I grew up in Burnley then went to university in Manchester. Stoodley Pike was a regular skive. If the weather was good, I'd jump on a train at Oxford Road and be in Hebden Bridge half an hour later. A belly full of (ahem) local mushrooms, and then a hike to the Pike. I loved that place. Often I'd walk over the tops and come down in Littleborough, sometimes in mist, often in hard frost. You're properly on top of the world up there. From that vantage point, I always used to marvel that humans mostly lived in the crevices of the land, like bacteria in the cracks of a mug, except with cars and houses and jobs. Mindblowing!
I am impressed with your enthusiasm! What an amazing structure! I wish we could go back in time and actually see this being designed and built. Thank you for sharing this with all of us. I love these kind of explorations.
Love the structure amazing, the view amazing, Did you Notice all the chemtrails in sky, research,,,, this structure was never rebuilt, they say this about many structures they say built in the 1800s, ❤😊
I noticed one or two your shots took in the sky literally covered even back in these days with chemtrails from these high flying jets, as the story goes spraying chemicals into the atmosphere to help blot out the sun's harmful rays, no wonder even in October you didn't get much sun.Apart from that great video very interesting.🤔
The beautiful skies with fluffy clouds, then chemtrail lines. To block the sun they say but why? We barely see it through the rain THEY created. Jeremy Clarkson did a video on cloud makers and how it makes rain. Explains the constant rain Soil is now rubbish therefore poisoning the soil making us dependent on government for food. Gmo crap
If you search “chemtrails” you get the conspiracy stuff, however, if you search “stratospheric aerosol injection” it unlocks the door to all things chemtrail! ;)
I work on the trains and have seen this thing hundreds of times as I pass through and always meant to go and check it out. Definitely going to after watching this!
I want to visit Stoodley Pike for the scenic walk and Todmorden for the strange happenings in the 80s.. Hopefully I'll be able to get up there and do a couple of videos.. Your content is inspiring me to get out more and enjoy these places. Nice one!
Yeah definitely come up and see the Pike, it’s a great walk. There is a great beach in the hills near it as well called Gaddings dam, worth checking out as well
Thanks for showing me what I missed. Some years ago I holidayed on the canal threw Todmorden I could see Stoodley Pike but didn't take the time to go up there, I so wish I did. Now I'm older I don't think my legs would get me up there.
There’s on route up that’s not too taxing if you are ever back 👍 can get the bus up to crag vale, and there is a pub just near, from there it’s pretty quick walk up
Great enthusiasm and equally great narration man... We recently visited Hebden Bridge to catch Michael Head and the Red elastic band play at the Trades Club, what a night... we actually stayed at Todmorden Cricket Club in the motor home, we went to The Golden Lion pub which is great if you're into music...l regret that we didn't hike up to Stoodley Pike, it was December last year and the weather wasn't great but hopefully we'll revisit in better climes...you're a lucky man to have all that beauty on your door step. Peace to you brother✌️ 🙏👍
Great video! The monument is amazing. Such a beautiful part of the world. I live in one of those flat areas of Canada. (Edmonton Ab) Although a short ride to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Will be watching for the next video. 🙂
I love turnip lad, David is so sincere in his work, he is not puppetised by commerce, he is anti corporation. He is compassionate about urban decay and everything that is bad for society. He cares about urban decay, He is all that a sick society needs, when it is winding down. Go lad, if I could I would buy you your house. thousand kisses.
I like to look at the names and dates people have carved into the stone over the years. It makes me sad, but I think about how they're no longer here anymore, and wonder who they were. It reminds me that we don't have much time.
Visited it in the late 80's with a friend. Just as we set off back down a thick mist came in. Visibility was about 3 yards and it was pretty obvious we were lost - in terms of direction. Fortunately after about 10 minutes it all cleared. Easy to understand how folk can get in serious trouble when up a mountain if the weather is against them.
The lightning rod was added because the bats were being electrified and turning into mutants. Around 1872 the town of Hebden Bridge was terrorised by a 300lb bat! Eventually, a mill owner named Sir Richard Head did battle with the creature and managed to drown the beast in the river Calder!
There’s talk of a roaming beast, some kind of cat or something up there in the forest. I once, as sober as a judge, saw some kind of gawky animal wandering just in the corner of my vision.
Thats a fantastic view at 7:02. Although i would say that, being from Cambridgeshire where it is largely flat and you don't have that ability to see where you live from up high (exceptions being Ely if you go up the Cathedral's towers or if you live near Gog Magog Hills in the south of the county).
Did this walk today in torrential and awful conditions, 8 mile walk in total but when I got up to the pike, it was blowing such a gale on top I didn’t even go round the side of the stairwell entrance, so I didn’t even know you could get up into it! Maybe next time ey.
Hello happy turnip. Keep on wandering- was it your caravan, it's a bit expensive. I would move in if it was cheaper. Let's negotiate a reasonable price, it looks good on the Moors, where the werewolves hang out.
@@wanderingturnip lol. Do you know Mike huett. 8 lived with him for a year at Uni, and it was a nightmare from start to finish. He used to dress up like a tree, and frightened people doing it. Good luck with the vids. Do one from hebden to Bradford, that's a good walk over the moors if you dont get eaten by werewolves.
he doesn't mention this but, the first pike was built of wood. A friend of mine went up there on his won in bad weather. As he started up the steps he was run over by a sheep which we though was very funny, he didn't.
Hey thanks. I use a DJI pocket osmo 2. Great bit of kit. The built in mic is really good apart from in the wind, which you can hear in this film at the top of the pike. But it’s also crazily windy up there
You should visit Darwen in Lancashire, it’s another old mill town like Tod & hebden but we have Darwen Tower, I went to stoodley pike last year but it has nothing on our tower in my opinion, but I’m a proud Darrener so very bias..
I have been up there when I was young and I carved my name in the floor and yes Keith IS STILL THERE i HAVE CHECKED A COUPLE OF TIMES yOU CAN SEE CASTLE HILL AT hUDDERSFIELD FROM sTUDLEY PIKE ..
RIGHT! I love your videos, but… NORFOLK ISN’T FLAT! Granted it’s not as lumpy as some bits of the country, but it’s definitely not flat! Come to Norfolk, I can show you knackered high streets, ruins aplenty, and hills!

Loved that, hilarious and at the same time so beautifully descriptive.

Hey thanks. Yeah I know it would so ace to see them getting al the stone up there. Hopefully lots more explorations to come 😃
@@wanderingturnip you’ll probably never run out of explorations!
Brilliant to see this monument up close. Thanks for taking us with you! 😀

I run up to Stoodley Pike several times a month…. Great up there in all weather conditions 😁

Shame about the chemtrails
Went up there many moons ago, loved it. Love to do it again, fine going up but not sure going down nowadays with my Postman's knee🤣 tip vid again 👍🙂
Some of the paths up are ok but some are steep. The front facing path is horrible steep. Cheers for watching 😀

Ahh when it’s windy up there it gets so bad. I’ve been up there like that many times. A day in summer is glorious
Great video, plenty of chemtrails when you got to the top.
Thanks my friend! The skies were busy that day for sure
david , when your next near oldham , check out hartshead pike , 1751 the original was built.
So like the Wèllington monument atop the Blackdown Hills in Somerset.

he doesn't mention this but, the first pike was built of wood. A friend of mine went up there on his won in bad weather. As he started up the steps he was run over by a sheep which we though was very funny, he didn't.
