  • Hello Friends,
    Today I share with you a very important topic in lens repair, that is, how to work with lens helicoids. Helicoids are essential for lenses as they provide their focusing capabilities. Working with lens helicoids is fairly easy if you are methodic and mark everything as you proceed on their repair.
    In fact, sometimes I buy very cheap lenses on the net that are sold as broken but many times it's just lenses that were disassembled and the owner didn't manage to build it back correctly.
    keywords: Helicoid, focusing helicoid, helicoid, service lens helicoid, service helicoil, clean helicoid, helicoid repair, lens repair, lens service, clean lens helicoid, How to service a lens helicoid, how to clean helicoid, how to disassemble a lens, how to disassemble a lens helicoid, lens screw, screw lens, disassemble lens, reassemble lens, clean lens, nikon, canon, sony, olympus, contax

    Thank You for your video! I have a Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 AIS that has a rough spot in the focusing ring. I'm going to lube it myself with the instructions you gave. Thanks again!!

      Hello Larry, thanks for the comment. Don't forget the most important thing, be patient and mark everything. To begin disassembly the 35 1.4 if I remember correctly, you start by removing the set screw that is on the front barrel. Check my video on the 50 1.4 Ais as that part is similar. The rest I don't remember. Cheers.

    This is how I imagined how it should be done, but consulting a professional for the actual technique is essential, thank you.

    Working on lenses scares me I have to admit, one little error and the lens is ruined. The lens I am trying to repair is off a British Agilux Agima camera, I think I have got the adjustments right, now I am waiting for the helicoid grease to arrive, apply and reassemble, fingers crossed. Cheers.

      Working with helicoids is a matter of patience, if you don't have it you're doomed. I'm planning a video to explain people how to choose their lens grease. What grease did you select? Cheers.

      @@diyextravaganza I bought the cheapest HELIMAX-XP 10g size -40c to +149c made in USA £8.49 I have given both parts of the helicoid a thorough clean with nail varnish remover. when the grease arrives next week I will give them a final clean with lighter fluid. They run together very smoothly after the clean already. Cheers.

      @@ianwilkinson4602 Thanks for the information, I really need to complete that video about grease selection. From what I quickly read, it seems to be a good grease but you don't get many technical details about it, which is a pity.

    Will this procedure work with the Nikkor 135mm 1:2 ? I love this lens for photographing cats. The focus rings is so hard to move that the cat runs away before I get her in focus. The photographic repair shop in my city charges more than a doctor. Also can I use Mobill One Axle Rod grease on the helicoid? It works great on my motorcycle.

      The procedure will work, however, each lens disassembles differently so you need to figure out how to disassemble it. Where are you located? Cheers

    So you use SKF but share the link for JHT #10. How do these two compare and which one is lighter? Did you have issues with SKF separating and leaking onto aperture blades ?

    Is there not also a very fine thread, which is the other half of the helicoid? This needs all the old hard grease removed also.

    • @diyextravaganza
      @diyextravaganza  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I took this lens as example since it has a very simple helicoid mechanism, but you're right, some lenses have also a very fine thread on the focusing mechanism. The old grease need also to be removed there, I have a 50mm 1.4 Ais on my desk waiting for service and it has such mechanism, keep tuned to the channel for that.

      @@diyextravaganza Look forward to it. I saw a good tip on another tube vid, before removing the helicoids, wind the lens in & make a witness mark. On reassembly, winding in, the witness marks should line up, proving helicoid is in the correct thread.
