I was 16 years old in 1972 when I got into Wishbone Ash, via their album "Argus", such a great time for music and Wishbone Ash. Their live album "Live Dates" is an absolute banger, especially the track Phoenix.
Andy Powell and Ted Turner were voted "Two of the Ten Most Important Guitarists in Rock History" (Traffic magazine 1989). Melody Maker (1972) described Powell and Turner as "the most interesting two-guitar team since the days when Beck and Page graced The Yardbirds". Several notable bands have cited Wishbone Ash as an influence, including the Eagles, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Thin Lizzy, Metallica, Dream Theater, Overkill and Opeth
You should check out their songs "Time Was" and "The King Will Come" from the "Argus" album. It's their best album by far and I've been jamming out to it since 1972.
I describe Wishbone Ash as the most "advanced" _garage band_ to come out of England in the 1970's, which is to say they were a *guitar band* that relied solely on their guitar playing skills, & an affection for vocal harmonies, to produce their sound. They had _two lead guitarists_ who would trade off lead solos, of course, but they also harmonized so well with each other that it became a signature part of their sound. And then there's the bass player, Martin Turner, who (like Chris Squire) would often play "lead bass" during runs, playing off the other guitarists while holding down most of the lead singer duties. I strongly recommend listening to all of Side Two of their debut album, Wishbone Ash, featuring two long songs: *Handy* featuring a lot of extended bass melodies, & *Phoenix* which may be their best presentation of their combined talents at that time. (The whole damn album is really great, actually) I actually saw them twice in Tampa, FL, the 1st time only a few months after catching YES for the first time on their Close To The Edge tour. The price of admission was half of what I had paid to see YES, and it was sparsely attended, but everyone there was blown away by their talent. We liked them so much that we had to see them again when they came back through some months later. I think their biggest selling album was their third, *Argus,* & it does have a few must listen songs ( *Sometime World* stands out). They never had that massive hit to send them into the Big Time, but everyone who listened to their albums automatically became a fan. Wishbone Ash's excellence was one of the reasons why I quickly got turned off by most of those Formula Rock _hair bands_ of the 1980's, which I found quite stale & repetitive. Thank God grunge came around at the very end of the 1980's to finally end the pain of mostly boring Formula Rock...
That makes me appreciate them more. They were nowhere near as accomplished musician or songwriting-wise as Yes BUT all the prog bands were art and private school boys so they had a massive leg up.
The two lead guitarists Andy Powell and Ted Turner were both 21 years old on this album. Amazing! My top 4 favourite bands of all time in order....Jethro Tull, Wishbone Ash, Gentle Giant and Horslips. BTW: The two Turners are not related.

Wishbone Ash..they are noted for their extensive use of harmony twin lead guitars....not forgotten, but yeah...mentioned far too little. Wishbone Ash is also one of the bands that reveals their potential, especially live. That's why I recommend, like some others here, the live LPs "Live Dates" (first side, all songs on the studio LP "Argus", but don´t take it from "Argus", take it from "Live Dates") and "Live Dates Vol.II - Additional Tapes" (playing tip "Time Was", great drumming). One of my favourite bands of all time. Lucky enough to see them live back in the day. Pilgrim is WA at its most proggy. Other gems include Errors of my way, Phoenix -live dates version, Lullaby, the whole album ARGUS in one listen, Persephone (live version from Live dates II ), everybody needs a friend, silver shoes, runaway, alone, way of the world (live dates II version)living proof....I mean, the list goes on. Musicianship is absolutely fabulous throughout their career.
When I was at school all budding guitarists followed Wishbone Ash. The band were first to pioneer twin lead guitars and harmony lead guitar. Try any track from album Argus, which beat Dark Side of Moon to rock album of the year.
In the US, it was indeed Quicksilver Messenger Service, back in ‘67. The Allman Brothers hit it hard starting in ‘69. In the UK, Wishbone would’ve been inspired by the original Fleetwood Mac, in ‘68 😺🎸🎸👍
Wishbone Ash pushed the twin guitar sound but blues players had dabbled years earlier, as did the Beatles. The Allman Brothers were doing something similar around the same time but this woefully underrated band lit the fuse that inspired Lizzy, Priest, Maiden and many others.
A criminally underrated band, so cool to see you appreciate them! Wishbone Ash never had that one BIG HIT(!) to take them to the top, like Roundabout, Aqualung, 21st Century Schiz, Money, etc, but they belonged in that company! 👍

