    Jurassic Park DTS laserdisc is a beast. The 1997 ntsc versions of the Star Wars Trilogy Special Editions are the only home versions of those cuts with a 5.1 Ac3 track. Love my Cld-d925.

    Another plus point for DTS laserdisc was used the original full 1.5mbps data that was on the Separate theatrical release CD-Rom. When DVD eventually came out they followed the Laserdisc market, having the consumers pick which audio format to play. However as DVD burst into the mainstream, the cheaper Dolby Digital titles with bonus features left the more expensive "bare bones" dts movies for dust. DTS decided to slash the audio stream in half down to 768kbs, Still higher than Dolby, but half what laser had. Jurassic park on DTS laser is amazing for that!

    You have a really good setup. I have yet to get myself a Laserdisc player decoded with Dolby Digital and DTS to find evidence that the sound is better on Laserdisc than it is on DVD. In truth, I never saw a film on laserdisc. I have watch DVD for years and DVD sounds great in 5.1 surround sound, and I've been watching Blu-ray discs since by the end of the 2010s on a Sony Blu-ray/DVD Home Theatre player (BDV-N790W) and they sound great too.
    When I get a Laserdisc player with an Onkyo AV Receiver with 5 Klipsch speakers and a subwoofer and a RF Demodulator, I would have to see it for myself.

    It’s in the mix.”
    As far as the audio goes, typically the Laserdisc version of audio is taken from the cinema master.
    Laserdiscs began with FM analog audio in 2 separate channels (not matrixed stereo). The first implementation of digital audio on Laserdisc, in 1984, added 2 discrete channels of lossless CD quality PCM audio, (exact same spec), typically including a dolby surround encode, sounds great with today’s Dolby PL II decoder which takes it to 5.1 channels. AC-3, (AKA: DD or Doby Digital), was a digital lossy encode that came after, but, gives 5.1, (sometimes 6.1), separate channels, where previous dolby surround was matrixed, and the rear channel(s) in older mixes had a limited frequency range. DTS was also implemented on some Laserdiscs, via a S/PDIF optical or coaxial connection.
    Even with higher quality lossless Dolby True HD or DTS HD MA 5.1 or 7.1 (or immersive) available on blu-ray discs, almost always the mix has been redone for the home version, (something I think began during the DVD era), so it does sound different, sometimes inferior to what was put on laserdisc. It is rare to get a cinema mix on a blu-ray, but, a few discs have claimed to do this.

    Excellent video. Nice to see others flying the ac3 dts LD flag! Two points I would mention: Speed did get an ac3 reissue that has an identical jacket and catalog number. It took me ages to find but if you check enough copies you’ll find one. Also all early releases of the film in digital are 5.0 for some reason. I’m super envious of your dts copy!!!
    Also on T2 there is an ac3 release and it’s very important. The final US release and initial us dvd release share the same master but for the film’s first ever 5.1 on video the label went to the original CDS theatrical audio 5.1 master and simply used that. Thus this release is the only one to use the revolutionary early 5.1 mix that absolutely obliterates all of the later home remixed tracks. (And this is coming from someone who likes the LD 2.0 surround mix!) This is the same case with the Jurassic Park home mixes versus the original theatrical dts.
    Of course the CDS mix was only used in the big cities for the initial premiere engagements and so the final LD/first dvd is only the theatrical cut. I’ve never found the ld as it’s quite pricey and rare but the dvd is identical and can be found in used bins for 99 cents where I finally found mine.

    Ill be making a video on this later but it goes as follows. Lets just say for simplicity you have a LD player only. You go from the back of the LD player to the demodulator with an RCA cable into the AC3 port. You then go from the demodulator to the reciever with an optical or digital coax depending on what you have - BOOM Dolby digital. For DTS capable players you would go right to the receiver with optical...but you still need the demodulator for the AC3 audio.

I have a Pioneer DVL-919 LaserDisc Player and a Sony STR-DE697 AVR which has Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES decoding. I have a demodulator for my AC-3 discs and it works flawlessly. I tried both Optical and Coax cables straight to the AVR for DTS but my AVR shows a decoding error message. I also tried switching audio tracks on my LaserDisc player but it didn't help. You didn't seem to notice that "Aspect Ratio" setting on your receiver- set THAT to 4x3 and it will output an upscaled signal in the right dimensions. I have a Marantz receiver with that same interface and run all my analog formats through it, no need to adjust the TV between those and 4K/HD sources.

    • @bsgtrekfan88
      @bsgtrekfan88  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't because I'm using a 4 x 3 projection screen and if you watch the video when I switch between the television and the projector the aspect ratio is perfect at least it's running that way and has done so since I installed it :-) maybe not in the video. I have everything set to AI so there's no upscaling but when I switch over to a Blu-ray or whatever it's the proper resolution. If I switch it to upscale/anything above 480 I the aspect ratio is overridden almost like it thinks it knows what it's doing and will not allow me to zoom or stretch properly to give me the proper aspect.

