    As a 26,000 hour airline captain, and with about 20,000 of that flying "heavies" up to and including the 747-400, love your work and professionalism. Great video, very nicely put together, great work!
    The only other thing I can add of course is that back when I was flying GA, I'd love to have had all those modern aids. I was flying single pilot IFR in Barons, Chieftains, and a Cheyenne III with no such gear, all just navaid to navaid, and paper charts, and sometimes out bush in outback Australia, purely visual navigation (ie: no navaids available), and I loved every second of it!! Those were the days :-), the best flying I ever did.
    Keep up your good work!

    Hi there Steve, I'm an AME and GP in Holland. I follow your video vlogs for some time now. I agree with the other comments and applaud your efforts for being the best possible advocate for aviation. Yes, your message even reaches as far as Holland. In fact, your videos and the way you bring a professional swag for piloting, it inspired me to follow up on a life long childhood dream: becoming a pilot. Ofcourse, for me it wouldn't be commercial, but hey, it's also for the fun and to experience a bit of what pilots go through, which again, helps me bound with my work as an aeromedical examiner, in Alkmaar, Holland. Keep up the tremendous good work, and keep posting those incredibly fun and educational videos.
    Sincerely, Marcel van Philips, MD

    Hey Steve, in my opinion, if every GA pilot out there watched your video and saw how you were willing to change your destination without hesitation, there would be measurably less tragic incidences caused by fuel and/or weather issues in the future.

    That moment when watching a random flying video and the aircraft is departing the runway, you spot the 3 DC-3s that are the fleet of Missionary Flights International that you have ridden from their base to Haiti and back 6 years ago :) Lovely to see those old stately gooneys still providing help and hope all over the Caribbean. Great video and thoroughly enjoyable.

    You're a pro. Very smooth and focused. I lived in East Hampton for many years going back to the 1970s. It has changed a lot since then. Although always a farming and fishing community, artists, movers and shakers, and then Hollywood moved in. Since then all hell broke loose driving prices and house size ever and ever higher. That golf course you looked down on was the famous Maidstone Club whose members include many recognizable family names, including the Bouviers, Jackie Kennedy's parents. I used to fly in and out of East Hampton and recognized your approach off the ocean.

    Great airplane and video. Nicely done while being completely safe. Aviate, navigate, communicate. You did all of that. As far as deviating around weather, we have asked for 10 left and right for the next 100 miles and normally approved. In other words, deviate as necessary (10 left or right) without unnecessary communication and then let them know when you are direct to your fix. And as always, cut the corner when you can.

    I have never seen a single video of Steve's in which any concentration was lost. In fact, him talking through the procedures probably helps his concentration even more. Maybe the FAA think other pilots might not be able to handle it with such virtuosity. In other words this is about setting examples rather than Steve's skills. Some people are very good at multitasking and Steve is clearly one of them. FAA should use INTELLIGENCE on a case by case basis, but I doubt intelligence is their greatest strength.

    I think you should consider tuning the radar on for takeoff. Once you're airborne it's a little late to find out it isn't going to work today. Just a suggestion.

    • @marcs990
      @marcs990 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      pumpkindog1 my only comment on that was the range of his Radar can’t give you the long distance weather and also on the iPad the weather app would give you weather for whatever area you wished BUT that’s only showing the 5-10 min ago picture. You can’t really tell how a flight is going to work out as when he got in the air he ad to make deviations and you never know what altitude you will be given or the the condition of the various wind layers at those altitudes. At the start he was good to go, and still was reasonably safe to carry on to his original destination, but he didn’t want to take the risk as the probability of complex traffic at his destination could of put him in a stack waiting to land, wasting more time and gas which I believe was his main decision to reroute

    Steve...something that I have done to one of my GO-Pro cases is to cut a hole in it over the power port on the camera. By doing this, you can put your charger chord into the camera power port thru the side of the case and then plug the other end into a 12 volt lighter plug. Your camera is inside so it doesnt matter about not being water proof. I have been doing this for about a year on my motorcycle and it works perfect...my batteries never die. Put your camera in the case and close it. Take a sharpie and draw a square on the case slightly larger than the power port. Then take a small drill bit with a variable speed drill and drill on the lines you just drew on the case. Once you get the cut out made, you can use a small hand file to smooth it out and your are set...no more dead batteries. PM me if you need help.

    Steve1kinevo- It takes a lot of imagination to guess at what the FAA has against your channel. (Is this going to be another notorious instance like the FAA vendetta against Bob Hoover?) There is a pilot shortage in the US, pilot certification is prohibitively expensive, the average rental fleet is about 40 years old with obsolete avionics...there are too many obstacles to a career in aviation. Here you are succeeding in your career, making highly entertaining videos, doing your best to motivate young people into this industry and all the FAA can do is try to shut you down? Please let all of us know how we can help you with this ridiculousness.