Some personnel in the Ash also played in King Crimson and Uriah Heep, among other similar bands, so you're spot on noticing some similarities. The deluxe edition of their album Argus is 100% listenable from start to finish, and includes a killer live cut of this song.
I have their first album as well as a live album called Live Dates. Discovered their music as a freshman in college in 1971. A dude on our floor in the dorm had hundreds of records from bands that at the time I'd never hear of before. Wishbone Ash was one of those.
Their Argus album is a prog classic and one of the greatest in music. Twin lead guitars Andy Powell and Ted Turner. First saw them in 1972 at the Greens theatre Glasgow. I was still at high school with my beautiful girlfriend Angela. Seen them many times since and they are still touring the world.

What a freaking band! Been a fan since I bought Argus after hearing a couple tunes on College radio, I was blown away and quickly sought out their first two albums, including this song. Incredible band with the twin guitar interplay, if you liked this you need to hear the Argus album, it is their pinnacle for the original band. They evolved when Ted Turner left the band and Laurie Wisefield joined on 2nd lead guitar and they had a string of great albums with him. I was lucky to see them twice and still have them in my rotation to this day. Please listen 'The Pilgrim', 'The King will come' and 'Phoenix' on 'Live Dates' (1973), It's breathtaking. Other phantastic Albums are: Their Debut Album (1970 - same Titel, includes their all time Classic Track 'Phoenix'); 'Pilgrimage' 1971; 'Argus' 1972 (includes 'The King will come'; Throw down the Sword'; 'Time was' and 'Blowing free') - Album of the Year 'Melody Maker'; There's the Rub' (1974); New England' (1976); 'No Smoke without Fire' (1978 - incl. Steve Upton wrote my favourite Wishbone track "Leaf And Stream". Features on my favourite album of theirs "Argus". I don't think I know of any of their songs that aren't exceptional.

Don't get many songs in 7/4 time these days. WA are not a prog rock band but the time signature for this obviously is. The drummer and bassist were recruiting a guitar player (to go with a keyboard player) and couldn't decide between Ted and Andy, so ditched the idea of keyboards, picked both and the twin lead guitar rock format was born.
To me they are Prog as for many other fans. Even if they have less complex songs, they also have some stranger ones. Phoenix and Handy are long and complicated tracks.
Greetings from the UK i was lucky enough to grow up seeing these guys many times in the 70s . They were absoloutely great live . Check out Live Dates from 1973 . Not a single overdub was added ! . & Do listen to Phoenix from their debut album Wishbone Ash .Im certain its where L.Skynnrd got the idea for Freebird. Incredible musicians . Enjoy the journey
I saw Wishbone Ash in Detroit, COBO Arena, where they pulled off a unique visual effect: the wide spotlight was on the guitarist, who was stationary on the stage. As he played a hypnotic ditty repeatedly the spotlight gradually tightened, but it was so gradual that it appeared that the guitar player's head ROSE INTO THE AIR, about 15 feet above the stage! I knew I wasn't hallucinating because a bright smattering applause erupted. I think you had to be intently focused in watching, and not looking at anything else in order to get the effect of the illusion. Maybe ten percent of us got to see it. But it was really cool!
Pilgrimage and Argus are 2 incredible albums. I would describe them as hard rock meets prog rock. They changed styles somewhat after that, with some very soft melodic tracks and some very hard rock, but their discography is one of the very best by any band. I'd recommend Wishbone 4, No Smoke Without Fire and Hear to Hear as not well known but very good albums, but Argus is their masterpiece. It's absolutely perfect.
Wishbone Ash, The Who, and Gentle Giant were my big three when I was a teen. They’re still touring the world though Andy Powell is the only original member left. The “new” guys in the band are all first rate.
Hi Lee. Great to see you start this band. I wouldn't have start with this album from them, one of my least favorites. Argus would be a good second try. If you do, please do Warrior and Throw Down the Sword together. And, Lee, if you like bass, listen to Handy from their first album from 1970 : a long bass intro, maybe the first song in rock proposing this. I saw WA 3-4 times and they are always great to see live, and simple guys you can talk to.
Wow you discovered wishbone ash, you’re in for a treat! This is just the tip of the iceberg. Next songs I suggest “Baby The Angels Are Here”, “Lorelei”. “Life Line”. Talk about melodic guitar and killer tone!
Try listening to "Handy" from the self-titled WISHBONE ASH album. It starts with a minute and a half bass solo! It then cycles through several different styles of rock-based music.
They came up with a new kind of guitar-rock back then. Not as hard as Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple, more melodious with the two lead-guitars. But still rock-music, not folk or soft-rock. Although definitely not classical music their songs reminded me of times long gone, a kind of english romanticism from the middle ages. Hard to tell, maybe the themes of their songs and their album covers had something to do with it. The Live Double-LP stood at Number One for a long time to me. The sound and performance is even better than in the studio version and that counts for "The Pilgrim" too. The snare slams so loud and full, you think it´s about to burst.
No one sounds quite like Wishbone Ash did, but you can hear their influence in a lot of other bands. "Why does that sound familiar? Ah, so and so did something kind of similar a few years later." And the guitars are so clean when it was fashionable to use more distortion. Not a lot of technology tricks with these guys -- it's usually just the unadorned music. But yeah, I consider them to be progressive. Try something with lyrics; anything off of Argus also be good.
This is not the lullaby you're looking for, although that is on this same album. Also, try the long version of "Alone". The outro is absolutely stellar.
sounds like wishbone ash to me lol, love them and still go to see them, well Martin Turners band anyway, they still play it how it was. Listen to the 1st 4 albums all classics and all different. Argus however is the pinacle.

