The reason why the green shell just broke is that somebody threw the shell against the wall on the left and then the shell came back and crashed in the red shell! Because of the wifi connection you saw the green shell slipping through the red shell, although it crashed in it :)

I honestly think that half of these triggering situations could be prevented by just driving right away after landing on the ground from being in the air, but instead they chose to charge up their mini-boost which doesn't do all that much when you aren't in motion, then someone with Bullet Bill comes by and knocks your right off that edge of road.
