good timing for this video for myself as I am trying to get the drums larger and fatter in my mixes. Me and my drummer have been struggling with this but this looks like the answer as I've got great drum files from the Roland but cant get them seated in the mix. Another great tip from you, Thanks much! 🥁
Would be awesome if you had a follow-up with how you can use it for different kinds of instruments or song. The basic use i mean😊 also would you use this and also a comp on the e.tc kick, snare, base or song channel? All the best
Thank you so much for making these videos. These are very helpful. Is there a playlist for these basics? Also, Is there a place to check out the feature requests or request a feature myself that will be seen by the dev team?

The big, Big caveat, is that when you don’t insert the splitter right from the start - i.e. when having already made your gain staging and maybe applied some processing too - then you have to be much more careful about the fact that the left (or right) branch of the splitter is 6.02dB lower than the original signal. Most of the time, I have to insert a Mixtool in that left branch to bring the level 6.02dB up in order to preserve my gain staging.
Hey Gregor, can you demo how to do this using a stereo compressor on a bus using the splitter plugin? when i throw a splitter on a drum bus and route one copy to stereo pipeline to use my favorite offboard compressor, coming back in and mixing with the dry signal it always sounds weird/phasey, especially with the overheads.
Love the easy process, but doesn’t sound auto-gain compensated at all to my ears. PC adds level. Is there a way to manually gain compensate using the splitter?
Thank you very much Gregor for such informative videos. Please tell me whether it is rational to use this medot in the Projects for mastering mode. I like to do parallel compression during mastering to tighten up the mid-levels and I have always avoided the Projects mode, since there is no possibility to create a parallel bus, but thanks to you I found such an opportunity. Truly Studio One is a great program with endless possibilities =)
Thank you for your kind comment! Parallel Compression can be used in either Mixing or Mastering - It really depends on what the material you're treating needs. :) -GBY
Another great video, Gregor. I like how clean of a solution the splitter is. However, unless I’m mistaken I can’t automate the balance/volume of each “split” or am I missing something? Sometimes on a vocal I like to do parallel compression and even parallel saturation/distortion and add more parallel compression etc. in the chorus. I seem to only be able to do this if I use busses?
Thank you so much! You are correct, the split levels cannot be automated at this time. As a workaround, you could insert a Mixtool Plug-in to each split and automate that instead. Hope this helps. -GBY
Splitter really can be the most convenient function that studio one get. You don't need to send the signal into an independent fx channel while you still can do the parallel compression, good
Could we not simply achieve parallel compression simply by either using a dry/wet knob ratio (like lot of dry and a bit of wet) or if not available by using a send to a comp FX?
I sometimes use heavy 808’s in my tracks, should the 808 be paralleled compressed on its own buss? Thanks Gregor. BTW when I see you uploaded an S1 video, it’s an automatic click. Thank you.
Thank you so much! Parallel compressing the 808 a few times extra is never a bad idea. :) You could just do that by inserting another Splitter, though - no need for an extra Bus channel. -GBY
This isn't a question about Parallel Compression (forgive me... ), but I'm not sure where else to ask this question: When setting up the FET compressor, you suggested setting all Ratios on. Can you (or someone) explain what these ratios are? I have a feel for what a ratio is on a compressor, and most compressors I've used have one setting for Ratio. I find the concept of having multiple ratios confusing. Maybe the word is being used in two separate contexts? Help! Thanks! :)
you should just google/search on youtube these types of questions if you're serious abt having them answered.. everything is on the internet these days man, hope you find what you are looking for !
Hi Kirk, pressing all the Ratio buttons at once used to be a famous trick on the 1176 FET compressor to get a maximum Ratio greater than 20:1. You are correctly assuming that there is only one Ratio here, even though multiple buttons are pressed. This just used to be the way to get the highest possible Ratio amount in those compressors back in the day. :) To learn more about what Ratio means / does in a compressor, please watch this video: th-cam.com/video/WG9-2jq81cY/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps! -GBY
The fact that you still cannot change the assignment of mouse buttons for panning and zooming is simply ridiculous! This setting should be in the very first version!
Not convinced Splitter is a better workflow than a bus for parallel compression, the intent is less clear at first sight than a bus. To each his own ;-)
Yeah, but overall you have signal compensation and better control at the very end anyway so why not?😊it's like with integrated Ai tools, some ppl like it and some hate it...
I really wish presonus online tutorials had other examples than midi/virtual instrument sessions. Processing a session that is predominantly midi is what Chimps can do... Studio one is also used by people who actually play instruments but their tutorials rarely, if ever cater to that...
It doesn't work as it should. This placement of the compressor, when we turn down the volume of the parallel compression feed in this way, we are essentially turning down the volume of the drums. I checked it more than once. This is not a very good way.
@@g-prodbeatz I just use a separate FX channel, put a compressor with quick settings and a saturator on it. And I already mix this channel to the vocal bus.
@@alwayzfwdbeatz My point is not the way parallel compression works but the way Presonus treats owners of the Artist version. Artist owners are just there for some extra money and if they don't upgrade they are of no interest.
Thank you!
It would be great to have presets in the split panel
Brilliant technique! I love it! Thanks so much for this!

I have studio one 5 artist and it doesn't appear to put the splitter effect on, do you know why that is?

@@presonusit would be very nice if the splitter had a bypass like a normal plugin instead of having to turn off all inserts to AB
It would really be helpful if you could do a video using the stock Studio One compressor. A lot of us don't use other plugins. Very frustrating.
