Hey, I KNOW how difficult these Bach pieces can be. i understand, to a point. Lifelong guitarist here, and I've spent years transcribing Paganini and Bach pieces, these things are addicting too once you've got your hooks in and think you can get them up to speed. There's truly nothing like Bach. I love playing from these sonatas and partitas and I'm getting hooked on a couple preludes and minuets from the cello suites. I'm listening here because I'm playing this on mandolin and I'm hitting snags in two places trying to keep the tempo genuine. The fingering on mandolin is tough but Hahn has given me a better feel and I'm getting past the measures that were tying me up. I had to playback at a slightly slower speed to catch here transitions of those tongue-twister measures. I'd tell my students and anyone that wants to play these... BACH... is a four-letter word! She's playing with her wedding ring on. I don't think I've seen other violin masters do that. She's a very consistent performer with flair and cordiality. She always provides an uplifting experience to cheer us when we're feeling low.

I played the violin as a kid, gave up when I was 19 (after grade 8 in the UK). Took it up again two years ago, I'm now 58. I'm working on this piece at the moment, and it's a challenge, to say the least. When I started on it, I genuinely feared it would be impossible for me, but I can just about play it now, albeit not as fast as she plays it here. Knowing the piece, watching this performance is just mind-blowing. I know I'll never be able to play it as well as this, but watching her play is a real inspiration and an absolute joy. I've listened to a lot of violinists play Bach on TH-cam now, and HH is by far my favourite. Her technique is just beautiful to watch, as well, so clean and without affectation.
@@vladmirpuddin385 generally speaking starting something on an upbow feels "backwards" so to speak and is difficult to coordinate because over the duration of the piece the feeling of being on a backwards bow is uncomfortable making it harder to play but hilary does it so easily and sounds better than most people despite the akward bow direction
@@vladmirpuddin385 Up bow means you start at the tip of the bow and play towards the frog (part you hold). Typically up bows are a little lighter and down bows are accented. You can hear how Hillary plays the second note with a slight accent which is the result of the down bow being moved over. Most pieces start with a down bow as its more comfortable

Despite the bite on the string being slightly more difficult when starting on an up bow, this particular piece is facilitated by it because it makes the rest of the exposition easier to play because of the string crossings. I would know because I played it.

Hilary is the reason why I haven’t quit violin after 9 years of playing. I look at her when I feel sad, and she gives me determination! In March I will have played for 10 years! I’m so excited. Thank you so so much mrs. Hahn for giving me inspiration all these years! I’m 13 now, and I love you!

She's the only violinist who reminds me of David Oistrakh - she shares his power, grace, serenity, good humor, strength and humility (as in 'how was I chosen to have this gift?'). Among so many phenomenal musicians, HH stands out as one of the truly great.
I've been playing with a cleaning sponge on my rest for about two years now, and now I see that Hilary, one of the best violin players at the moment also does it, I'll use that next time when people tease me about it 😂
I was enchanted when I first heard her play Bach when she was still young & now...she does not dissapoint as she has grown into a beautiful & talented violinist of the highest order! God bless her as she continues to amaze us! Her Bach sends shivers up my spine & I long to hear more every time I listen to her play!
I can’t. She just...HOW?! She is perfect! It’s one thing to listen to the music but it’s another to watch her actually play it. Her posture is absolutely flawless. A professional violinist’s bow hand should move gracefully meaning that when you change bow direction you should start the transition movement with your fingers. At such a high speed, Hilary Hahn does this incredibly well. Not to mention her bow hold just looks so relaxed. Her bow maintained perfect contact with the strings throughout the entire piece. It didn’t slip at all which gave it a really nice and clean sound. You could tell she was letting the weight of her left arm sit in her elbow which meant that she was not clenching the neck of the violin which made the shifts not even noticeable. The shifting was so clean and she never missed a single note. The speed of her shifting was so good as well. If it’s too fast, you are likely to miss the note. If it’s too slow, you can very clearly hear the shift and if that’s not what the composer intended then it sounds bad. And her left thumb stayed in the same exact spot unless shifting which is incredibly hard with such awkward fingering in this piece. I didn’t hear a single note where intonation was questionable. Despite how much her left fingers were moving, she kept her hand shape perfect. Also when she placed her fingers on the strings, she didn’t use the very tips of her fingers, nor the fleshy part like when you play a harmonic. She used just the right part of her finger so that the notes were exactly in tune every single time. With all of this she still manages to have a nice facial expression so it doesn’t look like she’s about to cry or stuff up like most violinist do when playing a hard piece. I am so blown away by Hilary Hahn and I absolutely love her work. She is easily my favourite violinist and I look up to her and respect her so much.