    Before in the 1930's after the Viotaphone 78RPM discs then it was optical soundtracks of mono with the odd few stereo ones then back to more mono then magnetic stripe came about in the 1950's mag tracks offered 35mm four track mag the rarest, and maybe the best still the best six-track mag 70mm it was at first noisy then Dolby came in during the late 1960's and not too soon had an actual working NR noise reduction that really worked and first movie was Callan early 1970's mono with Dolby A-type not too far away optical SVA twin track Dolby Stereo A-type came about some of the early ones had no surround.
    First surround on Dolby Stereo was A Star Is Born, got that on LASERDISC!
    The biggest break for Dolby labs was STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND 35mm Dolby Stereo A-type and both also released with sub bass track on 70mm the first biggest break for sub bass was EARTHQUAKE in SENSURROUND few years earlier with a sound generator that is basically a clever box of pink noise that used pilot tones of 12Khz on the film print to trigger the SENSURROUND MOD I and later versions of MOD II and MOD III SENSURROUND retired before end of the late 1979? But there they are classics EARTHQUAKE is the best!
    STAR WARS / CLOSE ENCOUNTERS offered LCR mono surround and SW track.
    Year later SUPERMAN THE MOVIE offered first EVER! Split Surrounds, stereo surrounds that today is commonly called 5.1 After Tom Holman called it 5.1 at sound convention during the late 1980's.
    The 70mm original of format 43 is different layout over 5.1 for the cinema processor. 70mm six track on some of the tracks was bit frequency limited in the low range and just tiny bit in the high, high range of around 18Khz then again human hearing is not all good at high, high frequencies that need to be greatly amplified to be even be heard slightly heard?
    Dolby SR-D offered greater frequency range down to 5Hz to 20Khz if you can hear 20Khz? Feel 5Hz with bass shakers is possible with subs you'd need so many to double up with loss and EQ shape it all to be even noticed a little bit below 20Hz. All the rest of the bass in the other channels should be FELT if drowned out by the sub then the sub and its levels are far too high.
    Today only few cinemas that run 35/70mm in selected cinemas still showing 5 perf 70mm and not that crappy imax 70mm or that crappy fake imax called LIEMAX Yuck.
    Regular 70mm RULES and imax 70 SUCKS.
    Look at SPEED THX LASERDISC here looks better than that fucking bluray that fucking 4k. I have turned my back on fucking bluray and fucking 4k fucking uhd. Utter Horrid Diarrhoea UHD. I even thew uhd in the cat litter box and my cats took a shit on bluray 4k uhd.

    So let me get this straight for DTS I need a separate decoder or connect an optical cable straight from the player to the A/V receiver for that sound, but if I use a Dolby Digital decoder I get nothing out of it, and without the decoder I get static? Also a second question I'm looking for a couple of LaserDiscs from late 1999 to early 2000, and they both have Dolby Digital Surround EX which is the same as AC-3 5.1 but with an additional channel added to the rear of the room, do you know anything about EX and how to decode that properly. Thanks

    • @LaurenGlenn
      @LaurenGlenn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I remember about DTS, they said that if you took the optical output from a laserdisc player, you can put it in a receiver that does DTS and it will play as DTS. No demodulator needed.
      Dolby Digital didn't sacrifice the analog tracks and they decided to put the AC-3 track on the one analog channel since most people couldn't afford AC-3 at the time but more people would use the digital output for stereo out.

  • @andrewpaluch5764
    @andrewpaluch5764 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just an fyi Coaxial is superior to optical due to the fact that optical out requires a conversion to optical then back from optical leaving room for errors in the conversion processes

    The worst thing for me is that now that I finally got a laserdisc player (two actually, a CLD-D504 and CLD-D505.... the 504 came with a bundled in AC3 demodulator and a TON of movies, so I had to get the second player ;) )...... the 504 and 505 BOTH have the AC-3 output but neither one has the optical output so I can play DTS discs. :/ And back in the 90s, I had a CLD-3070 which had the optical output but no AC-3. :/ I never owned any DTS discs because DTS didn't really become affordable until DVD and many receivers didn't have both Dolby Digital and DTS. :/
    Shame though. I used to really like the sound of DTS on DVD too..... but there weren't many DTS discs around where I lived and AC-3 was on almost all new releases near the end.
    Oh well.... what can you do?

      So the answer is simply is yes what they did was they included a mono audio track in one of the channels of audio in case you do not have a decoder kind of like a last resort kind of thing most laser disks however were simple to channel stereo so most people never knew about it back in the day it took a lot of equipment and money to get up and running- AC3 To me sounds better than anything out there right now including Blu-ray audio

      All early AC-3 processors and AC-3 AV Receivers decoded only Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro-Logic. DTS came later and only but a few high end AV Receivers incorporated an AC3-RF Input with both Dolby Digital and DTS decoding options. Furthermore, as LD winded down in popularity, we started to see AV Receivers sporting both Dolby Digital and DTS decoding as a ubiquitous surround option but AC3-RF inputs were now being removed.
      Fast forward to today, the only way to have all the decoding options available is to run a set-up just like in this video. Get a current AV Receiver and mate it to an old AC3-RF Processor and run AC3-RF out and Digital out of the LD player to the processor. Then connect a Digital out from the processor to the AV Receiver so it can transfer the unprocessed digital bits of Dolby Digital and DTS to the AV Receiver (so essentially speaking, the processor is just used as a digital switch box and nothing more).
