Not sure. I think as a one off it looks interesting and I love your work. I think old style is good for the old models .But that's just me. That model looks awesome.
Since Guiliman lore wise is a relic from a different time when the Empire was fundamentally different, that would actually be like a really cool signifier of his age. His armor is like the old 1st and 2nd edition style while everything else is the more grimey and grimdark style.
I loved the bright and bold paint jobs of the 90's - it seemed every battle occurred in a luscious grassy meadow on a beautiful summers day. Wonderful contrast with the grim and gothic artwork found in the codexes and stuff.
Like a battle on a paradise world! Everything looks pretty and sunny, while Ultramarines eviscerate whatever aliens, mutants, heretics or daemons decided to invade. Or, this is what they look like for imperial propaganda and such.
I actually think this style looks better than the grimdark style on the new models. The grimdark style works best for the ultra-greeble'd 2000s models, but the new ones are so clean looking, might as well paint them this way.
When I first got interested in WFB and 40K it was around 2004/05, so all the models were still being painted like this, and the old Space Marine tactical squad boxes had the figures front and centre on the front of the box, looking like this. While the "Grimdark" style looks more sophisticated and cool in its own way, the old colourful style takes me straight back to being a ten-year-old entranced by these awesome, colourful space marines. I think the brighter colour scheme was more attractive to me as a child, while the Grimdark Codex, rulebook and White Dwarf artwork got me going later on. A real nostalgia fest, these videos.
Being someone who didn't start Warhammer until 8th edition. I actually love this retro look more than the colors they have now, I feel like it's the yellow instead of gold on the shoulders that's most interesting.
it might be neat if they introduced a successor chapter which has the classic colours. They have a very strong look but would be a bit out of place with the modern ultramarines
Frankly, being an old man, who started in 2nd ed I do believe that this is how an Ultramarine is supposed to look, the "modern" look is not the will of the emperor, the classic one is. Change is bad, because change comes from Tzeench! Only the 2nd ed style is the true 40k style... etc., etc., etc. Really good-looking mini.
I just started painting minis again after 27 years. I do enjoy the grim dark. But I’m gonna use this video to pull a classic look on my next mini. Thanks for bringing out my inner nostalgia
I started over 20 years ago in this hobby and I love seeing the old school paint schemes on the new models. Reminds me as a kid looking at the white dwarves and admiring the models. Great work!
@@Basil_Ghothickovitch I'm not sure if I am flattered or creeped out that you think I am so young but I assure you I have been around for over 2 decades in this great hobby.
it would be really cool to see someone bring a whole army of brand new models painted with the old colour set. it would stand out so strangely against most table setups lol
This just brought me so back to being a kid discovering Warhammer for the first time, the bright colour, the old names of the paints and then the basing technique just flooded with me with so many memories, couldn't help but smile. Thanks for the video.
This is great to see! I just finished a modern space wolf army in 2ed colors. It is so fun to get that nostalgic feel on some new stuff. I even went as far as to banner all my squad leaders and HQ's. Nothing screams "Grim Dark" like garishly painted armor on a golf course!
"Grim Dark" was only part of the tagline for the game. It wasn't meant to describe the ascetic. Look at all the old editions for the books, things happening in universe are certainly "dark" as in mature, some of those stories are seriously not for children, and "grim" as in the hopelessness of the state of things. But the ascetic of the game was always bright and colorful. It really created such a strange dichotomy, bright and colorful ascetically, yet such a grim and dark setting for the future.
Inspirationally nostalgic! Very cool concept to use on modern models. I do miss seeing the 2,000 point show case Ultramarine armies like in the old codex. Tactical squads and rhinos with the old color patterns/paints
It never really occurred to me how much painting styles have changed. I remember feelings of joy as a kid flipping the White Dwarf pages in my high school library, with the bright models standing on the plain fresh green flocked fields, among green, stepped foam board hills. A really unique feeling that’s impossible to describe, like imagination being sparked by an entirely new and weird world. Less realistic maybe, but it was a great vibe. And seeing everything so dark and grim now, you have to question whether somehow the sense of fun has gone and it’s all feeling a bit too serious. This video has inspired me to try and balance the old bright colour look with the newer grim dark style and find a happy medium. As an ex soldier too, I think I’d like to forget the darkness these days and enjoy the bright colours of life a bit more often. It’s just a hobby after all, it should bring joy.
Retro paint schemes on modern models is a very cool thing. Creates a very bold and in your face look. When done well like this it just looks the business. It's a surefire way to have one of the coolest armies on the table.
That's actually a bit good! I remember when Citadel paints first came out, they were quite a thing. Up until that point you either used Humbrol enamels or Acrylics out of a tube, and if you were a bit more avant garde, watercolours over a white base. Those old paints may not be up to much these days compared to the vast selection we have now, and the older models are a bit more basic- but at least they were cheap!
Enamels were an absolute pain. I painted my first Space Marines with them at the age of 11, and will never forget the mess I made - brushes destroyed, clothes ruined, figures caked in an impenetrable glossy shell.. good times.
I like these color schemes. A lot of the old models looked kind of goofy, but these really bright punchy colors made everything really easy to read on the table.
I would absolutely love to see a whole army in this scheme. I see a lot of videos of people doing single models, but I don't think I've ever seen a whole range of them.
I really love these more colorful paint schemes, especially the ones from back in the day. Really cool that you got your hands on some of the old original paints👍