I see I last commented on this a year ago. I can play this now, a lot better than then. I've discovered so many nuances in the piece. I thought I had it then, but I didn't. Now I'm closer, but also wiser, and I understand just a little deeper the master that was Bach, and consequently how much further I have to go. I've listened to Hilary playing this at least 100 times, maybe more, and it's a wonder every time. I fall in love with her a little bit more every time I hear her play it. I saw her play this and a lot more Bach besides at the Wigmore Hall in London earlier this year, and it was a transformative experience. For violinists of any level, she is an absolute inspiration. Her playing cleanses the soul. Of all the current crop of soloists, she is the pinnacle.
I'm a retired machinist with industrially damaged hearing. Anyone who can play a Bach violin sonata without it sounding tedious to me has gotta be a real musician. Now I am a Hilary fan. Thank you, young lady.
It was just non-stop! I completely lost track of time just watching this absolute insanity. How can you play so consistently for so long without even so much as a rest or pause?
I saw her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra when she was . . . what, thirteen maybe? She walked on stage like she owned the building and then amazed me with the finest Mendelssohn concerto I'd ever heard. My feeling afterwards was that I was blessed to belong to a species that could produce a miracle like her. Then I heard some woman behind me huff that she paid to see STARS, not CHILDREN. "You ignorant cow, you HAVE heard a star and you're too stupid to know it!" . . . is exactly what I didn't say. Plus, Hilary is the NICEST person!!
I keep watching, or listening without watching, every few days. A lot to listen to, a lot to watch and appreciate. Concentration, relaxation, movement and a little "There, see how it's done?"

When ever I play the violin or show a recording of a violin being played my dog starts to howl and bark. Especially on the double stops or higher notes.
In Bach's time only a few privileged people would have had the chance to hear this incredible music. I often wonder what he would have said.if someone had told him one day anyone in the world could do so at the touch of a button. I'm sure he would have been thrilled to hear this flawless rendition by one of his greatest admirers.

Absolutely remarkable. Every time I hear something she does, it's just outstanding. Her bowing is amazing, especially for this music, Bach. Just the right amount of attack and aggression with the subtleties all in the right place. Excellent dynamic expression. Her intonation too is always beautiful. Mind boggling! She shows up handling that splendid Vuillaume of hers like a frying pan, then she starts playing it like the Goddess that she really is. Magnificent is just another empty word, unable to describe her unearthly art and outstanding violin skills.
She makes it sound easy to play. She makes it sound like there are two violins playing at once. Hilary is elegant. She makes every note heard to the perfection, effortlessly. You can feel the music and savor the sweet melodies the way it was meant to be. She is an eye candy as well. Classical music goddess.

Another single note piece of Bach that is very difficult, you have to have the bass and describe all the harmony. Bach does this with humor, lots of phrases upside down and backwards. I hadn't played my viola for a while and to get back in it I picked this piece. It has everything, difficult bowing crosses, intricate phrases with different groups of notes alternating in number, tricky syncopations. I assumed it would an easy warm up just looking at the page, but it soon became something to practice in every measure, I had to slow down so much I play it adagio for now to get every note right. I am inspired by Hilary, I didn't realize she is a fantastic Bach player at least on the level of Perlman. Funny thing is I like to watch them both, the way the body and the bow move is so much a part of Bach playing. I can tell what you are thinking almost since I know the notes myself. You videos make me want to go practice, I guess that is a good thing.
The pure Angel of Unser Vater JS Bach spirit. She carries it in her mind and sends it to her blessed hands through her fingers to the strings of her Stradivarius. She is unique which doesn't mean that there are not many other excellent violinits. Once in a while I see/hear something that mesmerises me. I just can't stop watching this. I usually listen to solo piano in the classical sphere, but this has opened up brand new horizons. Phenomenal.
The thing about hilary's playing that makes her very distinct is that she actually allows each note to take their own time which makes a sense of both separation and connection for each of the notes and those before and after it.

Hilary is the reason why I haven’t quit violin after 9 years of playing. I look at her when I feel sad, and she gives me determination! In March I will have played for 10 years! I’m so excited. Thank you so so much mrs. Hahn for giving me inspiration all these years! I’m 13 now, and I love you!

She's the only violinist who reminds me of David Oistrakh - she shares his power, grace, serenity, good humor, strength and humility (as in 'how was I chosen to have this gift?'). Among so many phenomenal musicians, HH stands out as one of the truly great.