      There's a pilot shortage because of SJS (shiny jet syndrome). Everyone wants to be a pilot, so Airlines don't have to train their own pilots because a lot of people want the career bad enough to finance the cost themselves. There's a reason why regional pilots get paid crap. Because there will always be someone willing to fly a CRJ and sleep in break rooms for 20k a year. If there were a true pilot shortage, Jetblue's pay to play gateway program would never be successful. What other job do you know where people willingly get into 125k debt for a 30k job? It takes less money to get an MD behind your name.

    • @GonzoT38
      @GonzoT38 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      it's also interesting to note, steveo was at one time one of those broom-closet sleeping during turns, regional FO. Of course, these days you'll get the retort that today a regional can start you north of 60K, but they don't mention it's all sign up bonuses, which mean your second year take home is actually lower LOL. Or the fact the second the industry takes another dump with mainline hiring and the movement stops, the regional bonuses disappear like a fart in the wind and now you're humping it for the same 30K as 10 years ago (inflation adjusted).

    Correction. Although JFK did fly up the coast of Long Island, he went down about 10 miles to the South of Martha's Vineyard.
    I flew there the same night as he did. It was a hazy night. This is only my opinion but the Saratoga he was flying has the fuel selector up under the middle of the cockpit, and I think when he was doing the landing checklist when he selected the tank with the most fuel, rather than keep his body and head straight, he leaned over to reach the switch and developed vertigo and because he was over the water, had no ground reference. If I remember right, he had very little time in that plane.
    Great video BTW!

    G'day from down under steveo !.This is going to be a long comment everyone. Enjoy all your vids both from a presentation style and from watching a professional pilot @ work. I also watch from time to time Sonia / ex dirty bird's vids and clearly she is learning from you and your vids how to develop and present a professional youtube channel worth watching.To me this is a clear endorsement of your passion, dedication and professionalism not only to your youtube life, but also to your piloting career . As someone who has always loved flying and most things related to flying I find your vids entertaining, informative and as with your sean d tucker vid great fun!Also as someone who trained to be a commercial pilot at younger age than yourself I can clearly see why many viewers, myself included believe that in presenting your vids the way you do! you are a positive and inspiring influence both in a general and professional aviation sense. I would be happy to pay to sit in any passenger seat on any aircraft that you fly. I'm sorry to hear that the FAA has an issue with you and your vids. I hope it is NOT serious and I also hope that there are enough good & smart people ( balance skill standard with mental attitude, professionalism and positive influence/ role model) that a positive outcome happens. I would hate to see your flying and vids stopped. You have my support. I have ONE request though! where possible and without compromising your position further could you please keep us in the youtube viewers community informed ( I personally do not face book ) as I think this could have potentially serious implications for all in the youtube aviation community.Best wishes and kind regards.Rob H.

    I've been thru the comments so far(albeit pretty quickly)and didn't see this mentioned.... I wonder if the FAA is coming after him because of the sterile cockpit rule? If so PR1 Driver and others could be in trouble also. Not that I think that this is a problem for these pilots. They handle themselves very professionally IMO.

    • @RADThird1
      @RADThird1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gasfiltered thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't sure about Part 91 rules. I always wondered about the "scenic" shots in Seveo's vids....thought it almost had to be drone taken. You're speculation makes sense to me.

    • @Robert-gx6jk

      man that would be ironic, if it's the profit from drone use that is what got him in trouble, and not the flying bit, which is the focus of his channel in the first place. Like Capone getting nabbed for tax evasion and not the killings. LOL

    • @RADThird1
      @RADThird1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Robert Clark. After checking the part91 rules, PR1 Driver is in the clear on the steril cockpit thing. I think that gasfiltered may be on to something.

      gasfiltered This may be in left field, but aren't all Patreon subscribers donating money to help with his videos. Donations are not like a contract or a salaried endeavor. They might be able to make him stop, but taking down the channel will be one hell of a legal battle for the FAA to win. He is a commercial pilot and can get paid for his work, but he is not under contract to produce videos. My best guess is he is showing to many people how to fly a high performance & complex aircraft, and the FAA, Homeland Security, and TSA don't like it; also that he shows that the security is not all there all the time for GA operations. Yes, I noticed no drone segments or Boosted Board videos for awhile, but anyone can put up videos of stuff without true advertising contracts. Look at some other You Tube channels (not pilots) and see what the FAA has done to them, if anything, for their drone videos. Does Steveo have control over the ads in front of his videos? Does You Tube use popular video producers to make their site profitable through these advertisements, and how much do they pay the video producers? Is it Boze and Foreflight as contest sponsors that the FAA doesn't like? They just might lose this on the free enterprise and free speech laws we have; as a pilot and Advanced Ground and Instrument Ground Instructor, I see no instruction, only this is what I do. They might have to shut down all the flight simulator software producers as well. It will be interesting to see what they come up with and the millions they will have to spend to get all pilots to fall in line. I don't see how they can get at flight instructors though, as this is a professional license and their are plenty my of them on You Tube; most pilots say they are not instructing, only showing the possibilities of GA or ATP pilot careers. 😎

