I had a back surgery and other complications, totaling up $8,000, and that was a single incident about 4 years ago. We also need regular vaccinations, check ups, toothbrushing, grooming, feeding, washing, training, etc. Walking is a fun part of the dog AND owner’s exercise.

Dachshunds (longhaired or short) are generally barkers. We tend to be very protective and bark at outside noise. I like to bark at UPS and FedEx trucks. When I hear a stranger at the door, I'll bark until I scare them away.
I have dachsies for years now, several geneneration. When you train them correctly they don't bark more than other dogs. I have three now and I hardly ever hear them.
Sorry I missed your question from a while ago. Although normally, it's not recommended more than once a month, I get a bath every 2 or 3 weeks because of my skin allergies. I don't go to the groomers. I just get a brushing every few days and just some trimming of butt fur so it doesn't get in the way of doing my business.
Dear dachshund owners please prevent your dogs from jumping up and down off beds and furniture...they get spinal disc injuries easily... Also do yourself and your pet a favor and get a pet medical health insurance plan for the dog...Vets are extremely expensive these days...I got Trupanion Pet Ins. Fur Balls yes, my back was injured because of too much jumping down from the bed, sofa, and sometimes from the dining table.