I've been playing with a cleaning sponge on my rest for about two years now, and now I see that Hilary, one of the best violin players at the moment also does it, I'll use that next time when people tease me about it 😂
Anyone who has played this can tell you the greatest piece of magic she accomplishes is making it seem so EASY.
I was enchanted when I first heard her play Bach when she was still young & now...she does not dissapoint as she has grown into a beautiful & talented violinist of the highest order! God bless her as she continues to amaze us! Her Bach sends shivers up my spine & I long to hear more every time I listen to her play!
I can’t. She just...HOW?! She is perfect! It’s one thing to listen to the music but it’s another to watch her actually play it. Her posture is absolutely flawless. A professional violinist’s bow hand should move gracefully meaning that when you change bow direction you should start the transition movement with your fingers. At such a high speed, Hilary Hahn does this incredibly well. Not to mention her bow hold just looks so relaxed. Her bow maintained perfect contact with the strings throughout the entire piece. It didn’t slip at all which gave it a really nice and clean sound. You could tell she was letting the weight of her left arm sit in her elbow which meant that she was not clenching the neck of the violin which made the shifts not even noticeable. The shifting was so clean and she never missed a single note. The speed of her shifting was so good as well. If it’s too fast, you are likely to miss the note. If it’s too slow, you can very clearly hear the shift and if that’s not what the composer intended then it sounds bad. And her left thumb stayed in the same exact spot unless shifting which is incredibly hard with such awkward fingering in this piece. I didn’t hear a single note where intonation was questionable. Despite how much her left fingers were moving, she kept her hand shape perfect. Also when she placed her fingers on the strings, she didn’t use the very tips of her fingers, nor the fleshy part like when you play a harmonic. She used just the right part of her finger so that the notes were exactly in tune every single time. With all of this she still manages to have a nice facial expression so it doesn’t look like she’s about to cry or stuff up like most violinist do when playing a hard piece. I am so blown away by Hilary Hahn and I absolutely love her work. She is easily my favourite violinist and I look up to her and respect her so much.
Don't forget that at the end she still being a human. Glory to Jehova the true God who give her such a talent.!!!

Her face shows more like she's proud of how amazing the piece she's playing is rather than How she does it. An absolutely amazing person and I'm also proud of her
I see I last commented on this a year ago. I can play this now, a lot better than then. I've discovered so many nuances in the piece. I thought I had it then, but I didn't. Now I'm closer, but also wiser, and I understand just a little deeper the master that was Bach, and consequently how much further I have to go.
I've listened to Hilary playing this at least 100 times, maybe more, and it's a wonder every time. I fall in love with her a little bit more every time I hear her play it. I saw her play this and a lot more Bach besides at the Wigmore Hall in London earlier this year, and it was a transformative experience. For violinists of any level, she is an absolute inspiration. Her playing cleanses the soul. Of all the current crop of soloists, she is the pinnacle.
One simple word... it's a GIFT.

I saw her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra when she was . . . what, thirteen maybe? She walked on stage like she owned the building and then amazed me with the finest Mendelssohn concerto I'd ever heard. My feeling afterwards was that I was blessed to belong to a species that could produce a miracle like her. Then I heard some woman behind me huff that she paid to see STARS, not CHILDREN. "You ignorant cow, you HAVE heard a star and you're too stupid to know it!" . . . is exactly what I didn't say.
Plus, Hilary is the NICEST person!!

When ever I play the violin or show a recording of a violin being played my dog starts to howl and bark. Especially on the double stops or higher notes.
In Bach's time only a few privileged people would have had the chance to hear this incredible music. I often wonder what he would have said.if someone had told him one day anyone in the world could do so at the touch of a button. I'm sure he would have been thrilled to hear this flawless rendition by one of his greatest admirers.

Absolutely remarkable. Every time I hear something she does, it's just outstanding. Her bowing is amazing, especially for this music, Bach. Just the right amount of attack and aggression with the subtleties all in the right place. Excellent dynamic expression. Her intonation too is always beautiful.

it starts to sound polyphonic at around 2:21 with those low notes so seamlessly mixed in with higher notes.
Another single note piece of Bach that is very difficult, you have to have the bass and describe all the harmony. Bach does this with humor, lots of phrases upside down and backwards. I hadn't played my viola for a while and to get back in it I picked this piece. It has everything, difficult bowing crosses, intricate phrases with different groups of notes alternating in number, tricky syncopations. I assumed it would an easy warm up just looking at the page, but it soon became something to practice in every measure, I had to slow down so much I play it adagio for now to get every note right. I am inspired by Hilary, I didn't realize she is a fantastic Bach player at least on the level of Perlman. Funny thing is I like to watch them both, the way the body and the bow move is so much a part of Bach playing. I can tell what you are thinking almost since I know the notes myself. You videos make me want to go practice, I guess that is a good thing.
The pure Angel of Unser Vater JS Bach spirit. She carries it in her mind and sends it to her blessed hands through her fingers to the strings of her Stradivarius. She is unique which doesn't mean that there are not many other excellent violinits. I love her Beethoven, her Brahms, her Chaikovsky, her Bruch, her Mendelsohn... and her Sibelius is super splendorous. Thank you Hillary!!!

The thing about hilary's playing that makes her very distinct is that she actually allows each note to take their own time which makes a sense of both separation and connection for each of the notes and those before and after it.
