The Shenmue prototype on the SEGA Saturn, is without any doubt the most impressive 32-BIT tech demo planet Earth has to offer! Yu Suzuki's AM2 devs were on another level of "skill"! Find my "SPECIALS" playlist here: th-cam.com/video/ZrVtr9RZcYs/w-d-xo.html
SS sound chip, the YMF292, aka SCSP? don't think so. Probably you are talking about SCU DSP, which can be used for sound effects and 3d matrix transformation math. Actually there was theoretical talks about console bios modification to make SH1 (which control Cd-rom) programmable and gain additional "horsepower". in the end, as XL2 stated once, most 3d calculation are done using the twin SH2, together with VDP1 and VDP2 for rendering.
Wow so they where actually planning on doing Shenmue 1 & 2 on Sega Saturn back in 1994 but decided to hold it off till they dropped the Sega Dreamcast...! It looks really Amazing on the Saturn port!
@@xtr.7662 How do you know what it suppose to look like? Is almost just as bad as saying "yeah amy shouldn't be in love with sonic." This is back when 3D gaming was a new thing. You know... Back when obnoxious trolls like you weren't even a thing.
@@DafyddBrooks I know right?! It looks so good that looks like a latest PlayStation game that was released between 1998-1999 :D If GTA 3 was on Saturn i'm pretty confident that it'll look just as good ^^ Also it'll depend on who was developing it :o
today it would be enough to have demos or unfinished builds (or new demos maybe) to appreciate the technical and artistic aspect and what was missing at that time, I think that these existing versions should be shared today for the fans, which are getting older (otherwise there would be almost no one to appreciate them...), like the new shoot-em-up Megadrive by Yuzo Koshiro, the leaked n64 version of Starfox Adventure and the unreleased starfox 2 which been included in the snes mini, etc.
This Demo and PZ Saga demonstrate that it is not about the power of the Sega Saturn, but the effort and the willingness to work hard of the developers. This game would have been one of the best games ever in Saturn. For some reason 8, 16 and 32 bit era have some magic that cannot be replicated in modern graphics. Modern games have no soul.
The thing is most developers at the time didn't have enough knowledge of the hardware as Sega themselves didn't supply the developers with the tools. That paired with release dates probably meant the vast majority could afford to make their own tools to realy take advantage of the hardware. Plus it was a period where many developers were only just getting used to making games in 3D. So it's more on Sega rather than most developers.
Im a Sega boy and Saturn lover plus PD saga is one of my fav games ever (with Shadow of the colossus and Dark souls, are my top 3), but the textures, geometry and animations, out of the cut scenes in engine, and battles, are very, very low quality. ANd everybody knows that. Burning rangers is the top notch in tech of the console, and a few others.
About to say the same thing. VF2and Sega Rally were the first most impressive 3D performance games on the machine, and after that it was Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Last Bronx. But Shenmue... The 3D performance is on an entirely different level and, not doubt, would have looked more impressive on a CRT.
This was absolutely insane by the time. i saw this tech demo for 1st time like 2006 - 07 here on YT and my chin went down to the floor immediately!! 3D advanced techniques like complete polygonal eyes with full movement and facial expressions, full motion capture with actors! also not only shenmue1 but shenmue2 is shown in this tech demo as well . I came to think this development was not being executed on a normal saturn but a ram upgraded one (6 or 8mb ram). Anyways great video! #HailSEGA
If im not wrong yu suzuki has confirmed that unfortunately this demo didnt run on a stock saturn, but on a 3d accelerated addon they were working on for the saturn... theres an interview where he confirms this.
interesting, I think the Saturn version was intended to be very close to the demo, because even if it is impressive there seems to be some framerate issues and there is no lighting (only fake lighting via textures) as is the case with other Saturn games which have a high polygon count. the Saturn version of Virtua Fighter 3 could have been just as impressive and included these facial animations and perhaps some good lighting like Fighters Megamix.
If this is true, the hardware expansion accessory they wanted to use had a PowerPC CPU and Intel i740 video card. Then, as we know, it was not marketed. However, seeing the demo of Shenmue for Saturn, it makes me believe that the hardware expansion was not used. First because the graphics it shows always seem to have the same graphic style as the stock Saturn ("wrinkled" graphics), which have therefore always been processed with vdp1 and vdp2. Second, if he actually used the expansion I mentioned, I would have expected even better graphics than it. But these are just my guesses.
I don't think it would save the Sega Saturn, but it's without a doubt the most impressive thing I've ever seen running on a fifth generation console, I'd even say it's more impressive than most Nintendo 64 games. (Maybe just Turok 3 has more impressive models and expressions, but Shenmue on the Sega Saturn comes pretty close)
The Saturn was basically on par with the N64, Even more so with extra 4MB ram. It not insane to think Sonic Advanture 1 & 2 could've worked at 512x240 with 950k quads with advanced effects/textures. Sega should've gave out dev tools that would've made coding on the system easy. It had 480MB/s bandwidth without the latency that the N64 suffered from.
This does look amazing but I doubt you could get anything playable at this level on Saturn. When you add in game logic, sound, collision ect I think it would just be too much. I would love to be proven wrong though
La gente olvida que esto es una demo y no un juego, y que el framerate es terrible. Como demo esta muy bien, pero me parecen demostraciones mucho mejores el Sonic R y las demos del unreal homebrew de saturn

Apparently the Saturn utilized its sound chip to help aid the 3D rendering of this game, literally pulling resources from every corner of the console.

yeah and 10fps in a real time fighting game wouldnt work well

makes you wonder what could have been huh!! SEGA were innovative back in the day, the pre GTA 3 :)

This footage is so old of the San Francisco 49ers were still world champs
I wish I could live in the universe where this was made for the SATURN :). thanks for sharing
Seems better on the Dreamcast. Why would you still want to play this on the Saturn?
@gr8gmr oh yeah better on dreamcast sure but it's interesting in how Sega were ambitious in creating a great game for the saturn

damn if this would have released on the saturn in idk 96'
playstation would be gone

Its 10 fps! What are you talking about?
This is mind blowing!!!
Quality of faces in unprecedented on a 32 bit hardware. I wish we could obtain the full reel or even a playable version
this would've looked better than anything the PS1 had to offer.
this and Virtua fighter 3 that was to be released on saturn
Yu san has the disks or archive service at Sega let s ask for education purpose
They should have released this on the Saturn; the console NEEDED this.
It probably look even better on CRT

Whats also crazy is that this basically shows gameplay from shenmue 1, 2, and even a little of the beginning of 3.

Yeah. The only place now is on the Dreamcast Shenmue 1 disk.

Even as a bonus game by buying the latest one
