  • This year, we changed from using AmblesideOnline to the CMEC.org for our home. One of the biggest things we’ve been doing differently is how we approach narration! In this video, I will break down the NEW ways we are now implementing narration including our notebook keeping!

Thank you so much for this! I have really enjoyed the CMEC, this year. I’m indecisive on using them again because we would be jumping into the 1900s when we are just finishing up learning about the discovery of America. But they definitely make it a hard decision. They have such a wealth of wonderful information!

Your videos have been very helpful in deciding if we want to switch from years of AO to CMEC. Thank you!

Thank you Joy, I really appreciate your videos and encouragement. I have five kids and am in the midst of juggling three AO years, a five year old learning to read and a 3.5 year old bush preschooler, so learning from your experiences and feedback has been amazing. I am currently looking into the CMEC for this coming year. The only difficulty I am facing is which AO books would get the chop as I love so many of them, but being in Australia, in a way that is easier haha. Thank you for the gift of your time and beautiful videos ❤.

Wow. This is such an honest and down-to-earth look into your home education and philosophy. My children spend their afternoons similarly 😂. Mine are still rather young, so I appreciate your discussion of how you approach written narration by year and notebooking. Cheers! -Anne

I’m so glad I found your channel! Just stepping into the CM world as I prepare to homeschool my oldest in Sept, when he turns 6. I too, am task oriented and was kind of put off of time tables because I didn’t want to be so task focused and for my kids to loose wonder and freedom. But this video gave me so much clarity!! Thank you!
One question I have is, do you write down your younger kids oral narrations? Or just listen to them?

I only write them down on their pictures they draw of the story or if they are particularly charming!

We do this but we use one notebook with tabbies.

Thank you. Could you do a more in-depth video about geography note booking?I definitelyneed to do better in that area, but am unsure how to do that.

Just watched this again❤ Do you have your children only draw/write in their narration notebooks for literature? Science entries in science notebook, geography entries in geography notebook and history readings in book of centuries? Just trying to see how you have things organised because it sounds like it is super effective at getting the children to interact with what they have read😊.

So this depends on the age! Older kids have subject specific notebooks but Form 1 (1-3 grade) have one notebook for drawing and if they are writing then one for writing. Hope that helps!

Also- they write for a variety of subjects - but mostly history, nature lore and literature. It honestly depends on what they are reading. But the Science notebook is for science lab work and other prompts given by the Sabbath Mood homeschool science guides.

One other comment, I would love to get your thoughts on how to be less task oriented, as you said that was your natural bent I believe, as I find I am too juggling all the kids needs, homeschooling, a hubby working from home, a house to keep sanitary lol. Is there anything in particular you have to done to cultivate a different attitude to schoolwork?

I’ll have to think through this! I think that the timetable has really helped me be more present and enjoy the day with my kids!

I have five children 14,11,8,5, and 3. We do the timetables as well. I will say that doing fly lady has really helped me a lot. Its something that I work into our handicraft/afternoon time... Also doing a "house reset a couple of times each day is helpful. Its everyone working together to get things looking nice and tidy again. We have worked on this as a habit through the years. Its something that I try to keep on the top of my list...lol its food, school, house. But its ok that we are all happy, fed, and the house is messy too.
