  • In this video I show how I take pictures of Starlings in flight and fighting using the Olympus Em1 MkIII and the 40-15mm F2.8 lens. Because I am photographing in a small town garden, I used Pro capture to ensure I get good action shots.

    Fantastic tips, and great shots! Just returned from a bust of a weekend where ducks were fighting but I was using AF with a crosshair shape, and almost none were in focus, instead the focus was on the still water in front of the birds. Very disappointing! I haven't tried focus peaking yet, I'll have to give that a go.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the kind comment about the video. Focus peaking only works with manual focusing, so I am not sure it would be the best option for fighting ducks which are moving. It may certainly be worth a try though. If your focus is sharp in front of the birds, you would need to move your focusingg crosshair up slightly. (I would use ieither single point focus or a small group of nine and have the camera set to C-AF for these type of shots) I hope this helps

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree a softer background would,be better. Unfortunatelt I could obtian a softer background because it was too near the set up. When I do this again in the spring, I will introduce a false background.

    Very impressive images and another lesson how important the preperation for such shots is.
    How do you manage the battery capacity when having the screen on and waiting? How can you shoot with one battery? Why don't you use a battery grip?
    And do you use a cable release?

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the kind remarks. I do have quite a few spare batteries, and this enables me to have the screen on while waiting. To be honest, the birds are coming in quite frequently, so its not as if I am waiting for hours on end. I usually do a session like this for about an hour or so, so I will only get through one or maybe two batteries in this time. I do not own a battery grip. ( I am not even sure they make one for the MkIII ?) If I need the extra battery power I will use my EM1X body. I do use a cable release. Hope this answers your questions.

      Thanks for the kind comment Caroline. To be honest, even though I have the camera on a tripod, I never switch the IS off. Olympus to recommend you do but I could not see any difference between images with it on or with it off.

    How do you trigger the shutter? Do you use your finger or a remote? Have you tried controlling the shutter with oi.share?
    They're fantastic pictures. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind comments about the images. I do use a remote cable release. Its a lot easier than having to have your finger on the shutter button all the time. The OI Share App does not really work for this sort of shot because you need to `half depress the shutter button` and you cannot do this with a mobile phone. Quite easy with a remote. Hope this answers you question.

    great explanation, thanks a lot! Maybe I missed it but are you photographing on Aperture mode and auto iso or Shutter priority are Manual?

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marti, Thanks for the kind comment. I am shooting in aperature. I rarely use Auto ISO, - only when shooting video. When doing the se pictures I know roughly what the ISO should be depending on the lighting and aperature I am shooting at. Hope this helps.

    • @wilhelmienmarti2321
      @wilhelmienmarti2321 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rogerhance5883 thanks for tour answer, but when I shoot in aperture and I want a shuttertime of 1/3000 the iso must be at least 6400 if it is a cloudy day! I am then curious hw you get the high shuttertimes with a limited iso?

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@wilhelmienmarti2321 I am afraid the answer is not to shoot on cloudy days. Cloudy days are O.K for fairly static shots or portaits, where the bird sis not moving at speed but for birds in flight, there is no way around the `high ISO` problem. I only photograph birds in flight on days when its sunny and I know the light is going to be good. If its cloudy I try for other shots wher I can shoot at 1/800th sec or there abouts. Hope this helps.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tariqalkindi8045 No they will only be in focus when they fly into that position Tariq. The camera will fire when they are at various distances. Unfortunately you will get lots of images where the bird is just in from of or behind the point were its in perfect focus, so you need to take a lot of pictures. When you get a shot that is spot on though its worth all the ones that have not worked.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the kind comment Alan. I shoot in raw and import into Lightroom and use the sliders in this as a raw converter. Then export to Photoshop and do any shapening , cropping or tidying up. I do use Topaz DeNoise AI , but only on images where the ISO is 2000 and above. Below that, noise is not a real problem. Hope that helps.
