I'm so glad you are explaining ages for writing. My oldest child was in school for a little while. They wanted her to write full sentence answers at the beginning of first grade, but she couldn't read or write yet. I had to tell her how to spell every word. I felt like that was a ridiculous expectation. I am grateful for this information. Thank you. 💖

You are so welcome, glad you found this information helpful. Thank you for sharing your daughter's experience, how wonderful you were there to help her through what sounds like a potentially very frustrating experience.

    This is so helpful!!!
I have a son who LOVES narration, reading, and just generally talking about what we've read, but really stuggles with writing and spelling.
This has given me what I feel is an attainable goal and simple steps to implement to get there.
    Thank you!!

Wonderful timing! Thank you, Sonya. My plan was to have my ten year old do her first written narration tomorrow. I look forward to watching her growth from clumsy beginning compositions to beautiful ones as she progresses through the years.

What if my student who is going on to Grade 5 this year can only write one sentence?

We would recommend you meet your student where they are and slowly raise the bar as they are able to! If your student is able to share more with you verbally, it can be helpful to have them start sharing orally and then continue with writing. If it is the mechanics of handwriting that they are struggling with, you can consider teaching them typing so they have an alternative method for "written" narrations as they continue to improve upon their handwriting. Here is one post that is part of a great series with some helpful tips on narration. You will see this series covers the transition to written narration. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/written-narration-next-step-composition-narration-q-part-14/
