- Every second Sunday you are invited to a live Sundae Brunch on TH-cam!
The purpose of this live & interactive series is to cover topics including: jewelry sourcing, jewelry identification tips, and how to research and care for our pieces. We'll also take look at some of my vintage and antique jewelry finds.
This is the twenty ninth episode, we will be talking about costume and fine jewelry - what defines each category, how designer jewelry fits into the picture.
While many believe only fine jewelry is "real jewelry", we'll look at how costume jewelry evolved, and how to recognize details
indicating quality workmanship. We'll also take a look at antique and vintage jewelry trends from the Georgian, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco periods which have set the tone for costume jewelry designs for over a century.

My mom gifted me a victorian inspired necklace from Avon and even after more than 30 years it still looks beautiful. Thanks for all the information

My grandmother had some gold rings she described as costume jewelry. They had big synthetic stones and were only 10k, not 14k gold.
Thank you for watching & sharing! The minimum fineness of gold in order to be considered "gold" (and therefore fall into the 'fine' category) varies between countries, which has contributed to the confusions. Some prefer to simply say anything below 14k is costume... but this is a preference, and not quite technically correct.
Excellent work!❤
🥰 Thank you! ♥️
Enjoyed and learning! ❤😊

Hello 👋🏼
Hello & happy St. Patrick's day! 💚
How to verify Ferlin iron pieces
Great question! There are couple of things to look for: because the jewelry was produced by sand-casting (an item was pressed into damp sand to create the mold. When the sand dried, melted wax was poured into the impression and used to cast the iron) you can look for indications of this type of production - for example, coarseness to the surface; it can be tricky because a black lacquer and linseed oil was usually applied over top. It’s always helpful to have the “Gold gab ich für Eisen” (gold for iron), or a similar phrase and date. Both Neoclassical subjects & gothic revival motifs are also good indicators. I will try and find some more definitive tests 😁
