    Pockets are a much-needed addition to modern clothes. My 2-year-old has already realised the travesty that is poor pocket storage and is not shy in telling me when I mess up and provide pocketless clothes for her! (Where is she expected to keep her cuddly toy bunny and her "phone" aka dead online banking card reader?)
    I think I'll make her an apron with big pockets as a Christmas gift, so she always has bunny/phone/snack storage no matter the outfit she wears.

    You truly have a very good "hand" when it comes to handwork. My mother trained as a seamstress for a time in the "old country". She taught me a lot! She had a beautiful "hand", too; but I was always anxious to hem a skirt I made. The hand stitches started neat, and with precision. By the time I finished, the stitches became basting stitches! I'm sorry but I was incredibly distracted by the nail polish color in this video: it suits you very well!!! The skirt looks gorgeous and durable, I shall look into this worsted wool fabric in the future (I wonder if it could be used for a 1890s frock coat, or if the texture is too rough). It was sometimes hard to tell how the stitches looked because of the white balance in the shots where it was mostly the fabric on screen, but it might also be my computer (and I'm sure black fabric and diaphanous white light don't like to work together). Nonetheless, this was a lovely and informative video and inspires me to find some free time to sew again.

    I'm not the kind of person whose into sewing or quilting, but my mom was. She made blankets years ago for kids who had none (part of a non-profit thing), and when she'd make those blankets, I'd curl up on the couch or somewhere nearby, drink some tea, and relax. That was when I was little, and without going into detail, something bad happened, and she and I don't talk to each other anymore.
    Your content is warm. It is deliberate, diligent, and fascinating. I can sit with a cup of coffee or tea, snuggle with my cat, and watch/listen to it in the background and it's genuinely wonderful. Even a couple times, I feel like I can relax like I did years ago. It's funny how someone else's hobby has a crazy way of making you feel like you're at home.
    Weird, I know. I still hope this made you smile, that your day is amazing, and whatever you're doing, I want you knowing that the world is better for it. Thank you for everything you do.

    I forgot to say this on your last video...I have a treadle from the early 1920s and the small flywheel (the ribbed silver one inside the one that the belt turns) can be unscrewed so that the needle doesn't move when you're winding the bobbin. Helps save some wear on the machine 🙂

    Thank you the beauty you make and share with us. Everything - images, lighting, editing, and music are so gorgeous! I have a question. I've never understood how the dragging on the ground skirts and dresses thing works. How do you keep your walking skirt hem with train wearable? It cannot be laundered with the Tarleton can it? I, too, love how it looks.

    • @bernadettebanner
      @bernadettebanner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      Washing tarlatan isn't advisable as the sizing will dissolve and it won't be stiff anymore. If you want a skirt which can be thrown in the wash, I'd recommend lining with a heavy linen or cotton, which will still give it stiffness (although will also make the skirt much heavier). You can protect the hem with that wool hem braid and add an additional facing layer on the inside to protect the tarlatan layer if the inside will be touching the ground as well as the hem; that way this can be ripped out and replaced when it becomes too worn or dirty. Otherwise, I just embrace the dust. It can be shaken out and brushed clean enough, but I do have to be careful not to wear my trained skirts in the rain (or else pick up the hem when walking), and to avoid sticky things on the ground. When I get home, I change into a house skirt so that I'm not wearing the dusty train around the house. Black wool hides a lot of sins. :)

      Bernadette, where do you buy your wool hem braid? Plymouth seems to be suffering a distinct dearth!
      A lovely skirt, thank you. I've yet to make my first. Due solely to the loft ladder shearing away just as I stepped off it. I was lucky, it could have been very nasty. So, I'm now working out how to get the replacement into the loft safely! Maybe if I put that big piece of hardboard on the bed and top it with the big cutting mat ..........!

    I mended a dress earlier this week and I just bought my first embroidery ring today after watching you create beautiful things by hand for so long! I'm excited to start trying (and probably making a few fails on the way) and thanks for making videos that drew me in long enough to start trying more hand sewing myself. (I'm currently loosing weight so I don't feel like there's much point making clothes until I know what size I'll be ending up- but I've already been eyeing up patterns and I *might* have splurged on some really beautiful fabric that's got me excited to start!)
    I find the way you present your videos so beautiful and relaxing :) (but I also love the more fast paced informative ones too- I think my most favourite Bernadette Banner video is whichever one I've watched most recently because I love them all 😂)

    • @BigHenFor
      @BigHenFor 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, part of the psychological process should be that you deserve nice things to be wear whatever your size. So, why not start making things in say, less luxurious fabrics so that you: 1) feed your imagination in using simple patterns and shapes that are easily modified later, like B's Pirate Blouse - a deliciously feminine blouse, that is forgiving on the wearer and the maker because it works well in lightweight polycottons as well as in more expensive lightweight cotton lawns and linen, but is easy to draft, make and remake if needed and 2) hone your skills over time. If you do that, you can reward yourself periodically with something new and unusual to wear. It's what our ancestors did: for example, having a child meant having to adapt existing clothing rather than buying new clothes for most people than the very wealthy. And you don't have to jump in straight away with the highly engineered and complex patterns. You could make a Dickie for instance, to jazz up a simple blouse under a jacket; a simple, but stylish walking Cape for the cooler months; a Victorian Pinafore, Apron, Tabard, Tunic or Housecoat to wear in the house. Or make accessories... In other words, start sewing ASAP, and just keep going. Don't wait until you are "perfect" to begin. You are already perfect in that you are you. You are a work in progress and you deserve to celebrate all your victories, all your milestones along your journey. All you really have is now. Enjoy it, and remember that if need, be you can visit other eras than the late 19th/early 20th century for fashion that is beautiful and feminine, but more forgiving of "imperfection". The era of Bridgerton combined exquisite fabrics with shapes that could hide a multitude of sins. The Empire Line dress, for example takes all attention from the waist and hips, and emphasises the Bust and Shoulders. And no stays. Lol. Think Audrey Hepburn in the Ball scene in My Fair Lady, wearing that drop dead gorgeous gown that called back to the Bridgerton era, but had Edwardian touches that made her look like an empress. Even without the budget of a Hollywood studio, you can have fun. That's pretty precious right now.
