so I've been contemplating, getting a Korg monologue, and I've been binge-watching all the videos on this topic. but then I came across your videos and the fact that you have been replying to comments 3 years later is amazing. these are the type of people we need on youtube. good job man, keep it up.
I actually really like the Minilogue's VCOs - certainly appreciate having two matching ones. For me, the biggest improvement, sonically speaking, on the Monologue is the sound of the filter, I'd love hear that swapped out into the Minilogue! Thanks for watching!
+DrBuffaloBalls once you open up to the possibilities the motion sequencer offers it really is a creative tool unto itself. Thanks for checking out the video!
Just picked one of these up today as my first synth. Been having loads of fun, but I have a lot to learn about how to properly use it. Your videos are great and definitely answering questions, and opening my eyes to how much can be done on the monologue.
+5ch3nk you picked a great first synth, welcome to a lifetime of cool sounds! Keep an eye on the channel in the next few weeks when I start my series on the Korg Volca FM - that might make a compelling argument for synth number 2!
Thank you! I really love using the Monologue in this role. If you want to hear it in context, check out a song called 'The Overlapped' on my channel (that song is 100 percent Monologue) and my January 2018 jam no. 24 where I layer it live with some other cool stuff! Thanks for watching!
Oscillator Sink your comment came in as I was listening to "The Overlapped" - great sounds, really interesting low end motion and countermelodies, and overall an engaging tune! Nice!!
Haha, thanks - I love making non drum synths be a drum machine! I've done another more recently with the DeepMind as well, which I think comes out even cooler!
Thanks for the tip!!! I will most definately do that! I bought the second Monologue to combine that with the Volca Kick to make one drum machine and i use the other Monologue for basslines and other things and the Minilogue for leads.
Can you recommend me a good mixer to run multiple analog synths? i currently only have a Maschine MK3 that has inputs only for one stereo synth. I have no idea what i need for a live setup and in the studio to run multiple synths..
Thanks guy, I just bought a blue monologue and was wondering how to do motion sequencing per step. Thanks for making this video. It answered my question.
11:50 Actually I think this is exáctly the kind of stuff Tatsuya wanted us to do with this synth. But yeah it's not your typical synth programming and that definitely makes it much cooler and more rewarding when you get a nice bassline and drum beat out of a mono synth. I think you would like the Mono Station, you can do very similar things with it, but with more lanes of automation. I slightly prefer the MonoLogues sound though.
Loved your video mate. It adds a very cool texture to another beat. So far spent hours messing around with it. Thanks for the time and effort you put into your vids. Big love
Really glad you're having fun with it. Don't know quite when, but there'll be another video related to this in the coming weeks so keep an eye on the channel!
Holy crap this blew my mind. I ordered one earlier today and stumbled across your tutorials, top notch stuff! I bet Korg didn't even know this little guy's potential. xD
I hope you enjoy your new synth! If the drum stuff interests you, since doing this tutorial, I actually made an official (and free!) pack of drum loop patches for the Monologue for Korg - so they certainly know about it now! Hi I know I'm late to the party but I have just got one of these and love it and your videos. Could you tell me how you get a metronome sound as I just get the flashing lights on the step sequencer? Cheers man thnx so muchly
Something that has worked really well for me is to download all the manuals for synths I own (and some I don't) and stick them on Google drive so that I can access them wherever I am and quickly do searches (which is what I just did to answer your question).
@@OscillatorSink Thank you man I have just taken your advice and got a copy of the manual and can see what you mean. Sorry I bothered you I should of looked. Once again man thanks so much. This thing is incredible, I cant wait till I actually understand what I'm doing!
@@OscillatorSink I have an old fostex x-18 4 track and have seen people making short tape loops and creating sound on sound recordings on each channel and fading them in and out using the x18. Have you done anything along those lines?
+ldb its a tremendously deep synth when you dive beneath the circuit. If you want to hear a lot of these techniques all at once check out my video called "The Overlapped" to hear the Monologue doing a bunch of interesting stuff. Thanks for watching!