As someone who started painting in the 90s originally there's definitely a flare of it still in my style today. I feel the bold and colourful approach of the time was to help accentuate the sculpting of the time, when things weren't quite so, lets say, anatomically proportionate and far more stylised. This was a fun video to watch through, though I'm glad we've moved away from that flock and goblin green basing of yesteryear 👀
Love the brightness of the colours; given that these paints aren’t available anymore I’d love to see a comparison with some modern paints with the closest colour match, maybe from Coat D’Arms. In any case, beautiful work and I hope to see more oldhammer (or oldhammer and new hammer mashups)!
For my Ultramarines I do Caledor Sky base and highlight up from there, XV-88 for browns and highlight up, Averland Sunset for golds/yellows and go up from there
Just getting back into the hobby with 10th edition, after a couple of decades, having grown up with 2nd & 3rd edition 40K and Fantasy Battle. Loving the channel, excellent content and love these trips down memory lane!
This was outstanding! I could hear the 90's soundtrack of my local GW store playing in my head again while watching this video. Oh man! Incredible! Great paintjob and I would love to see some more of the classic colour schemes of 2nd and 3rd edition painted on the new primaris marines to show the comparison of how far they have come!
I've actually wondered what a modern miniature would look like with a retro paintjob but I wasn't brave enough to try it myslef. Thanks for clearing that up for me. lol. It looks better than I expected to be honest.
I actually like that so much more. Maybe when 10th Drops I'll get in to Space Marines specifically in this style. It just pops so much, has so much pride and character compared to the more modern style.
Love this. Gonna try some of these techniques on a few armies I'm working on. Love how vibrant they look. Thanks for sharing and God bless you, and your little manz.
This is awesome! Proper nostalgia! I've been having a go at a BA HH army long the same lines, using yellow instead of gold. I've toned it down a little but for me, it (sort of) makes up for my old 90's BA army I chucked out in a house move.
Coming from Painting minis in the early 90's, this was an awesome nostalgia moment for me. I think a true Ultramarines army should be painted like this. you have done such an amazing job. Really brought back the greats from the 90's for me. Surprised you didn't utilize the flesh wash as much , as I found it works really well on almost any colour.
As a total noob to wargaming and miniature painting, it's great to see the variety of styles, colours amd techniques that go together to paint a model. And to see that you can paint however you want to!!
Wow. I actually much prefer the 90's style to your newer style and it's made me want to paint a primaris marine in the style of the 90's blood angels scheme. I think it would look awesome. Great job btw 👍
I hadn't realized until just now how many bright, primary colors are on an ultramarine! Practically a rainbow. I think that is one of the indescribable appeals of classic ultramarines!
I remember when they started with the darker colours, and the gold trim and thinking, That's not right at all, don't like that! 😁 Nice hit of nostalgia there! Good stuff.
Not a wargamer, but I am interested and I like to paint minis. Seeing this old school stuff, the vivid colors, the sillier aspects of retro wargaming... It's really interesting! Damn ... Didn't think it would look that good. I was pretty sure it was gonna be good, but I did not think the paintjob would go so well with the mini. Well done Ollie.
I absolutly love this! I gonna make an Mordian Iron Guard army in this style but color them either old school dark angels green with a lot of red details!
The painting style determined by the paints of the 90s taught patience, care and a little bit of experimentation. I was still using a pot of goblin green and mithril silver until recently. Made to last. For gold I would play around with red and silver with a bit of snake bite leather. Didn't always work but it was fun. Interesting comparison of then and now techniques.
Does have a certain aesthetically pleasing charm to it. I'd love to see more videos of modern mini's painted in the retro War Hammer style, would be a great idea for a series of videos!
There's a subset of the fandom who are convinced that something cannot be Grimdark unless its tripped over and landed in a pond, and not a clean pond either. And whilst that is true (to an extent), grime and darker hues can give a model a feeling of belonging in a similarly bleak setting, I can't help but feel that having "fresh" looking troops is much more inline with the universe to a certain degree. Many races (not least of all Space Marines) are known to take exceptional care of their equipment, with entire branches of their force dedicated to maintenance and repair of their gear. Similarly, other forces are so used to taking casulaties that at any given time, it's highly likely that any force they take into battle is going to consist at least partly of fresh troops with new equipment. I'm a huge fan of this conceptually simple, very clean style from the 90's. I respect the modern techniques a lot but to me this is peak wargames miniatures painting.
Back when I had a very limited selection of paints (i.e, this set), I used to create my own gold by mixing Mithril Silver and Flesh Wash, and it was pretty darned effective...
I really like the bright and colorfull old painting shemes and styles for Warhammer 40 K. The whole universe is grimdark, but it feels like some comicbook and cartoon universe and armies popping in bright colors on the tabletop fit this cartoon feel very much.
What do you think about painting newer models in the older style? I honestly think I love it. Bright Light style all the way!
Paint old model like the modern day
I like it, will probably try this art style when I get my 10th edition starter box
I really like it. Fiat lux - Let there be light!
Not sure. I think as a one off it looks interesting and I love your work. I think old style is good for the old models .But that's just me. That model looks awesome.
The details in the new models take so well to the old bright color schemes.
I'd love to see Guilliman painted like this. It'd be so odd and yet somehow so fitting
Since Guiliman lore wise is a relic from a different time when the Empire was fundamentally different, that would actually be like a really cool signifier of his age. His armor is like the old 1st and 2nd edition style while everything else is the more grimey and grimdark style.
The colours of a brighter more care free era, shell suits and bright colours were the thing "back in my day" ;)
I loved the bright and bold paint jobs of the 90's - it seemed every battle occurred in a luscious grassy meadow on a beautiful summers day. Wonderful contrast with the grim and gothic artwork found in the codexes and stuff.

