I question anyone who calls themself a superhero fan but doesn't love the costume in this movie. I love how true to the spirit of Captain America the 1990 movie is.
The original cut has the first one, but not the second, and it happens very early, so doesn't feel as jarring as it does when it hilariously happens at 45 minutes in.
I'm really glad I watched this video. I've always been a fan of his, even seeing these lesser cuts of his movies. That being said, my appreciation of him has grown exponentially thanks to having had seen this. I will absolutely seek out more of his films and it will be because of how passionately you have presented his career. Thank you for taking the time to state the case for Albert Pyun being a great director.
I'm happy that he learned he had a fan following before he passed. He really did have a lot of unique visions, and I'm a bit sad he didn't get more opportunities with bigger budgets and a dedicated crew. Glad folks like you are still getting the word out Also had no idea about the original cut of Cyborg! Great!
wow, what a great post! I saw CA as a kid on TV and loved that movie, also a HUGE fan of Sword and Sorcerer and never knew about Albert or his work...read his Wikipedia page and saw he was an unsung artist...I hope he passed knowing his work was loved and appreciated. Now how on earth can fans get a viewing of the Pyun cut of CA??? You've got this fan wanting to see it!
I hope this can be released to the public. I do recall the quasi-director's cut a few years back which restored a pretty long sequence to the middle of the film. Albert Pyun was, at least, an ambitious B-movie director who tried to deliver results above his budget.
I remember reading interviews in Wizard or Comics Scene magazines with the actors. They certainly were describing Pyun's cut and not the Canon product, as you've shown. The piano scene in particular.
Intersting video... krass new informations for me, thank you. Got your book on my amazon list and will order it next month to check it out. Have a good holiday and christmas.
Fantastic video fellow Pyun fan! Love the RD references ❤ I am the person who unveiled the Japanese cut online years ago and through fellow lovers of his work, it has exploded online; even here on youtube. I am about to go back and retransfer that cut as I've upgraded my equipment to a higher level. Keep up the good work!
This was an excellent video. The original opening feels so similar to the 2011 MCU Capt America movie. I wish I had caught this on the Mind Melter, so I really hope this Albert Pyun cut gets released soon.
3:54 - That one was gonna be a disaster. It was burdened by the need to make it hyper-HYPER-economic. (No Eternia at all, all Earth action, Skeletor posing as a CEO) 8[
I always thought there was something special about this film. Everyone else was laughing, but I thought it has a lot of good things in it! So this doesn't surprise me at all, but I'm happy to be finally vindicated.
This is very informal, thank you for this breakdown of Albert ‘s original Captain America Cut,. Man.. this needs to be available to the fans.. same way Slinger was finally released, perhaps as a special two disc Blu-ray.
I am legitimately more excited about this than another Superman film. Growing up in an odd time of live action superhero highs (Donner's Superman, Burton's Batman, Bixby Hulk), lows (Hammond Spider-Man, Dolph's Punisher), underrated (Baldwin's Shadow, Campbell's Rocketeer) and unreleased (Corman's Fantastic Four), I took what I could get. I have great fondness for this film and seeing a recut/extended version would be amazing. Also, great video!
Whoa! Who is this on my TH-cam recommendations talking about this cut? Justin just screened it! It's catching on like wildfire. Oh yeah, wait, this is Justin's channel. 😂
I saw the original one back when I was a kid. I liked it better than the cannon Punisher movie. I hope that this version of Captain America is released publicly someday.
I purchased your book about Albert Pyun a year or so ago on Amazon. I didn't know you also had a youtube channel. I'm looking forward to watching more videos 👍👍
Ok, you sold me, and I’ve never even heard of this film before. But I have seen Vicious Lips, which is absolutely insane. I saw Cyborg in the theatre when it came out, but now I wanna see the director’s cut, dammit! I really hope this original cut of Captain America can be released on Blu somehow.
I remember watching Captain America when I was 8, and I liked it . Even as an adult ,the theatrical version has so bad it's good quality to it . Seeing how producers and directors screwed over Albert Pyun and that Pyun got the blame for their misfortunes is heartbreaking . Pyun clearly had a passion for doing Captain America , and that passion should have been nurtured. Instead, production cut his legs out from under him with what they thought would make more money . Good video 👍
Yea, we are pretty sure a lot of it is from that and the movie BLOOD MATCH, but like I say, while not that exact music, it would be fairly similar in intent.
@@filmtrap Yeah don't get me wrong while Kickboxer 4 is an atrocious film one thing it does have going for it is the music as Tony Riparetti clearly always knows what he is doing when it comes to scoring films. Also I must say great video did not expect to hear such an emotional and moving story behind this cut of the film once again rest in power to Albert Pyun his story was one of perseverance and commitment to his dream of being a filmmaker
It was great. Would have loved more subsequent marvel movies to be more like this. The Italian setting and gangsters were cool, the red skull was creepy and threatening. Bit of cheese but it is a superhero film. It introduced me to Chopin's hauntingly beautiful, rain-drop prelude, which is used to trigger a memory of Red skull's childhood. More grounded with red skull's daughter and friends being cold blooded. Unsettling to see Sharon's mother be zipped up in a body bag. Great performances. Much more believable than the cgi filled, one liner formula of the mcu, Chris Evans version.
