  • Adding Pittsburgh to the Big 12 could benefit the league in several ways:
Expanded Market Reach: Pittsburgh is located in a populous region with a strong sports culture. Adding the University of Pittsburgh to the Big 12 would provide the conference with access to the Pittsburgh market, potentially increasing television viewership and attracting new fans to the conference.
Enhanced Academic Reputation: The University of Pittsburgh is a prestigious research institution with a strong academic reputation. Adding Pitt to the Big 12 could enhance the conference's academic profile and attract additional research funding opportunities.
Increased Revenue Potential: Pittsburgh's addition to the Big 12 could lead to increased revenue streams for the conference. The Pittsburgh market could attract higher television rights fees and sponsorship opportunities, bolstering the financial stability of the conference.
Improved Competitive Balance: Pitt has a competitive football program and a history of success in various sports. Adding Pitt to the Big 12 could enhance the conference's competitiveness and provide additional depth to its football and Olympic sports programs.
Geographical Alignment: Pittsburgh's location in the Northeastern United States could provide the Big 12 with a foothold in a region where it currently lacks representation. This geographical alignment could facilitate scheduling arrangements and travel logistics for conference teams.
Overall, adding Pittsburgh to the Big 12 could bring several benefits to the conference, including expanded market reach, enhanced academic reputation, increased revenue potential, improved competitive balance, and improved geographical alignment.

Sorry but GT is such a minor player to the SEC and UGA, I couldn't see the Big 10 making much headway much less the XII.
Remember we know absolutely nothing about the XII as they have not played one season yet.

@@tarheel7406 That is an interesting idea. If the money is otherwise close, I can see the sense it it, for WV in particular. But why didn't the ACC try this most recently when they needed adds to counter the potential loss of Clemson and FSU? If it was an option then why add Cal and SMU? If it was not an option, why would it be an option after depletion?

The 2024 TV ratings for Pitt were middling at best. You can point to other indicators but the eyeballs are not impressive. As for the market the Steelers and Penn State are the brands with Pitts being an after thought.

I know football is the primary focus, but PITT's other sports have been on the rise in the past 5+ years. Men's soccer is now a national powerhouse making the final four in the past 4 years. Women's volleyball the same, making the elite 8 twice and final four in the past 3 years. Wrestling team is nationally ranked every year. The men's basketball team is turning the table and has put up two 20+ win seasons in a row, hopefully getting back to their ways when they dominated the Big East. Yes, football is "meh" but the other sports bring value. At least the Backyard Brawl w/ wvu would happen every year if PITT was in the Big12.

Word is that FOX was only interested in BIG12 basketball and will likely drop next contract with the expanded B1G. In this "what if" scenario in which ESPN does not elect to renew the ACC's deal, FOX could pick up the conference for southeastern content and the historically (and currently) best and most valuable men's basketball.
All of this is speculation and very contingent on the degree of ACC depletion to the SEC/B1G.

Let me lay this out... Miami will not be available to the Big 12. It depends on where FSU goes, SEC or B1G... Miami goes to the opposite choice. The Big 12 will end up with Pitt, Louisville, NC State, and Virginia Tech after the SEC and B1G takes North Carolina, Miami, FSU, Virginia, Clemson. The rest get downgraded to something like the American.

@@WeSRT4 Unlikely FSU goes to the SEC. It and CLENSON are relatively disposable to the SEC, FSU has made itself less attractive due to its scorched earth tactics, and CLEMSON has allied with UNC for a coattail agreement. FSU is B1G (~80%) or BIG12 (~10%).
As far as I can tell, the SEC has no interest in MIAMI or it's a to ~24 bubble team.
ND is unlikely to join the B1G until the P2 have consolidated enough for a separate closed playoff, so that's when MIAMI most likely gets the B1G invite.
