD lenses, so manual focussing is second nature to me. I have now been working as a cameraman in Swedish broadcast specialising in sports and events for over thirty years where we use those huge and extremely heavy Canon and Fuji box lenses that can cost up to and around two million Swedish Kronors. All true broadcast lenses are only manual focussing for one main reason and that is that when shooting live we cannot have a focussing system that decides to do its own thing. We have had autofocus prototypes from Canon and Fuji in broadcast over fifteen years ago that autofocus capability wise were around where Panasonic are today, that the industry tried but ultimately rejected, so even though these lovely small mirrorless cameras are so sophisticated in their autofocus, if one is an aspiring cinematographer or videographer that wants to work on high end productions in cinema or broadcast, it is essential to learn how to manually focus to get work, there will be no autofocus equipment to help you get the shot! Manual is the cake, autofocus is the icing on the top!🙏🏾

    Thank you, I'm still waiting for the human eye AF for EM1MK2 which they promised in their marketing materials. Currently after many firmware updates it's still the tip of the nose detection system, pretty much useless. When I was choosing the M43 system I hesitated between Sony APSC and M43, now I see that if I'd buy into Sony I already would have the eye AF. Olympus if you read this please finally deliver!

      Hey Krzysztof. Regarding your problem, probably you are using caf + tracking instead caf, as Peter wrote. Mimii detects the eye, but from a closer distance. Same thing with the face. It's fine for head shots.
      Unfortunately, there is no chance for the same eye detection as in m1miii. I sold m1x and bought m1miii because of the eye detection and face selection mode.I still have m1mii and the difference in eye and face detection between mii and miii is huge. It's worth noting that eye detection and afc is much more effective with Olympus lenses. For example, sigma 56 1.4 is is not as good as oly 45 1.2(especially in low light). Difference between sigma 16mm and oly 17mm1.2 is even bigger.

      @@ForsgardPeter Mkii not equal Mkiii !!!
      I have had no problem with the Eye detection with my E-M1 MKIII. Have you chosen all the focusing points and AF-C + TR?
      In the body of the E-M1Mkiii, in the current FW 1.3 there is a fully functional Ai face detection (face, left eye, right eye) and it is not even necessary to activate all focus points, the middle sigle is enough. For me, it even works through the reduction of VILTROX to Sigma S 120-300 / 2.8 ... Otherwise, AF itself is worth the shit, because it goes through the entire range, evaluates and only then when it calculates what was the sharpest, it returns to the sharpest, but works unreliable. But I can live with that, I help myself with manual AF with the magnifying glass function.

  • @KirillIlyasov
    @KirillIlyasov 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Fuji cameras have this focusing distance scale in every model since launch (X-E1), so processing power is not an issue here. Pity that Olympus made purely marketing decision not to include it in E-M1 mark II and E-M5 mark III.

    • @kamilrakowski23

    The bird update should also be offered to em1iii owners. Or it should maybe offered to those who purchase the 100-400 or the 150-400? Some people want a relatively more compact camera which is the main reason they went for m43

    Peter, I know I am very late to this party but just today took delivery of my new OMD EM1 MK2 having jumped ship from Fuji. The camera in my opinion is fabulous but I do miss the focal distance scale that Fuji uses which I found very useful for my landscape photography. Hey Peter! Thanks for all the details regarding the update. I must say I am a little underwhelmed. I recently bought the E-M1 III and it does not get an animal detect autofocus when my G9 that’s already a few years old has it (and not just birds!). The other updates are certainly welcome though.
    Either Olympus is intentionally keeping these away from the M1 III or the G9 has a more modern CPU... Unfortunately I think it’s the former.

      I Don’t like the bird detection I. My G9 and usually turn it off. If there is a busy background the focus starts hunting around. Birds in flight I prefer a cluster focus area. Maybe they first want to test it on the M1X and if feedback is good they might implement it on other models.

