    Thanks for all these helpful tips - all these dismounting strategies really help making camera repairs really easy. I had a fogged Zoom lens that I wanted to throw away, I gave it a shot at cleaning and now it is in perfect working order again!

      The Xpan, out of production for just a little over decade, properly would not be considered a vintage camera... but what a cool camera, definitely a classic.

    awesome! am i right in thinking that there is no alignment worries in taking lenses apart? all individual lenses sit snug in their housing? only alignment is with shimmy rings?

    For small and odd sized dial spinners(usually on the winder) you might be able to make a rubber plug out of sugru.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed... sugru is a most useful product. If you get an opportunity to try it maybe you could comment on the results.

    Have you any suggestions on the type of grease used on the helicoils for overhauling a lens?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A local bike repair shop might share a glop of silicone bicycle chain grease that will work in a pinch.
      A product that works very well in most helicoid service application is MicroLubrol Helimax-XP .

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      astore.amazon.com/fixoldcam-20/detail/B002QIACDO This spanner wrench would be ideal, but might be considered to costly for one lens repair. The Fix Old Cameras playlist - Lens Repair Basics might also be helpful. Also, with a little imagination and ingenuity, often a suitable spanner wrench can be fashioned from tools or items you have on hand.

      JIS type S #00 (.080 - 2.0mm) and JIS type S #000 (.055 - 1.5mm) screwdriver blade sizes will cover nearly all Japanese manufactured classic camera and lens screws. If you want to pick just one then the 2.0mm size would be the choice. For some options you may go to - astore.amazon.com/fixoldcam-20?node=1&page=1

      Screwdriver ph 000 from a well known auction site.
      That's the smallest size available.
      Try and get a magnetic one.
      ph 00 fits better for most camera screws.

      Fix Old Cameras Yep. I thought your videos were very good.
      I do buy cameras ,lenses etc and fix them and sell them on more expensively sometimes.
      Ive ruined many a half decent non working camera or lens in the name of research and learning but did them on cheap things.
      Sometimes i get a bum deal like when a screw just wont budge no matter what and that sort of thing.
      You really need to get the thing in your hands and inspect it to see if its fixable.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      zenoist2 Sounds like you are having fun in the process. Try heating a stubborn screw with the tip of a soldering iron. Also be sure you are using the proper tip and type of screwdriver for the screw being removed.

    • @zenoist2
      @zenoist2 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive ruined so many lenses and cameras its untrue in the learning process. About the only good thing you can say about me is I try to pick cheap ones to try out and see how it goes.
      One good idea is that you need to take a LOT of photos as a record of what you are doing and how everything fits back together. I use a canon a470 which has a rather good macro capability for close up photos.
      Thank you for the tip.

    I'm about to begin purchasing a set of vintage photo lenses for cinematography. I'm based in Japan where I can get good prices on secondhand Mamiya Sekor C 645 and Canon FD prime lenses. Of those two type of lenses, which would you say are the easiest to dismantle and clean? I ask because I can get especially good prices on lenses with fungus, etc - and, thanks to your tutorials, I'm quite keen to buy "junk" lenses and fix them myself! :-)
    Hope you see this message and can offer your opinion on the subject.
    If anyone here in the comments section has an opinion on the difficulty of dismantling and cleaning Mamiya Sekor C 645 versus dismantling and cleaning Canon FD prime lenses, I'd also be very grateful for your advice (I notice that some of you seem to have extensive experience). Thanks :-)

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The FD's pivoting breech mount might cause a little difficulty on reassembly, but once you figure out the timing it should not prove to be too difficult. Otherwise as a general overview that are probably equal. However, different focal lengths require some changes in the disassembly.

    I never ever dismantled my Yashica SLR camera lenses. Can I go ahead and take the risk of cleaning the SLR lenses? Even if I be extra cautious while handling this, what is the risk involved in damaging the lenses? Cheers from Kolkata, India.

    Is this process still the same with a rangefinder with a fixed lens?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are similar techniques used in all repairs of any lens. How and what and when will depend on the differences of design and construction.

    Hi Folks, Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. I'm putting this question here figuring it is a basic question. Have you had any luck cleaning a camera from a smoker? I picked up a beautiful Black Enameled Canon FT and when I opened the box I was overwhelmed with a heavy nicotine odor. I should return same but other than that it is a nice camera with a 1.4 FL lens. I am an ex-smoker so I know that nicotine has an oily residue. I figure I'll use some alcohol wipes to wipe down the entire camera. After that is done I do not know what to try next. Any ideas or suggestions will be great. I also have the original ERC case and it reeks as well. Thanks Tom

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Contact Cleaner available here
      www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-c06c729d?ref=ac_inf_hm_vp
      Spray on a cleaning wipe and rub the camera down. Also, n-Hexane or brake cleaner n-Hexane will not harm plastics. Once it looks good, if there still is an odor, pack in crumbled news print and keep changing out the news print every couple of days. Eventually the stale smoke smell will be completely gone. Treat the case the same way it might take quite a bit longer for the smell to be drawn out.

    • @tomheckhaus7617
      @tomheckhaus7617 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, as the last message, apologies for the delay. I do appreciate your responses. I did wipe the camera down with a higher percentage alcohol wipes and I did see a noticeable amber colored residue coming off the camera. I can get Contact Cleaner in my local ACE hardware I'll try that as a second treatment. The ERC case was soaked in warm water and turned inside out. Using dish detergent and a stiff brush I washed it out. Rinsed it and hang dried it for a week. Then used a heat gun to heat up the leatherette so it was pliable to turn it right side out again. Applying a leather restorer makes it looks and smell pretty good now. The camera has also lost it's nicotine smell as well. Thanks for the help.

    Is it possible to fix slow shutter speed on a old copal graflex lens?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the slow speeds are hanging up or sluggish than it usually is caused by the slow speed escapement. It would be possible to show how to access, remove, clean and service the slow speed escapement of a copal between the lens style shutter. As the procedure is somewhat delicate it is not overly technical or involved and could be featured in a Fix Old Camera video. Thank you so very much for your patience and suggestion.
