I was gifted an oak dining table with 6 chairs that desperately needed to be reupholstered, but I really wanted to find a faster way to remove the staples. I’m definitely going to invest in that tool!
I recommend when you get to the sub layer cover, only take 3 sides off and pull it back unless you are replacing the cover, that way it makes it easier to install and in the exact location.
I was looking for a way to remove "hundreds" of staples from a kids upholstered rocker, without causing tennis elbow. I developed tennis elbow from a staple removal on some furniture pieces I was doing. I had to go to PT about six months after because it would not heal. Thank you for this recommendation as I have an oscillating tool and a blade that works on metal. Not dreading this process now.
Thanks for the demo. Bought blades. Hope to reduce the time spent doing away with the staples used to attach fabric to MCM chair backs as well as the seats. Safety glasses or goggles? Is one left with staple leg fragments that should be hammered into the wood?
yes it will cut them faster,but doesnt it leave sharp edges that might stick through the new fabrick?you know how people will grab the bottom of the chair sometimes to pull the chair in with them?and also couldnt it mes up a little, with putting the new staples in?it would hit some of the old staple feet in the wood still?
I’ve never had an issue with either of those. After my first pass, I go over the top just to make sure I got them all and even use my hammer to make sure. I never experienced any issues with hitting the old staples either
How do you remove the staples that have broken off in wood but are sticking up? There’s not enough staple to grasp or pull out. Just cut them off with that oscillating tool? Thank you for this video! I have been so frustrated with getting all the staple out to reupholster chairs.
Really good video. Wanting to get rid of my staples fast. But I'm no sure when is it a good time to use the manual vs. the oscillator? Are there specific pieces you only use it on? Can you list them?
I will not use it around “show wood”. I use it on dining seats primarily. I also use it primarily Wingback chairs and accent chairs. i have it handy and use it just about everywhere where it makes sense and is safe. If there’s potential to slip and hit the decorative finish wood surface, I would shy away from it.
What about using this on a chair that has a wood frame? Like a French chair? I just removed staples and it almost killed me! They were so long and buried deep in the wood.
What kind of blade are you using? Is it a bi metal blade that cuts through metal? Also, is your seat stapled in? Some of the older antiques used nails that are thicker and harder to remove. I use a porting motion on the nails if that’s the case I don’t try to cut through them

Safety glasses definitely help and it definitely doesn’t hurt to hammer over the top of the old staples at the end of the

Sometimes it pops all of it out, but it usually just trims it flush

Pliers if there’s enough, otherwise, trim them with the tool or hammer them down

Are there any downsides with the oscillating saw to leaving the staple teeth in the wood base? Faster, yes, but are there downsides?
Not that I’ve encountered. I’ve never had an issue with staples backfiring.

I ended up just finding a cheap 50 pack online . They don’t last forever, but they’re much more affordable than the 3 pack for $20 at lowes

Not sure. Never had to reupholster one four times. I suppose if it didn’t, I’d spend $5 and 5 minutes to make a new seat frame

wow.... 90% of the work is to remove the staples. This not only saved me time but bandaids from the cuts I would get 🤣
