I have to agree with Jason on this one! While my Bettas live in 5.5 gallons on their own, my pair of Honey's in 20 gallon along with a school of dwarf golden barbs just melt my heart! So adorable and interactive :)

I don't even think of gouramis & bettas in the same class, it's just different fish for different tanks- I keep my bettas out of community tanks (and my bettas are the least from overbred, most are outcrosses and healthy crazy)

I’ve had both, and some bettas are just absolutely amazing with great personalities, BUT, honey gourami’s are just way more peaceful and I personally love the way they hug other fish and feel all around with their feelers. I used to have a breeding pair and they were just so amazing.

Yall and KGTropicals inspired and educated me enough tog at my first tank. Started with a 29 gallon kit. Now I’m at a point where I’m about to build my first 6x8ft outdoor pond for my dad, and if it goes well, my uncle said he’d pay me to build him one. I have a little Honey Gourami as centerpiece in my 10gal with a school of Neon Tetras and Black Kuhli loaches. i call him either Honey or Sweetie. He's stayed only an inch long, while the Honey Gouramis in my other tank seem to have grown...I also have a Betta, my little bachelor in his own tank. Love them ! Thanks for this vid :)

I'm in the process of stocking my new 30 gallon community tank and was having this very debate in my head about a centerpiece fish, so for me, the timing of this video is impeccable! I'm for sure going with a couple of honeys now mainly because of the more varied tank mates. But I'm also going with a betta for my next tank as my five-year-old is quite smitten with them and their colors plus the small tank size is a huge plus.
On a side note, thanks for your terrific channel. Videos like yours have rekindled my love for aquariums (this new tank is my first in almost 20 years!) and my little girls and I are having a blast with me as we look after our new tank.

Well this like you jumped in my head with this video! I just set up a 20L dirted/deep substrate tank - was originally planning a betta and some sort of nano fish- Then while researching found Honey Gourami and ember tetra …and this video- . Wham! Looks like these for the win once I am cycled. Also- yup on the betta locking eyes- This is how I ended up with a female / and emergency purchase of a 5.5 gal tank….. the struggle is real. Love all the information in your videos…..

Honestly betta's have gotten very fragile. There's always something up with them, constipation, finrot, fungus, pop-eye, etc. The only way to avoid all this is if u can get them from a reputable breeder. For beginners I'd suggest honey gourami

Having kept both, I would have to go to team betta. Honeys are absolutely amazing regardless. I think a bettas personality and colours really put it a tiny bit ahead. Maybe I'm biased though since bettas got me into this hobby

There are actualy 3 collor variaties of honey gourami. There is also a wild type in which the females a dul gray orange-ish, but he males get bricht orange with a yellow dorsal fin with the face turing black blue-ish in breeding mode. Stunning little guys and they stay slightly smaller then the other two variaties.😊

  • @usmc72409
    @usmc72409 ปีที่แล้ว

I’d go with gourami but I’m partial to the flame dwarf or the electric blue. Even the powder blue is awesome. Bettas are awesome but depending on aggression u may not be able to keep in community. Based on color alone tho def the betta. My short tail is so friendly. My veil and rose tail both ended up in their own tank bc they are so mean to everyone else! My bettas are def more interactive with me then the gouramis are.
Sharp edges was a great point that Jason made. Bettas long flowing fins def tear super easy.

Sorry, Joanna, I have to side with Jason only about by 75% though. My honey gourami, Grammy, was so sweet and full of personality and she NEVER let 20 pellets fall to the bottom of the tank! "Charming" the beta is so clueless he will let food hit him in the face and then act like I didn't feed him! (cute though!) Thanks guys!

I currently have two male bettas a crown tail I’ve had for 2 years who has been living peacefully with 10 cherry barbs since November in a 25 gallon and a half moon I got just before Christmas in a five gallon who took a week to find his food if I didn’t drop it right in front of him 😂 love them both. names are pig (he ate super fast the day he came home) and dumbo because if I don’t make sure he sees exactly where the food is he can’t always find it… In the future I would love a pair of honeys tho!

