Too Good to Be True! The Real Value of Antiques & Vintage

  • That thing is fantastic! The best we've ever seen! But is it real?
    We answer those questions and many more in this video, where we look at real antiques, fun vintage items and family heirlooms presented us at the Saint Petersburg Garden Club appraisal fair in Florida, and talk about what they are, what they're not, and why people still value them after all these years!
    We go into these events with no idea what we might see, so I'm discovering them along with you and our live audience all at the same time. Did mastodons walk through Florida? Who really made that vase? Who had time to carve all that detail? There's puzzling questions we attempt to answer as we look at everything from Qing Dynasty porcelain to a Monaco sea life lamp in this fun review.
    We make some people's day in this video ($1000 for an item procured for free), break a few hearts (no, that plastic elephant is not a $300 soapstone carving) and give lots of info that our viewers and the owners of these great items can use alike as we look at our own collections and seek to grow them. Appraisal fairs are a great way to take a deeper dive into the world of antiques and collectibles, and we hope to see you at one of our events this year!

    We don’t have pennys I the United States. We have cents. Large cent, small cent, one cent. None of those coins are marked as a penny.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is absolutely true from a technical standpoint. However, "Indian Head Penny" is the common name most people in the USA use to describe those, so I used the colloquial term I felt would most understood by the audience at hand.

    • @jf56msk
      @jf56msk 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Of course most people call them pennys. I just find it a fun fact that they are actually cents. Most people just aren’t aware of that. I’m sure it’s because of the English penny that people in the US started calling them pennys.

    The American Hatpin Society states that the length of a hat pin was to do with the size of the hat!! Nothing about using them as weapons.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn't include the preface, where I told the audience that I would give them realistic current selling prices in their area, rather than insurance values or fair market value, or a price that might be achieved in a more expensive market. I hear other appraisers give lofty values that might be attainable by professional antique dealers in high-end markets, but most people do not have access to those customers because they are not professional dealers and they are not selling to a high-end clientele necessarily.