They still tour, but, the there are 2 versions of them, I saw Martin Turners version a couple of years ago, they were absolutely amazing. Check out their next album, The Rub. Blowing Free is my fave.

The same thing seems to be said every time someone hears wishbone Ash for the first time how come I’ve never heard of them before? it is a mystery to those who know them dude seriously start out with their first album. Listen to the whole thing you already heard the best song of the second album go listen to Argus and there’s the rub and just testing. They’re still playing today just missed him last month. I live in Kansas City would had to travel to Des Moines. It would’ve been worth it though.! This band is seriously as good as any out of the early 70s. They have over 30 albums, including one put out in 2019 which kicks ass called coat of arms. Try listening to the Way of the world parts one and two or lifeline. Enjoy my friend enjoy.

WA were I think very influenced by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac when not in their pure blues mode, with that reverby twin lead sound.

My favorite bands are early Wishbone Ash, early Genesis, and Renaissance with the amazing vocals of Annie Haslam.

Incredible band with the twin guitar interplay, if you liked this you need to hear the Argus album, it is their pinnacle for the original band. They evolved when Ted Turner left the band and Laurie Wisefield joined on 2nd lead guitar and they had a string of great albums with him. I was lucky to see them twice and still have them in my rotation to this day. A very worthy band to check out, do The King Will Come, that entire side of Argus is a must listen and blows away anyone who listens to it. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
Hi Lee. Wishbone Ash is one of my absolute Favorit Bands. Their Debut 'Wishbone Ash (1970; untitled) is, in my opinion, one of the greatest Debutalbums ever! Please listen 'The Pilgrim', 'The King will come' and 'Phoenix' on 'Live Dates' (1973), It's breathtaking. Other phantastic Albums are: Their Debut Album (1970 - same Titel, includes their all time Classic Track 'Phoenix'); 'Pilgrimage' 1971; 'Argus' 1972 (includes 'The King will come'; Throw down the Sword'; 'Time was' and 'Blowing free') - Album of the Year 'Melody Maker'; There's the Rub' (1974); New England' (1976); 'No Smoke without Fire' (1978 - incl. 'I see red' and The way of the World'); 'Just Testing' (1980) and last not least, not forget their absolute phenomenal Live Albums 'Live Dates (I) 1973 & 'Live Dates II (1976-1980); Wishbone Ash also were, without a doubt, one of the best live bands of all time and also one of the best bands ever. Steve Upton wrote my favourite Wishbone track "Leaf And Stream". Features on my favourite album of theirs "Argus". I don't think I know of any of their songs that aren't exceptional.

