    Great underwater video footage Davy! When I used to snorkel and scuba dive in Panama I carried an 18-24" wooden rod of hard wood (made from a shovel handle or similar material) that I would use to hold off against the rocks during wave surges and currents. I also used it as a deterrent for waving off sharks, barracudas, or moray eels got a little too close. A bit easier to wield than a spear shaft. Great day with Davy and Erica. Nom nom nom - awesome looking nachos! Great video! Thanks & Cheers!

    Great video! Lovely videos of the sharks, I've dived with reef sharks before and it was a lovely experience, they're amazing and beautiful creatures - like so many things underwater clearly completely alien to our way of life. I'm deeply respectful of sharks and their role in our ecosystem but have to admit that when it comes to some species (Bull Sharks being one of them) I'm very aware that I potentially look like dinner.

    Just a note. After living and diving in the Bahamas for almost 10 years. The sharks in the video were Caribbean Reef sharks. You do not want to swim with Bull sharks.. too unpredictable!

    • @BarefootTravels
      @BarefootTravels 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Skip Baker correct the ones we filmed where Caribbean reef but the one that was stealing our fish earlier in the day was a young male bull ... they are both very similar in there skittish behaviour and neither of them are to be afraid of in clear water

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @Barefoot Sail & Dive
      I have a contrary opinion regarding Bull Sharks in clear water. While I certainly agree that they should not be feared, it's my opinion that they should be deeply, DEEPLY respected even in crystal clear water.
      Not 2 months ago, in clear water off the Eastern coast of Great Harbour Cay, I was the "victim" of a shark attack by an 8ft Bull Shark. I use quotes, because I was only rammed by the shark, which badly bruised my ribs and made if difficult for me to breath for several days thereafter. I was spearfishing and had just taken a large Yellowtail Snapper to the surface in about 25' of water.
      The Bull Shark "bump" felt like being tackled by a linebacker. It was a very odd sensation to feel such an immense and abrupt pressure underwater where kinetic forces are typically much lessened. The really odd part about it was that I was only in 3ft of water when the Bull Shark made it's move. When I felt the bump, I dropped my spear/fish, flipped over on by back, and started back-peddling like crazy. My feet could touch bottom, at this point and I was desperately trying to make some distance between myself and the wildly thrashing shark which, at this point, had the fish & spear in it's mouth. I vividly remember the red shaft of my pole spear whipping around violently through the air and the water as the shark rapidly shook back and forth. Then, as quickly as the event began, the shark, my spear, and the Yellow Tail Snapper were all gone back into the deep, clear water.
      Even though I was highly diligent in scanning the surrounding area while I was spearing, I never saw the shark before the attack. A few minutes after the event, I swam back out into the deeper water to see if the shark may have dropped my polespear nearby. To my surprise, not only did I find the shark swimming along the bottom, but it also still had my 10ft polespear still lodged in it's mouth. That's the point when I could clearly identify the shark as a large Bull, and also have a convenient sense of scale as to how large it was in comparison to the 10' long polespear that the shark had in tow.
      I made no attempt to reclaim my polespear from the 8ft Bull Shark. He seemed a touch agitated at this point and I, reluctantly, deemed it best to allow him to keep the polespear as a reminder of our brief time that we enjoyed together. I do say that in jest, of course... my true feeling is that I hope that shark was able to shake my polespear so that it could go on doing sharky things, unencumbered by the inconvenience of towing around a 10' polespear.
      Even though there's no way to know the truth of why this event transpired, I still wonder if the Bull Shark was interested in me and I just happened to drop a tasty fish when it rammed me, OR if the shark was aware that I had a fish out of the water and it rammed me to make me give up the fish.
      The 2 mistakes I made were -
      1) Not having a spearing buddy close by.
      2) Not having the dinghy close by.
      I will not repeat either of those mistakes again.
      This is one of those times where the phrase, "The Luck Of A Fool", has poignant meaning.
      As scary as this shark attack event was, I still love and respect sharks. They are wonderful, amazing and beautiful creatures, BUT they operate on highly keen instincts that, unfortunately, allow these types of scary events to happen at times. It's not their fault, it's just the way they're wired, and it's our job to operate in a manner that respects that behavior & instinct.
      I do have a single special request, if I may ask it...
      Keep a lookout for my red 10' polespear off of Petit Cay in the Berry's, but be aware that there my be a 8ft Bull Shark attached to it.
      -Ben

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Ben, sounds scary.
      Have you seen this: th-cam.com/video/JgSH9nnAA7A/w-d-xo.html
      Your story, and other experiences of ours and others, let us to modify our Hawaiian sling to prevent close encounters like this. We added a line about a foot back from the tip and attached it to our handle-like a spear gun. That way, while you swim to the surface, the tasty fish is dangling well below you. Sharks have highly evolved and very sensitive sensing mechanisms and putting some distance between you and the fish keeps them far enough away that they won't ram you to get to your dying fish.

    How did a Dutch Albert Hein (AH) bag end up on Uma!! 🤪😂😂 Watching from my couch (I bought one 😩) I suddenly see that bag from an iconic supermarket chain here in the Netherlands go through the shot. Good one though it is meant to be reused, the Dutch text “Gebruik mij opnieuw. Meer doen voor het klimaat. Gewoon bij Albert Hein” means “Please reuse me. Do more for the climate. The norm for AH” LOL 😂!!! Keep on sailing guys, don’t buy that couch as you are looking great and living the dream hehe! 👍👍

    BTW, what was that the shark gobbled off the bottom at about the 10:10 point? I was thinking Lion or lobster.

I wish I had the nerve to sell and buy a boat and live like you guys. I don't know how long you plan on doing this. But so far it looks like a lot of fun. Do it for as long as you want! I am surprised that those sharks hung around that much. Not much for them to eat. Possibly they have been condition so that when they see humans they think they can get a free meal by moving in on any spear fishing kills.

      They only showed up when fishing, but after we gave up on fishing, we dumped the rest of our chum in the water for them to snack on. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been that close or interested.

    are you not allowed to eat the sharks?

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some countries still do, but it's like eating a Dolphin or Whale, why bother. They're vital part of the oceans ecosystem and keep the reefs healthy by eating all the dead and dying or sick and injured fish. We much prefer to be a shark that eat one.

      Haha. They actually can tell the difference between the dead or dying fish in your hand or on you spear and the very alive hand holding it. The first time diving there, the first shark surprised me by pulling the fish right off the spear by my hand. I just felt a tug, turned, at the shark and fish were gone. That far from the ocean, surrounded by such shallow water, we were NOT expecting any sharks in there. After that, we kept a better watch while diving. But in clear water, they're very selective. If your not dead or dying, they pretty much leave you alone.