In time I will probably get both - I think they're both great fish and plan on putting them in different environments that meet their personalities and needs.
This isn't relevant to the video but I wanted to share with you two some exciting news in my tanks. I talked a bit about this in the livestreams so you may remember. I picked up some gold H. formosa from Steve a while back but lost all of them except for 3 females due to a disease (You helped me treat it in a livestream - thank you for that!). I was pretty heartbroken as I loved these fish. I ended up adding some pygmy Corydoras as 3 h. formosa is a little sparse for a 10 gallon. Anyway, it's now about 3 months after the outbreak and I have H. Formosa fry again!!! I knew they could store milt, but without drops the last couple of months I thought they were done until I got some males. I'm guessing the heavier feedings due to the additional occupants signaled to them that it was time to reproduce again!

I've kept a betta before (a blue one, named him Vegeta because he was a bit feisty!) but I've never kept a gourami so if I had the chance to get another tank (been a while, housing limits) I'd try something new. Maybe with orange laser corys and a few green tetras. ❤😃

I couldn't decide 😅 I have an HMPK betta in a 5 gallon and a young pair of honey gouramis in a 7 gallon. Once they grow up a bit they'll graduate to my 50 gallon community tank which has one adult honey gourami already! Hmm, I guess in terms of numbers I am a little more on the side of honey gouramis 😂, but I absolutely love my Betta's spunky personality 😁

Honestly it's a tough choice to make but I suppose it depends on what on is looking for
Bettas have lots of color and personality, don't require much space, and they're readily available, so they're great for beginners and those looking for a little wet pet to keep in their office or bedroom
Honey gouramis, meanwhile, are less likely to give you issues if you're looking for a centerpiece fish for a stress-free community tank

  • @connordawson5567
    @connordawson5567 ปีที่แล้ว

So being completely honest Joanna raises multiple good points but in my opinion it’s really circumstantial. If you have a community tank (like me) or plan on keeping multiple fish gourami is the way to go however, for a singular fish beta would be the way to go. Personally I’m team gourami but I’ve never owned a beta so I can’t speak from experience.

What center fishdo you recommend to a nano of 15-16 gal with 10 nano fishes (ember tetras+gobies) and shrimps? I used to have a pair of dwarf gouramis but they hunted the baby shrimp, I don't want that!

I kept a Betta for a while in an office tank. He was good for a while but got sick after a while. I don't think I'll do a betta again, I think I'm better at maintaining and enjoying just one tank in the living room … but that living room tank does have room in it for a few honey gouramis. Maybe I'll make a trip to my local fish store.

After having lost two plakat bettas within the course of several months independently I now stick to honeys and macropods. Never more bettas. They seem die no matter how hard you try, and they literally broke my heart as charming as they were. Honeys are like marmalade in your tank and they last :-) Besides, they keep the tank algae free! Macropodes are amazing beautiful robust fish, intelectual and fun, reminds of betta in this respect without its poor health. My go all together without problem.

For me it depends on what you mean by "Betta"- If you are talking all species of Betta & not a just B. Splendens, then I'd pick Betta Coccina over Honey Gourami! I get the best of both that way- B. Coccina are more social than B. Splendens so can be kept in groups & they also come in a lovely red colouring with metallic blue or green sides or flank spot, it also rims & extends into their fins, they also have the coolest sapphire blue partial eye rings which gives them a super adorable grumpy expression.
If you are talking splendens vs honey gourami, then it's a tie for me- I love blue or purple crown tail or plakat splendens just as much as I love gold or wild type honey gourami... So both lol.

The biggest problem that I've encountered with Bettas is that they can be more of a hassle to feed, especially in a community tank. Some Bettas will not eat unless the food is placed directly in front of them. Some days I just want to throw some food in and walk away and not worry about it. That's not an option for some Bettas.

