The top of that tree looks horrible after
I think they pruned out the leader to try control the size
Key is timing. If trim hard after mid-summer to fall, gonna expose to winter freeze and thaw that will damage it. Lightly like he’s done in the Spring after not more chance of freezing is best.

How is it now. I think it's dead because you're not supposed to cut the top because that's how it grows
Blue spruce no belong next to house or pruned.
Another reason to ask an arborist to work in your trees and a landscaper to work on your lawn. 😢 That tree will not grow naturally anymore.

In their credit the top was quite tall to reach. But yeah they should have kept a central leader.

What was used to trim the tree? Hedge trimmer?
I used pole saw for bigger branches and hedge trimmer for small branches.