      @@ForsgardPeter Yes from my readying I too have deemed that the new functionality will not be coming to the EM1 mk3. I find this a real shame I swapped from EOS DSLR system to Olympus late last year for a few reasons weight being of course a major factor but also the great pro lenses. I chose the EM1 mk3 from reading a lot of material and in most articles the same thing was mentioned it is basically a lighter EM1x with same functionality. As I mainly shoot wildlife and especially birds I am now disappointed in my choice as if I had known the EM1x was going to get things like bird priority AF before I bought the mk3 I wouldnt have purchased the mk3 and instead got the EM1x. The stand out feature for me is the ProRes RAW update. This is not only great for Olympus users but probably more important for Panasonic GH5/GH5s users. Here is my reasoning: many MFT videographers prefer the Panasonic over Oly for its full featured video toolset and some like me might have invested in Oly pro lenses to shoot manually as the Panasonic has unreliable autofocus. The only GH5 upgrade path to get any better video quality or look, is to go full frame or wait for a GH6. However now that Oly now has ProRes RAW with a Ninja V (which many serious GH5 owners already own for getting ProRes HQ and 4K60) this now gives us an upgrade path where we not only get RAW but we can now use our native Oly Pro lenses on the bodies they were made for. The video toolset is now provided by the Ninja and we Panasonic owners get to experience Oly’s image stabilisation. To top it all off we get a better stills feature set! Happy days!😀🙏🏾

    • @Interceptor121
      @Interceptor121 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ProRes RAW reads pixels 1:1 so if the resolution is 4K this means 1.35x crop. If it read the whole sensor it could do 6K anamorphic but perhaps it is too hard on the camera. I have a GH5 EM1MKII and G9 and considering the maturity of ProRes RAW if I wanted to get it I would buy a Zcam E2

    Thanks for this Peter. In your upcoming video about the new bird tracking, can you make any predictions about whether this feature will be added to the EM1-mark iii in the future? I would be thrilled if that was added. I just landed a used 300 mm f4 and had it out for my first birding trip this weekend. It was great, but CF with bird tracking would be really a great upgrade, since the existing tracking isn't really up to the challenge of birds in flight.

      @@ForsgardPeter Thanks for the reply Peter, I was afraid of that. I saw a possible answer in the comment section of another FB post.The issue is that unlike E-M1X the E-M1-miii doesn't have dual processors and as of now that kind of computational power is needed in order to pull off subject tracking. Now we see that Olympus wanted to anger his supporters in the end. But to the point. In my opinion, Olympus, with its advanced Ai functions with AF, could penetrate, through difficult times and into its (half as cheap) M1 Mkiii flagships, including FW recognition of objects and faces of people, animals and birds. He would withdraw on his side the owners of leading photo brands Canon and Nikon, who are attracted to these features, but in their brands they would pay twice as much for them. I had an OLYMPUS E-500 years ago, then I switched to NIKON and after three bodies from Nikon I tried to return to the OLYMPUS E1 Mkiii again. I was fascinated by the wisdom and speed of this camera compared to the DSLR and the SONY a7R even at a fractional price. It would be a great pity that OLYMPUS with its Ai potential perished only because the finished FW did not expand to its brands for short-sighted marketing reasons ...
      Teraz vidíme, že Olympus si chcel na záver rozhnevať svojich priaznivcov. Ale k veci. Podľa môjho názoru, by sa Olympus svvojímy pokrokovými Ai funkciami s AF mohol prebrodiť, cez ťažké časy a do svojich (o polovicu lacnejších) vlajkových lodí M1 Mkiii včítane, zapracovať FW rozpoznávania objektov a tvári ľudí, zvierat a vtákov. Stiahol by na svoju stranu majiteľov popredných foto značiek Canon a Nikon, ktorých lákajú tieto funkcie, ale v ich značkách by za ne zaplatili dvojnásobok. Ja som mal pred rokmi OLYMPUS E-500, potom som prešiel na NIKON a po troch telách od Nikonu som opäť skúsil sa vrátiť do OLYMPUSU E1 Mkiii. Fascinovala ma múdrosť a rýchlosť tohoto fotoaparátu oproti DSLR a voči SONY a7R iv zlomková cena. Bola by veľká škoda, aby OLYMPUS so svojím Ai potenciálom zahynul len preto, že hotový FW nerozšíril na svoje značky z krátkozrakých marketingových dôvodov...