I love both betta and honeys. However, I've had three bettas in the past three years.... all expired. They seem fine and dandy for a while, and all of the sudden, there they are lying on their little backs in the substrate. (sad face).
Now, I can't say I've had the greatest luck with Honeys, either (but better luck). I have a couple male Honeys in my 29 right now, and they've been there for six months which is the longest period of time I've had one survive. They still seem to be thriving for the time-being.
I did get sunset gourami twice. Both times they were sick with something... gasping at the top of the quarantine tank for air, and not just a little bit. Maybe gill flukes? Not sure but i searched all over TH-cam to see if i could find information. Nope! Prazi-pro didn't help them and that was the only thing I could think to give them. I was devastated! Those were the prettiest little guys!
Please keep your fingers crossed for my Honeys, Mutt and Jeff! Thank you for today's video too. (and for being here so I can complain about my poor little fish!

having kept an oscar i dont find bettas to be nearly as water puppy as them. i do still prefer betta over honey gourami but i also prefer the full sized gouramis better anyways. if im gonna center piece a small tank gotta go betta. currently have a black orchid wanna say rosetail. thinking of breeding to see what kinda lil monsters i can produce.

How could you forget price? LoL HGs are less than $10. The Bettas mentioned can cost upwards of $40, plus shipping. Some are in the $100 range!

bettas all the way. but honeys are good too because of the wide range of tank mate options they offer compared to bettas

In my experience my bettas CANNOT stand any tanks mates that aren’t shrimp or snails. I recently purchased a Honey and she’s doing just fine with mates

So basically the argument is honey gouramis are Hardy/versatile and cute.... but bettas are so pretty? XD

I do not know if you are aware of this, but you have two different species of gouramis there. One is colisa chuna and the other one (the first one seen in the video) is a Colisa labiosa. I do not know why so many people are wrong about this and think it is the same fish, calling the Labiosa the "Red form" of the honey gourami.

I love them both. However, with all the discussion about health issues, the betta I rescued has lived while I've had two honey gouramis die only after a few months. Go figure!

Honey gourami is cheaper than the betta.
I have betta and blue ram. They are both intelligent but betta is slightly smarter I think.
I also want gourami but I can’t take care of many fish maybe someday

I’ve had fish since 1977. I have had 2 Betta in the past. They took food from my hand. They are beauties, very personable. I now have a36 gallon bow front. I have my first single male Honey Gourami. Only had him for 4 months. I named him Mycroft. I have to see what the difference is. He so far is not as shy as some have mentioned. A lot braver and personable than the 2 powder blue gourami I had years ago in my 30 long. I do have a lot of live plants a few rocks and a piece of driftwood. I have hard water so I mix 1/2 and 1/2 reverse osmosis and tap water with Water conditioner when I do my water changes. My tank had been running for 3 years when I introduced the gourami. I have a group of 7 green neons, a group of 5 black neons, 5 gold white mountain minnows, 3 standard colour white mountain minnows. 11 Pygmy Cory’s. , 2 bronze Cory’s. We will see in time whos side I’m on. I still want another Betta. Not enough time to maintain two tanks. I have a husband, a cat and a dog to take care of. Plants and the rest of life. The trouble with this hobby is you want a LOT of different fish. 😅 I’ll let you know how things work out. I’m in the Midwest Indiana. I’ve not been able to get two female honeys to keep Mycroft company. My local fish shop might be able to order them . After I quarantine them . I’ll take Mycroft out and house him in my quarantine tank , with water from the 36 gallon . Put the females in the 36. Give them a couple of days to settle, then add Mycroft back in. I’ll move a few rocks around and move some plants. I think it will be safer than introducing the females to Mycroft’s territory. Any thoughts on this ? I’d be grateful for your time. Thank you

The cost of diversity in betta breeds is high. I’d rather stay with the natural colours of a honey gourami

I have to agree with Jason and go with the Honey Gourami. I have a betta and I have to say he is kind of boring to watch. Don’t get me wrong, he gets the best care, he just boring until it’s feeding time. 😅

Whilst bettas aren't that healthy, it's another story for me. Had owned 10 HGs, all 10 died from a same disease where they'll swim erratically, almost like neurological damage and died like that. I've 2 bettas now and they're doing well.
Guess it depends on the location you're from.

The wild type honey gourami is so beautiful. I have gold, wild type and a lovely female betta (in her own tank). I haven't enjoyed the health issues that sometimes come with bettas. In my experience my honey was not happy alone, so if solo centerpiece fish I'd say a Betta.