Don't get many songs in 7/4 time these days. WA are not a prog rock band but the time signature for this obviously is. The drummer and bassist were recruiting a guitar player (to go with a keyboard player) and couldn't decide between Ted and Andy, so ditched the idea of keyboards, picked both and the twin lead guitar rock format was born.
To me they are Prog as for many other fans. Even if they have less complex songs, they also have some stranger ones. Phoenix and Handy are long and complicated tracks.

Greetings from the UK i was lucky enough to grow up seeing these guys many times in the 70s . They were absoloutely great live . Check out Live Dates from 1973 . Not a single overdub was added ! . & Do listen to Phoenix from their debut album Wishbone Ash .Im certain its where L.Skynnrd got the idea for Freebird. Incredible musicians . Enjoy the journey
I saw Wishbone Ash in Detroit, COBO Arena, where they pulled off a unique visual effect: the wide spotlight was on the guitarist, who was stationary on the stage. As he played a hypnotic ditty repeatedly the spotlight gradually tightened, but it was so gradual that it appeared that the guitar player's head ROSE INTO THE AIR, about 15 feet above the stage! I knew I wasn't hallucinating because a bright smattering applause erupted. I think you had to be intently focused in watching, and not looking at anything else in order to get the effect of the illusion. Maybe ten percent of us got to see it. But it was really cool!

Pilgrimage and Argus are 2 incredible albums. I would describe them as hard rock meets prog rock. They changed styles somewhat after that, with some very soft melodic tracks and some very hard rock, but their discography is one of the very best by any band.
I'd recommend Wishbone 4, No Smoke Without Fire and Hear to Hear as not well known but very good albums, but Argus is their masterpiece. It's absolutely perfect.
Wishbone Ash, The Who, and Gentle Giant were my big three when I was a teen.
They’re still touring the world though Andy Powell is the only original member left. The “new” guys in the band are all first rate.

Hi Lee. Great to see you start this band. I wouldn't have start with this album from them, one of my least favorites. Argus would be a good second try. If you do, please do Warrior and Throw Down the Sword together. And, Lee, if you like bass, listen to Handy from their first album from 1970 : a long bass intro, maybe the first song in rock proposing this. I saw WA 3-4 times and they are always great to see live, and simple guys you can talk to.

Try listening to "Handy" from the self-titled WISHBONE ASH album. It starts with a minute and a half bass solo! It then cycles through several different styles of rock-based music.
They came up with a new kind of guitar-rock back then. Not as hard as Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple, more melodious with the two lead-guitars. But still rock-music, not folk or soft-rock. Although definitely not classical music their songs reminded me of times long gone, a kind of english romanticism from the middle ages. Hard to tell, maybe the themes of their songs and their album covers had something to do with it.
The Live Double-LP stood at Number One for a long time to me. The sound and performance is even better than in the studio version and that counts for "The Pilgrim" too. The snare slams so loud and full, you think it´s about to burst.
No one sounds quite like Wishbone Ash did, but you can hear their influence in a lot of other bands. "Why does that sound familiar? Ah, so and so did something kind of similar a few years later." And the guitars are so clean when it was fashionable to use more distortion. Not a lot of technology tricks with these guys -- it's usually just the unadorned music. But yeah, I consider them to be progressive. Try something with lyrics; anything off of Argus also be good.
This is not the lullaby you're looking for, although that is on this same album. Also, try the long version of "Alone". The outro is absolutely stellar.
Most people hear Sometime, World first from Wishbone Ash. Def recommend that one and Persephone and Lorelei are 2 of my other favorites!
sounds like wishbone ash to me lol, love them and still go to see them, well Martin Turners band anyway, they still play it how it was. Listen to the 1st 4 albums all classics and all different. Argus however is the pinacle.

They still tour, but, the there are 2 versions of them, I saw Martin Turners version a couple of years ago, they were absolutely amazing.

The same thing seems to be said every time someone hears wishbone Ash for the first time how come I’ve never heard of them before? it is a mystery to those who know them dude seriously start out with their first album. Listen to the whole thing you already heard the best song of the second album go listen to Argus and there’s the rub and just testing. They’re still playing today just missed him last month. I live in Kansas City would had to travel to Des Moines. It would’ve been worth it though.! This band is seriously as good as any out of the early 70s. They have over 30 albums, including one put out in 2019 which kicks ass called coat of arms. Try listening to the Way of the world parts one and two or lifeline. Enjoy my friend enjoy.
