I found it completely unnecessary. He, it, whatever you want to call the plane. could have accelerated away instead of turning to face the helicopter, then come back around less then a minute later and strafed it.
Considering the evidence, what you suggested, as soon as the UCAV would have accelerated away, the gunship would have turned back towards both Ben and Kara and killed them before they got to safety/hard cover. Also, if "EDI" would have predicted that upon returning to base. he would have been shut down anyway, so he/it predicted this was the best outcome.
I still find it kind of weird that edi saw no possibity but self sacrifice. With the degree of aerial control he had show earlier in the movie he should have had an easy time dodging around the heli's line of fire and clipping it's main rotor with only light damage to the plane.
BushWookie A scramjet does not make as much noise as a turbine, and ... the helicopter crew would not have heard it take off above the noise of the propeller, so if he had not fired the machine guns, the helicopter crew would just heard that he taken off when he made the helicopter about 5 or 7 holes 2: could have moved a little back, enough to lock-on the helicopter with a missile (and shoot it, obviously) 3:he could accelerate towards the helicopter but instead of crashing against it,he could dodge it (and he would get bebind it),and face it with a sharp turn (just like the one of the scene that he landed on the carrier) ,which would have given him enough time to shoot the rotor, the helicopter would have lost control and would have crashed
If I was designing a smart AI like EDI, I would have built in an ejection system of the core, exoatmospheric if possible to help recover such a valuable asset, with a secondary processor hardwired into the combat platform able to handle simple commands like a kamikaze run into a target like that helo, while the main “brain” punches out to safety. “My mandate is to survive.”

EDI deserved it, he did the right thing to save Ben and Kara, but he's still highly responsible for killing those poor people on horses in Tajikistan and putting all the Talon squadron at serious risk. Still cool UCAV though, fast, furious, quick and slick in combat.

Did the movie seriously just glance over the fact that there’s no way the North Korean government wouldn’t see this as a declaration of war? North Korean soldiers killed by enemy forces on their own land, there’s no other way this could be seen. Plus earlier they destroyed a bunch of Russian planes within Russian airspace, which would also be seen as a declaration of war. Congratulations, they just started WWIII with two countries that have nuclear weapons.
The North Koreans should have brought the Mi-24 HIND Attack Gunship instead of the Mi-8/17 Armed Utility Helicopter. The 12.7mm Nose cannon, the UV-32-57 rocket pods as well as the Strela Air to Air Missile fitted on the Hind would have blown up the UCAV EDI to shreds. I have seen first hand what a Hind can do to Tanks and light vehicles. The UCAV would have no chance in this.

Since the Helicopter was faster than the Jeep and truck QRF it reached fast but not fast enough to save the Search party sent to capture or kill the Female Pilot. In real time scenario The Search party would comprise of KPA Special forces equipped with NVG's and Modern Russian and Chinese Handheld Weapons including at leat one Shoulder launched SAM unit. The KPA would then Dispatch 4 MiG-21's, 4 MiG-23's, 2 Su-25's, and Atleast 2 Mi-24 Helicopter along with Ground Based QRF. And All of this because its an American Pilot who can be used for a bargaining tool and displayed as a presentable Tortured Doll to the Supreme leader smiling on North Korean national TV begging America to apologize and let Korea unite under North's Regime.
Well once there was shooting on the border the guards there probably called the gunship before EDI blew them up, the migs were probably not sent anywhere becuase the border guards didn't anticipate enemy aircraft and didn't live to witness the landing.