Ronny Cox once said it was the best script he ever read. I think some of the other cast also praised the script. I used to rent this movie all the time as a kid (have it on Blu-ray now). I really appreciate your enthusiasm!
I never here about Albert Pyun, and this was a rly good introduction on him gonna look more about him, his filmography and, mostly, Radioactive Dreams, as a big Mad Max fan, that sounds awesome
I loved this movie as a kid and of all the 80s and 90s era superhero movies it was actually the most true to the comics origin and appearance of the main hero and villain. And I frankly enjoyed the hitchhiking , on his own against everybody Cap. There are shades of it even in Winter Soldier.
I was also skeptical about this, mainly because it's known they just didn't have the money to shoot and I thought there couldn't be much more material to change the film. But it seems it is so. It's one of the higher profile Pyun films I like less, so it's nice to know that. Also, please, RADIOACTIVE DREAMS IN HIGH DEF, PLEASE. (Also, Knights, very underrated)
Every 5 years or so I try to like this movie, its not very memorable but it def had potential unlike the Lundgren Punisher which just keeps getting better every time I watch it!
May I please have access to this edit of the film you sourced your clips from? I’m a major fan of this movie and can tell you a whole story about how it saved my life. Would greatly appreciate your help on this.
Yeah but if it wasn't for that theatre cut montage I'd have never heard of that Southside Johnny song which was never released anywhere else. I wish to god someone would would physically release that song.
Would love to see this cut, but you've sold me on Pyun in general - going to have to track down some of those movies ASAP. It goes to show that it's not just talent but a lot of luck and a lot of support from the powers-that-be. I'm sure there's a universe out there where Pyun was able to parlay his passion and success into bigger and better things, where he was able to beat the odds and overcome that hurdle and get the support and budgets he deserved... but god bless him for grinding it out even when he didn't get that.
I feel like Albert got such a bad wrap but i have so much respect for him especially as Asian American, there are not many film makers i can readily look to as auteurs or visionary in their own way. It’s still so impressive what he was able to do. The executives and corporate side of film making didn’t understand him. He was a film geek and paved the way for so many other people like Kevin smith to have a career. I have no doubt that if he was coming up in the early 2000s we would see him directing films or even shorts in things like love death and robots. I am ordering your book because I’d love to learn more about Pyun and his work
If you read the Stan's soapbox columns from the time, he talked about how "we're going back to Romania to make it even more exciting. ". I didn't fall for it back then, I still love this movie and all of its crapulence
This one sounds like a good movie. Or at least a better one. I did like the version that came out back in the day, but I saw it on TV and movie channels so that might be why I like it.
Albert Pyun has been played dirty loads of times. Just watch the different versions for Cyborg/Slinger - complete different movies with a different pacing and narrative. If Albert would have been granted a bigger budget for his movies, we would have gotten even better movies for sure. One example would be "Mean Guns" ´. I know that many people didn't like but i love that movie. Listening to Mambo while people kill each other was something different to me.
@@filmtrap I've just never heard anyone call this movie awful. I think most people would say the Lungdren Punisher (which I think is pretty solid if I do say so myself.)
You seem very passionate about Albert Pyun and are sympathetic of his plight. 4.5 stars though? Were these flashbacks and order of scenes actually in the original screenplay? I know from experience how edits, scene order, & cuts can damage story and tone, or also help remove some of the mistakes. I am interested to maybe see some of this, at least the ending you imaged on X. Is there a private way to view this or at least the ending? Thanks. 👍
Pyun always seemed like a modern day geek filmmaker trapped in an era of boomer movie executives.
I question anyone who calls themself a superhero fan but doesn't love the costume in this movie. I love how true to the spirit of Captain America the 1990 movie is.
I hate the rubber ears, but besides that, it looks top notch. I always wanted to have a suit like that!

If it doesn't include Rogers faking car sickness to steal a car from an old man and again to abandon his girlfriend in Italy, I don't want to see it.

I have consistently defended this movie since 1990

Pyun's cyborg has better cinematography, camera work and action than most big budget films made today.
That juxtaposition between music with the low-rent Randy Newman had me dying at 19:33

the only thing I had trouble with the Captain America film was the red skull was a Italian, I even got the film on DVD.

Anyway to see this new cut of the film? I saw it too. It had some good ideas but it was bad. I can't really see how to make this turd of a film epic
There is no universe in which this film, no matter the cut, will be good lol.
The worst superhero film? The assault on the nazi camp is pretty good for the time. Batman and Robin is way worst.
It is mawngaw, not as you pronounced it (it is NOT mang as in "hang").