That yellow is so gorgeous, especially with the neat edge highlighting!
Thanks! I love it. 😀
I would go with 'Glorious Light' as the term for models painted in this style. Great work with the retro painting.
I like the term!
I’ve heard the counter style to “grim-dark” is called “Noble-bright”

Good to know that oldschool painting is considered harder than today’s styles. Makes me feel better about my mid-90s pitiful efforts.

Love it so much. Gimme that over realistic grim dark any day
I 100% approve of this!! Thank you for doing this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I remember my old Chaos Space Marines from this era. It's still kind of crazy seeing a primaris next to a first born like this.
I can't believe those 30 year old paint pots weren't full of dry rocks...
I love it , transports me back to being 16 and learning 40k , using books for hills and blenders for other terrain

Ever since Midwinter Minis did old units in modern grimdark, I've wanted to see new units in old fashioned paint styles! Thank you!
Wow. I actually much prefer the 90's style to your newer style and it's made me want to paint a primaris marine in the style of the 90's blood angels scheme. I think it would look awesome. Great job btw 👍

Wouldnt mind a vid on that modern ultramarine , love that shade of blue
I never got onto the grimdark band-wagon; bright and vibrant colours all the way!
imagining this squeaky clean guy walking on the battlefield next to streaking-grime crudded, dinged up Brother Grimdarkicus is a pretty funny thought.
I would gladly do a whole ultramarine army like this
This is so beautiful
Looks beautiful! Love the Enchanted blue of old.
Thank you! Cheers!
Prefer the ‘old style’ for war gaming - great job!!!
B-E-A-utiful! I love the aesthetics and crispness of the paint job!
Quality content, as always👍🏻👍🏻
Legitimately looks way better than the modern style. And I wasn't even around when this was a thing so that's not nostalgia.

Can you do one look like painted like the old colours, but with modern paints and techniques?
would be a really interesting comparison