Fuckin deep man. Really cool & really well explained. You're right to say it wont replace my drum machine, due to the long parameter set up, but great to know the process. Maybe just having a kick or hats only is a quicker option. And the wee tricks at the end for drops and changes are spoiling us. Love
Question: After performing Korg's firmware update, I started playing with it and for the first time noticed that when I turn down all oscillators out of the mix, theres a hidden white noise oscillation at a very low volume. This is on all patches. I can filter it and put it through motion sequence. It's kind of cool actually, but I can't tell if this is intentional, to add grit to the sound or is this a qlitch? Somehow I've never noticed it before. Is it just my synth? I'm finding cool ways to utilize this 3rd / 4th "secret white noise oscillator", but what the heck?
Audio circuits have noise (or pick up noise from the environment). You might find that noise changes in volume depending on the power source/your location/what the synth is plugged in to (including whether the usb is connected)... If you can use that creatively, then more power to you! If you want a more "reliable" noise source, try plugging a detuned radio receiver into the audio input.
@@OscillatorSink thank you so much for such a quick reply. I know what you're saying, but this isn't an AC buzz. This is an actual white noise oscillation (pre Filter). You can motion sequence it, filter etc. the way wou would with a fourth oscillator. If you have a second - just try it, with your head phones. Turned Down Resonance, Osc. 1 +2. Turn up the volume ... and you just might hear it. It's fairly loud. A full on White (or Pink) noise oscillator. I'm so curious if this is an intended part of the synth - sound design?
It just sounds like either self noise inherent in the circuit, or the noise generator (from the second oscillator) bleeding into the circuit. It's unlikely to be intentional. My Monologue is packed away, but I wouldn't be surprised if it exhibited this effect too, and it may well still be affected by power/location/interference.
great tutorials! as you'r pretty in deep with the monol i've a few questions for you: 1. have you found a trick to get a kind of "sustain" or "latch" (as on the bass station2) or something that keep one note always playing? this without using the sequencer in some way.. 2. slavin the monol to ableton, can you set that it could AND not read message to activate the sequencer? (this i saw a lot of people asking around..) however, great tutorials!
+Marco Germini music hey, thanks for watching. As for your questions: 1. No. Not without using some tape to hold down the key! 2. In the global settings (4th light along I think) there's a setting something like "En Rx Transport" - turn that off and the Monologue will ignore the MMC messages that would otherwise start the sequencer. Hope that helps!
I have a few patches where i can hit the key once and the wave keeps going without holding the key but im not sure how i did it but i figured id tell you its possible if thats what you were asking
CC question. The switches respond to 1,127 but there are only 3 values (up, middle, down). Do you know the values for up, middle, and down? The manual doesn't say!
+Electronic Musician very good question, but I don't know the answer. I guess the easiest way to find out is to plug it into your daw and start recording and just flick them? I'd guess 1, 63 and 127 will be the values, but that's just a guess.... If I get a chance over the next few days, I'll check and get back to you.
its usually one of two options: divisions of 3, so 0-42, 43-83, 84-127. So 1, 63, and 127 would work. Some other synths use 0, 1, 2-127. Which is more annoying to map. note MIDI controller range is expressed 0-127 or 1-128, as there are 128 total discreet values.
Ok now I think it's all I needed to know to finally buy monologue except of how does the kick sound compare to other korg products like volca kick or monotribe. Do you have any reference? Really great video BTW.
+Łukasz Bieliz I've not owned the Volca Kick or Monologue, although I've been tempted by them a bunch of times. I know that the Volca kick uses a similar basic technique of filter modulation but has other layers to it which will make it a bigger (and more flexible) kick - but then, it's not able to do most of the other things the Monologue can do, so I guess that's the trade-off. That shouldn't put you off getting a Monologue though - it's a great little synth!
I think you could pull some of these same tricks yes, although it's my understanding that the sequencer isn't quite as comprehensive on the Miniologue - but sadly I don't have one so I haven't tried it out to be certain. If you have one, give it a go and let me know how you get on!
Original Minilogue doesn't have step motion sequencing like the monologue but the new minilogue xd does, including the drive and filter of the monologue I believe but not its oscillators.
I believe the filter on the XD is basically the same as the Prologue which is kinda somewhere between the original Minilogue and the Monologue - probably the best of both worlds and spot on for a polysynth!
