    I think sweet potato leaves they might like. Kind of like spinach, quite high in potassium, magnesium, calcium and phosphorus. It gets a bit slimey so it might be like what they're into.

    Just fed me red and black neo tanks with a ripeish banana, that actually sunk and they are all over it, absolutely enjoying it by the look of it. Also I have tried potato peel with some potato on it (obviously) microwaved in a little water, and it sunk and the shrimp seemed to have liked it, they were at it for 2-3 days until only the thin brown skin remained. (might be good for biofilm if it stays in tank)
    Would love to see a video about it!
    Thanks

  • @pressuredprepper4232

    I use banana leaf bowls that are used for steaming and cooking.. I soak these in Bactrim AE and for 7-10 days before I need to be gone .. They do grow a great film on them. They are also great for feeding your shrimp inside..If you have problems with them moving from the water just add a small rock to the inside of the bowl. They are not large and perfect for feeding daily feedings until they start breaking apart which is actually several weeks.. They are 100 percent all banana leaves even the ties that hold them together.. I thought you might mention this on one of your vids.. I plan to do a vid on them before I go on vacation..

    • @sopigmented3012
      @sopigmented3012 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope you enjoy the cherry as much as I have, and mine have been bomb proof! Originally got shrimp to put in a little planted tank with neon tetras thinking to breed them as fish treats for my other tanks, but, not a single shrimp became food lol. They are too awesome!
      Not because I am mean but because of lack of info at the time, I did so many 'wrong' things and my shrimp thrived...so much so that the same colony of cherry shrimp are alive and well today (just a whole lot more of them and multiple tanks lol).
      I never checked anything (didnt know I was meant to), temp has varied over the years depending if had anything else in with the shrimp but usually about 24-26degC, usually at least java moss and various substrates and use Prime for treating tap water...thats it! Feed has varied too. I either have been super lucky or the cherry are tougher lot here in Australia lol or these shrimp are not as fragile as people think.
      Ive even had heaters fail, filters fail and worst was my cat vomit in one of the tanks (no joke, this happened!)...and...they survive! (except for a few I didnt see and were still in the gross vomit tank :( ). Not just survive but they have continue to breed like rabbits so they must be happy enough (kept having to get more tanks lol). Ive also moved house and diff water supply and they still happy!
      BTW, its been about six years since got my first shrimp and at some point bought a few as I thought it might help with the gene pool (dont know if it made any difference tbh). Other than that, the easiest pets Ive ever had!

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

      I am drying banana skins as we speak to add small pieces in the tank ,they are breeding grounds for micro fauna.:)

    • @Quint1975
      @Quint1975 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marks Shrimp Tanks is it just a case of rinsing in water first Mark? I always bought mine dried already. They do look ideal as grazing material. I wonder if any other fruit or veg skins could be used, although would there not be a problem with potential decay and turning the water?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to just soak them to get rid of the tannins but it turns out there is more benefit to leaving them long for biofilm to grow ..Banana skin ect will grow mold and fungus I know that for sure ..you can also do diy penicillin if you really had to from mold of orange skins ,the mold might give you an upset stomach and the runs but it could save your life if you have an infection of some sort lol

    • @Quint1975
      @Quint1975 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marks Shrimp Tanks so do you just clean the skins thoroughly under water to take any excess fruit pulp off then immerse in powdered bacteria water? lol that's what you did in your vid.. that does make sense. how about drying the skins once they've "fermented" for a few days? I'm trying to think of away to store. the film would die off but wouldn't the process kick in again once immersed?

    Shrimp vs. avocado shell.
    My otocinclus, guppies and snails loved the wee bit of avocado that was left in the shell and I wonder if shrimp would like it, too.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldnt even try it ,its toxic to most animal so its a no go for me I am afraid.

    • @casmarykay8433
      @casmarykay8433 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, I have to admit I went into a bit of a panic reading that avocado is toxic to most pets and had to do some research! I have learned a lot! Most notably that squirrels in Florida would riot if not allowed to eat it! :D Apparently, they are smart enough to strip off the skin and throw away the pits. (Also, that they like strawberry margaritas!) thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?32720-Avocado-SKIN-and-PIT-are-toxic!/page2&s=2bd1e6936720982f0fd5b9b128f6b90b
      There really isn't any solid info about it's effects on shrimp or fish, but from my research I think perhaps I should avoid giving them the shell, as it, the leaves, pit and bark are the parts containing the most persin.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avocado#Toxicity_to_animals
      So, Thanks for expanding my education! :D

      Hi ino your comment is old but no I wouldn't put mint in a tank, don't think it's safe, something to do with the oils in the plant.

    Hi Mark, when you say your shrimp go 'ravenous' over food, I get very jealous! I have a whole range of high quality food (benebachi, shrimp king etc.), but whenever I feed, only a few shrimp go for it and lose interest shortly after. I feed a tiny amount 3 times a week. Do you not feed for 1-2 weeks to get your shrimp to go crazy over food? Cheers.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The food question just depends on how many shrimp you have ,e.g in one tank I have well over 500 shrimp and If I dont feed them every day they will start to eat each other ....in a tank where you only have 10 shrimp you might only have to feed once a week or maybe not at all. The best way to do is to put the food in and watch them if they are slow or just dont come for the food try the next day and the next day and so on :)

    Hi Mark! My name is also Mark, I am thinking of starting my own shrimp tank then later planting it and adding some small fish. How do you think I can start out. I actually just bought some ghost shrimp but they are in a small little cage with no filter for now. I also have a banana tree in my front yard, I could use the dried leaves as food?!

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Mark ,yes you can use the dried leaves in your tank shrimp love them ,just know though that In my opinion there are no shrimp safe fish ..they will eat any babys your ghost shrimp have so you should really choose shrimp or fish :)
