A New Series - The Grand Houses of the UK
You probably know me from looking at the cheapest properties that you can buy in the UK at the moment, but in this new series I will be looking at some of the most lavish and expensive houses (or places that were built as houses) that are still standing. I think it will contrast nicely to the cheap house videos I make, showing the vast difference of buildings and wealth that exists on our tiny island.
I went to the Lake District to visit Wray Castle, a Castle which has never had to defend itself. It was built in the 1800's as a grand symbol of wealth, and made to look like the picturesque image of a traditional English castle.
The history of it is really interesting, it has had so many uses over the near 200 year it has been standing. A lot of the time it has actually just been left empty, which is often the cases for big houses as such.
It was a house, then a youth hostel, then a centre for science, next it became a training facility for the army and now it is open to the public.
To be honest, I found the inside rather dull. Not much is open to see, and it is very bare on the walls. But from the outside it is incredible to look at, and the location is very special. It sits by lake Windermere and surrounded by fields and mountains.
The creation of the national trust came from inspiration from this place.
Along side the castle there are some amazing trees, the best being two giant redwoods. I got my drone out as well and got some pretty great footage of the area.

I found your channel through an article in which it was featured (about the Horden situation) on the Mirror. I've been binging it since. Thanks for your thoughtful insight, friendly demeanour (to the locals) and professionalism throughout all your videos. You give insight from an understanding point of view rather than a judgemental one. It's a shame what's happened to towns becoming derelict as a direct result of industries closing and lack of investment from a government that sits on our money but refuses to reinvest it into us and our local communities (the whole point of a tax system). I feel bad for these forgotten and discarded communities. It would do them so much good if new industries opened up to help with jobs and bringing back people. Having stable employment opportunities would be a game changer for them. Not to also mention the amount of abandoned houses when homelessness has become an epidemic here. Having said all that, I also wanted to be cheeky and say that you're very a very handsome guy and not at all a turnip🤣

So interesting, thank you. I've only spent one day in the Lake District so don't know it at all and never heard of Wray Castle. The tiled surround of that fireplace might have been worth a closer look. A magnificent setting for sure and I'm glad the weather was so nice for you to explore the grounds. come to sheriff hutton in north yorkshire.. there is a castle! Apparently a princess burned in the castle, that was the rumour when we were kids. But there's no history to back that up. However,15-year-old Earl of Warwick, nephew of Richard III, was held prisoner by Henry VII.. & is buried in sheriff hutton church. Alot of interesting history here

The first room you went into reminded me of Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria BC, Canada. Built by a coal baron in the 1800's? We used to go up to the lake district when we lived in Blackpool. When we came back in 2006 we went to Munster Castle to see the Owls etc. I think we stayed in a bed and breakfast in Barrow in Furnace? In what used to be the oldest private school for boys? A fun fact surrounding the fake ruins is they were built by irish people who came over during the potato famin, Wealthy land owners wanted to help them but they didn't want to just hand them things for free so instead they got them to build things like the ruins or work on other areas of the land and then provided them with food and/or a small amount of money.
