      @@cziegle3794 gathering to the feed dogs the way the foot tension works it would push the gathering out and make it uneven. She showed it when she added the skirt to the waist band.

    I am glad to see someone else whose body is in a constant state of flux. I find it so difficult to sew things that fit, because my stomach balloons out depending on when and what I last fed it. The elastic in the back of that waistband looks really cozy.

    That turned out so cute! I love the color too. Sunflowers are my favorite flower. Now I want my own sunflower field to go running throw for my own cottage core vibes.
    I swear we must be on the same wave length or something. Because I was just thinking about making am apron dress with a pattern I got from one of the ladies in the history bounding group on FB. I've been wanting an apron for working out in the garden and collecting eggs from the hen house for a while. I even dyed some heavy weight linen I've had from my stash for the job. Only the aquamarine turned out to be more teal than the bottle showed. I was thinking I was just going to try adding some more blue, but now I thinking I'm just going to roll with it. I might want to turn it into the apron dress I've been think about making. If in have enough to make it as long I want it to be. 😉

  • @withmyhandsdream

    We match! It was so similar to the dress I made a video out of a few weeks ago, but then I watched the video and saw the differences. A simple gathered and rectangular skirt would have worked much better for me as well. Adding a ruffle to a circle skirt took an enormous amount of fabric! I think that I, too, should start adding in that elastic. My waistbands fit in the morning but most of tjem feel too tight in the evening.

    Your videos make me miss my poor dear sewing machine (its name is Felicity, yes I named it I was 17 when I got it.) which has been sitting in storage for a long long time unfortunately since I wasn't able to have it out at my last couple living situations and now with my eyes getting worse (mysterious eye problems that are just now being addressed that I have had since I was little are not fun) I may not be able to sew by machine at least until I am diagnosed. I learned to hand stitch when I was about 5 or 6 (and was in love with the Martha Stewart show) and I learned to machine sew at 17 by way of a Christmas/birthday gift of lessons and a sewing machine from my loving grandparents. (my nana is the one that taught me to hand sew.)

      @@lillyh3447 thank you. I'm half tempted to ask for help shipping it to my brother's house in Texas (where I'm living) from my hometown in Oregon but it'd cost a lot and my older brother quit his long haul job. He brought a box to me it was free but took 6 months. So we'll see. I may re-home her. She deserves more than to be in her original box stuck in a crappy storage shed. Luckily I have family that could probably use it.

    I like how you make some complicated projects that are perhaps a tad too ambitious for many of us - but also make something like this where I'm like "yeah, I could make something on that level". Just a shame I don't look as good in a dress as you do - and that my current project of a light linen button-up shirt will now obviously not be for summer 2021... But hey; it'll look good in summer 2022, right?
    Anyway, even though I can't get any direct inspiration from you I can definitely get some indirect inspiration. And now I really ought to tackle that collar, even though it scares me.

I've figured out how to get a short-sleeved shirt out of 1 metre! 1.5 metres works way better though.

    Super beginner friendly, love it 😻 you said you used a serger to finish off the edge after you sewed the ruffles to the skirt panel. I don’t have a serger. How could I finish off the edges and not have it bulky?

    • @susanhillis5952
      @susanhillis5952 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A zigzag stitch works pretty well for most fabrics. Some fancier machines have a stitch called overcast that would work too

    • @TearsBehindSmiles
      @TearsBehindSmiles 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are “overlock” presser feet you can buy that help you achieve the same effect as a serger with a normal sewing machine. I just got a new machine that came with one and it works great! If you don’t want to buy a new foot, though, you can set your machine to a zigzag stitch and line up your fabric so that the right side of your zigzag falls off of the edge of the fabric, thus encasing the raw edge and preventing fraying. It takes a little more diligence than the foot, as the foot has a little plate that you put the fabric against so you don’t have to do it by eye, but it’s totally possible. I used to do this all the time before I had the foot.