Or is it that they just want their cut of his video proceeds ? Or, do they see Steveo wearing Bose headsets, while they still have Telex ears, from the seventies ? That's discussing !

    whatever the case may be with the FAA, maybe they should really concentrate on items such as, professional airline pilots attempting to land on "Taxi-ways". Or the new norm, " pilots of the magenta line" and the possible degradation to basic stick and rudder skills. The FAA needs to be AMBASSADORS of good will for all types of aviation.

    Hi Steveo,I love your videos! I am a pilot also, (Pvt/Sngle Eng.) but I have nowhere near the hours or experience that you have. I have read a number of the posts by others on this site and I don't believe you are doing anything unsafe. All pilots are unique and have different skill sets and different levels of abilities with respect to multi-tasking. Certain pilots are more comfortable handling multiple tasks and others prefer to singularly focus just on the main tasks at hand. You clearly, can handle multiple tasks with ease and your experience level shows up in your videos. I couldn't do what you do and for me to try to would be considered unsafe. But, for someone like yourself who can manage those things simultaneously, it is not unsafe. I learn a great deal from your videos and it allows me to take the flight with you vicariously. Keep them coming as long as you can. The flying community benefits greatly from them! Dan

    The FAA is correct on this and Steve is clearly violating the sterile cockpit rule which is not a good look.
    However there is no question that Steve's videos are an asset and that he is a very competent and professional pilot.
    There is a simple fix available here.
    Edit and overlay - i.e. Comply with the sterile cockpit rules - take the vids back to the production room and add all the comments that Steve thinks are appropriate to illustrate the where and why and either do a voice over and/or add the comments to on-screen.
    I am assuming here that the sterile cockpit rule is the major reason for the FAA complaint.
    If however the FAA are "doing a Hoover" on Steve they are digging themselves a big hole - again!
    btw I am not a Microsoft pilot. I am retired (Tiger moth to 747) and watch most if not all of Steve's videos. Great job Steve.

      Sterile Cockpit Rules
      FAR 121.542 / FAR 135.100--Flight Crew Member Duties
      (a) No certificate holder shall require, nor may any flight crew member perform any duties during a critical phase of flight except those duties required for the safe operation of the aircraft. Duties such as company required calls made for non-safety related purposes as ordering galley supplies and confirming passenger connections, announcements made to passengers promoting the air carrier or pointing out sights of interest and filling out company payroll and related records are not required for the safe operation of the aircraft.
      (b) No flight crew member may engage in, nor may any pilot in command permit, any activity during a critical phase of flight which could distract any flight crew member from the performance of his or her duties or which could interfere in any way with the proper conduct of those duties. Activities such as eating meals, engaging in non-essential conversations within the cockpit and non-essential communications between the cabin and cockpit crews, and reading publications not related to the proper conduct of the flight are not required for the safe operation of the aircraft.
      (c) For the purposes of this section, critical phase of flight involves all ground operations involving taxi, takeoff and landing, and all other flight operations conducted below 10,000 feet, except cruise flight.
      Note: Taxi is defined as "movement of an airplane under its own power on the surface of an airport."

      @@ahstrewth I recently completed my SEL ride check so I'm no expert. That said, I spent two years training under three instructors, all of whom talked their way through demonstrating everything they taught, as they performed each task, and all of whom who taught me to do the exact same thing. What exactly is he doing that violates Sterile cockpit? Sterile cockpit procedures prohibit diverting attention away from critical tasks during taxi and critical phases of flight. I don't see anywhere in FAR 121.542 or 135.100 that prohibits verbalizing those critical tasks as you focus on and complete them, which is what Steve is doing. If FAA is going to ban verbalizing your airmanship and decision making while you fly, we are going to have to ground every training exercise in the United States until FAA can come up with a way to communicate about flight tasks across the cockpit during critical phases....without speaking. And I'm going to have to come up with some other way to fly, because even 8 months after my check ride, when I'm flying I verbalize my decisions and procedures, out loud, constantly!
