Thank you for sharing. If you’re looking for other topics, I would really appreciate a video on leather sheaths finishes - resolene , tan coat, wax, etc. how and when to apply. I feel like this really comes with experience and not many of the TH-camrs have that.

The Manila folders, the craft ruler, drilling holes for stitchup,seems like a good idea,might have to get myself a dremel drillpress! the attention to detail throughout the whole process is very inspiring, so glad I found your channel..

Do you mainly work in leather?, I am a retired carpennter/ cabinetmaker, since I've retired I have learnt to make bows(as in bows n arrows) knives and the leather sheaths, most of it I have learnt from Utube. There is some very good content on all these crafts but I have learnt to sift through and pick out the gems, for me. your tutorials fall into that category, keep up the good work, you have the rare gift of passing on knowledge..
I sincerely appreciate that Mike, honestly I do. It’s this kind of banter that I enjoy and welcome. My primary craft is leather but have always wanted to work with wood as there are alot of projects I’d build molds for forming leather. If we were neighbors I’d be over pestering you too much😂
One idea: list suppliers where can we get the rivets, leather ,tools, rulers etc. Overall: Excellent

Thank you Frank for the positive review. If the sheath is going to be wet molded I usually wait till it’s all done including molding. Then I’ll either dip dye or airbrush. Otherwise you can dye each piece before the actual fabrication starts. My favorite method is to airbrush after it’s done. Thanks for watching

Great video and nice looking sheath. I wish you would have shown more about the dangler option. I have made a few simple sheaths, but never one with a dangler. But beautiful work, nonetheless.

Thank you for this. Made my first sheath like this today. My knives are curved down from handle to the blade which brings in a few issues with the knofe not being sloppy in the sheath. All in all, it turned out good I think!
Sorry for the late response JWoodward The drop point bladed knife youre describing would require a split toe or butterfly style pouch sheath. I'm slowly finishing up a home renovation and will put together a YT video demonstrating that.

Great video! I wish you had shown how you create the matching stitching holes through the welt and the backside if the sheath. This is the part where sheath making goes wrong for me.
Thanks Emery On volume 1 Knife Sheath School I show the use of the dremel drill press method Otherwise using a diamond point awl which takes practice or machine sewn. I will do one on a pouch sheath with added belt loop and I’ll show how I do it on that episode

Hi Viktor, at last someone has shown us how to make a lovely leather sheath. I have always struggled with dimensions, but thanks to you I have a much better idea about how to go about constructing a sheath. I note that you dont case harden the leather with water, is that for any particular reason or just choice. I am not keen on the remnant pencil loine left around the stitching i think this distracts the eye from the stitching itself, which by the way is excellent. Is there any way of doing this without leaving a line ? I look forward to looking at your other videos. Thank you for sharing., regards

First of all thanks so much for the kind words Andy I appreciate the banter and find all your points valid. I agree the line is distracting but I did it deeper with pencil to see the concept. I usually do the line very lightly and then erase or use it as a guide for a border stamp. Casing I understand but not clear on case hardening Thanks again for the comments
Hi Vktor, I wet the leatherbefore I do any work on it, let it dry then start working it. It gives the leather a harder feel. its not always what people want but if I dont wet it before i work on it i wet it when its finished then mold the leather around the knife. Once dried the leather becomes hard and stays in shape. Im sure you knew this already but wanted to share ideas if it helps. Look forward to your next video. Best regards

Hello and Thank you John. The dangler gives the wearer an option in how it’s carried. Without the dangler strap, the sheath is belted tighter against the waist. If the user wants easier access to the knife, the dangler allows the sheath to swivel left, right and out. Example wearing the sheath belted outside a jacket or wearing gloves it just makes getting it easier

thanks for your guides Viktor, you demystify most of the process. Why space out 3/8ths an inch? Is it just to give you forgiveness space for your foldover? Does the line offset become smaller when using different weights of leather? I've already made some successful sheaths but I had to really adjust my welts after the fact to (barely) get them to fit
Thank You for the kind words! There is alot of precision guesswork 😂 in sheathwork and I try to minimize that by those measurements. You are correct Those measurements try to take into consideration the weight Leather(fold over) used I use 3/8 for 8/10 oz and less for 7/8 oz I will add that many mistakes have helped me fine tune the process but there is still a small percentage of failure. Knife sheaths are thee most challenging leather projects because of soo many variables i.e., handle shape, thickness, blade shape etc etc Thanks for the banter my friend and best of luck in your leatherwork journey
@@viktorgeorge9144 thanks. I'd been tuning and offsetting by eye and I've definitely wasted a few sheaths' worth of leather, while having a few successes too. I've found a few things irritating but yes the taco sheaths can very easily be too tight. Unfortunately I'm a perfectionist so I'm trying to use as little material as possible while having a reasonable welt.

Nice work, what’s your method of going through the welt and back side of the sheath on your stitches?
Thank you Don! Sewing thru a thick welt is challenging for sure. I use a dremel drill press with a 1/16th” bit for hand sewing thru a thick welt. Check out my Knife Sheath School (first in this series) and I demonstrate how I do that. You can also use a diamond tip awl, but that takes some practice to master. Hope that helps

Hey George I have a follow up question here. How do you account for a knife with a thick handle? or is everything based off of the 3/8th off of center line? Any insight would be very helpful. Thank you kind sir!
Hello Frankie and seriously thank you for all the kind words Depending on the thickness of the handle you might have to add an additional layer on the welt near the throat of the sheath. Stacking so to speak and tapering the welt You could also add more than 3/8” off the center line for a fatter handle. It’s all part of the fitting process to insure the knife is compressed in the pouch for a snug fit I’ve been busy on other projects but it think I’ll add this welt stacking to a future video Hope it’s helpful my friend

One question if I may. I have a knife with a guard on the top and bottom of the knife not just the bottom like the knife in your video. Do I still trace with the blade against the 3/8th" line in the middle or trace it with the guard against the line and the blade that additional distance away from that line?
Or do I angle it to have the tip and the guard against the line?
If I understand your description of the knife it sounds like it would require a scabbard type sheath versus this fold over. The introduction to knife sheath school video and volume one cover a scabbard sheath. Vol 1 has a magnetic retention however just ignore that part as the scabbard design alone will work Hope I understood correctly
Yes you did. I wondered about if the scabbard type would be better but the customer requested a foldover. Maybe I'll keep the guard above the top and put in a retention strap to hold it in.