    I don't use manual focusing all that often because my 62-year-old eyes aren't as good as they used to be. But, I use manual focusing most of the time for static macro subjects at my desk, with the camera tethered to the computer, and sometimes when a very busy scene confuses the AF (more common with my E-M1.2 than with E-M1.3).
    I recently took my E-M1.3 to the local zoo for the first time along with the 40-150 f/2.8 PRO and both teleconverters. I was very surprised to see that the E-M1.3 occasionally recognized and focused on bird eyes. However, it wasn't consistent or persistent like with people. But, it indicates to me that bird recognition might be within reach of the E-M1.3....if only Oly tried. :-) Even so, that's still better than the E-M1.2, which never recognized and focused on bird eyes

    Wake me up when Olympus can record RAW (ideally BRAW because of the file size) via USB-C to any hard drive directly in that format instead of via HDMI to a Ninja. I love MFT but Olympus and Panasonic are not competitive with Blackmagic. I'd love an Olympus body that could do BRAW internally or straight to a Samsung SSD via USB-C. That would be great. Until that time I'm not buying another Olympus camera body.

    • @ForsgardPeter

    Nice video Peter, thank you! I use MF quite a bit, in fact that is a big reason to have the Pro lenses, omitting this feature from other bodies with this firmware update is a Bad Business decision IMHO. It is also a Bad Business decision to not give the EM1 MKiii the various detections especially for Birds. The whole reason for me to use MFT and Olympus in particular is for small size. I really do not want an EM1x, it is bigger than I want. I love the size of the EM1 and that is the body that I want to use. Not giving me the Bird detection kind of makes me consider the Sony A9 series which has incredible AF abilities. Olympus or now JIP needs to understand their customers. I have multiple Olympus bodies but I certainly do not want to own ALL of their bodies, it is just not practical or really feasible. I like the size of the EM1 and EM5 series, they are great for travel and walking. The EM1 MKiii is a top of the line body and should have as many capabilities as possible within the processing limits. Leaving features out does differentiate but it also gives me pause when buying.

    As an E-M1 Mark II owner I'm not excited about this firmware upgrade very much, as I'm not much of a video shooter. Nevertheless, if Olympus were to ask me what video-related firmware update I'd like to see, I'd have to say direct-to-PC storage of video using Olympus Capture. This would be a terrific benefit for 'lucky imaging' in astrophotography, I think. Why OC? Because the fine focus control that's possible without touching the camera. My two cents.
    Keep up the good work with your channel, Peter. It's much appreciated.

    Congratulations on the channel I follow and I find the content very interesting and your explanations always clear and comprehensive.
    I am an enthusiast and fan of oympus and I own and have owned, speaking only of digital, 5 machines of this brand and I continue to use them with great satisfaction.
    But let's get to the question, with this new firmware olympus introduces support for new lenses for focus stacking; I believe this is simply a commercial move to be able to sell your lenses; let me explain.
    I have an old e-m1 mk1 and a mk2 now for the mk1 there is a custom firmware that allows you to perform focus stacking with any autofocus lens you can connect; I tried with the original olympus that allow focus stacking, with the m.zuiko that oly declares not working and even with panasonic and sigma lenses; they all work .....
    At this point I imagine that the block for the other lenses is imposed by the firmware only for commercial reasons and this is not a good behavior.

    I cannot say that I use this quite often, but the MF focus meter I would like (would be nice) to see on my EM1 II.
    Tell who also take photo on 40-150 Pro in MF. I'm struggle a bit when I try to focus at infinite. If I focus from near to far, then when I get the lens infinite very quick I get out of focus (general blur). It is very very short step from infinite from infinite to out of focus. If the lens is already at infinite, just a light touch of focus ring can put the lens out of focus.

    As someone who doesn't do video and a EM1 MKiii user the only upgrade for me is the focus indicator. That I will use a lot as I do a lot of manual focus work.
    Something I have asked for several times whenever I've spoken to Olympus people is, in effect, an extension of this whereby for any given aperture you hit a button, probably the normal shutter/back button focus button, and the camera focuses on to the hyperfocal point thus giving you the maximum DoF. In addition the new indicator could display the calculated in focus region as well. This is just a simple calculation after all.
    So, for a non video MK3 user this upgrade only offers one thing albeit it is a decent function.

  • @FrankCheh
    @FrankCheh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Always use Auto+manual all the time mostly to select the focal point or when. Except for action shots following a race car or the action is too fast to manual focus. An option is to use a fixed focus point ie on a race track focus on a point on the track or fence.

    Such a bummer and hassle for a gear yo're paying thousands of dollars. There's no fail safe method like reverting the firmware to previous verison if doesn't complete or you can just try again.
